Does new 5.3 burn oil?

I bought my 2010 Silverado Z71 brand new. I have 57,026 miles on it now. Last summer I noticed the excessive oil burning, took it to the dealer and they replaced the valve cover. Oil burning has improved, but a couple months later the check engine light came on. I took it back to the dealer and they replaced #1 spark plug to correct the misfire. Now several months later, the check engine light came back on again. Code was misfire on cylinder 6. I am sure it is another oil fouled plug. I can really notice it at idle. I only use Mobil 1 synthetic, Shell or Sunoco gas and I drive it easy. I am dreading even going back to the dealer leaving it for a day, finding another ride to work and back and wondering if they will cover it under warranty and just put another band aid fix on it. I paid 40k for the truck and am now totally sick that I have to deal with this.

2600 miles dip stick still at full mark, I have always broke new engines in by avoiding high rpms for first 1000 miles.

I sure hope it doesn't burn oil! I need to grow another 12" - 18" taller to reach the dipstick to check.

I checked the oil on mine the other day while getting gas. Truck had about 2000 miles on it at the time. Dipstick showed full of oil. No burning here.

 

Oh and I do plan on following the DIC to tell me when to change the oil. Should be approximately 7000-7500 miles.

I haven't used any oil yet, but I only have 12K miles.

I have 2014 gmc 5.3 with 33000 kms on it out driving today oil low on the information center come on I shut it off 20 min later back on drove home didn't think the oil would be low 60 % left on oil change pull the dip no oil on stick off to gm in the morning

I'm already pretty apprehensive about buying my new truck after selling my 2008 Tundra. I bought the Tundra brand new in 2008, and put 134,000 trouble free miles on it with no oil consumption. It makes me a bit nervous to read things like "1 quart every 1000 miles" being "normal". Really? I'll be beyond pissed if I have that issue! Wish me luck....

There was a chart attached to a similar article that I was unable to find. GM Trucks were not on that list, Jeep wasnt even on it. I just traded my 2009 Jeep on my Silverado and that thing burned about 1 - 1.5 litres between oil changes which was usually about 5-6000 km so a lot apparently this was a known thing with that engine. The engine ran fine never an issue but still I dont like that all these manufacturers are ok with this type of oil consumption.

I had to add oil to mine this morning. I've been towing a lot lately so I checked my dipstick this morning just being curious. Sure enough, it was below the low mark. I checked it right after it was serviced and it was full so I know it's using some now. Truck has 17k. Been towing several large boats

No oil consumption with mine so far. Nearly 12k miles on the odometer. I have about 2 oz oil in the catch can for every 1000 miles of driving. I don't allow the truck to run in AFM mode. Ever.

42,600 miles on my Sierra and I haven't noticed any oil consumption. Changed oil 2 weeks ago and the level was pretty much at the same spot on the dipstick from the last oil change. I have been using Mobil 1 0W-20 and going by the oil life monitor. This usually puts me at about 7300 miles between changes.

I just cannot endure oil burning engines. Too old fashioned I reckon, when none of my vehicles ever used oil. My '93 Dakota 3.9 V6 with over 200,000 miles still does not use any oil! None. I loved those 350 GM engines! My '96 got almost 20 mpg highway. Other than the notorious intake manifold gasket mess with those years, they were rock solid. I wish GM would just make those again. I imagine my '96 350 hooked up to a modern transmission would get over 20 mpg highway.

Well I am now a little nervous.... I have a 2015 silverado 5.3 with 9900 kms. no issues so far.....but...

 

My buddy has a 2014 Sierra 5.3 with 55000 kms on it. He started it up this morning and was engulfed in a cloud of blue smoke. Turned the truck off and checked the oil, was way below the low line. He has consistently checked the dipstick for oil use issues, and nothing up until now.

 

Recent oil change was 2000 kms ago....wonder if this may relate. If so how?

 

He has warranty changes for oil and uses it within 10-15% of oil life left, which is ususally every 9-11000 kms. Which is what GM recommends.

 

Any thought or ideas why the 2014 5.3 has burned up so much oil?

 

EDIT: I would also like to stress that my buddy takes really good care of his vehicle and neglects it in no way possible. No mods, nothing done to the truck at all. We have no idea what is wrong.

I just got my 1st oil change on my Silverado 15', and it was down about 1/2 quart after 7,000 miles. I can live with that!!
