Locking Tailgate

I've been driving an Avalanche for years, I assumed a locking tailgate meant a tailgate that is locked when the lock button on the remote control is pushed. Which made me wonder why there was a place for the key on the tailgate. Glad I found out now, rather than coming back to a truck that has been emptied because the tailgate was unlocked that I have to lock it with a key if I am wanting things protected inside.

For the money these things cost, shouldn't they be able to use the same system as the Avalanche does, or should I say did, since they got rid of that too?

Pop lock makes an electric tailgate lock.

Yep, I put one in my Ram.

Looks like more work than it is worth for the few times I have something of value in there. I'll just use the key. Should be standard equipment so you don't have to fish wires around through the firewall and patch into the fuse box.

There is honestly no need for a auto lock on a truck that DOESN'T come with a cover for the bed. Thus the manual lock works perfectly for people that do put one on. I have no need to pay for a option that has been standardized into the build of the truck to auto lock the bed tailgate when I have no intention of putting a cover on it. Worthless feature without a cover. Which a cover is a after purchase add-on, just like auto locks for tailgate are.

Just my two cents on the scenario :-)

Using that logic, there is no need for a lock either, and you are paying for that too. With no cover, there is no need to lock a tailgate.

Although, I do see your point. :)

Not sure but I think the Av has the locking tailgate because it started life as a Sub. Which has the lift gate wiring back there. Just my guess.

I also think that locking your tailgate, even without a covered bed, helps prevent tailgate theft. Such theft can be a problem around here.

On trucks there is a need for a locking tailgate with a cover or not. At least to me there is. People steal tailgates and tail lights. I have expensive Recon smoked LED tails and the way to take them out is to drop the tailgate

this is one place gm is lagging, my dad just got a 2013 ram and his tailgate locks with the fob when he locks the doors.

I don't find it lagging, but on the contrary, it is pointless to have the tailgate lock with the cabin doors. I need access to the bed with or without the cabin under lock and key.

Do you guys know if they are interchangeable? Today I saw a truck just like mine with what looked to be a lockable oem tailgate.

There wasn't an OEM option during our vintage

I just got a new tailgate for my 03 and its got an interesting lock setup. Instead of a pop lock like my other 2 it has a piece of aluminum that completes the cutout side and bolts in place. More of a pain if you remove your gate a lot but seeing I don't its clean and simple.

Really simple concept and uses one of the tailgate pivot bolts to attach it.
