I have 34000km on mine and I pit 7 liters of oil in 10000km. I'm now doing an oil consumption test. I also get 13-15mpg on the highway. I had also had a bad vibration dampened on my truck from brand new to 22000km until the dealer found the vibration . All this I think I need a new engine

Varying rpms for the first 100 miles. If rings ain't broke in by then, they won't. Afm closes the valves and leaves the combustion gases in the cylinders to act like a spring. Burned oil comes from 2 places. Valve seals and rings. Valve seals usually show on start up and rings are while running plus with rings you will get blow by and bottom end pressure builds up

I have not read the entire thread, but I will throw my experience into the mix: the AFM (Active Fuel Management) increases "blow by" on the rings which is then re-routed back into the engine via the PCV. The condensation from the fuel vapors and oil blow by mixture is then returned to be "burned" again. Each time the engine activates the AFM and four cylinders go cold, you will get more oil loss especially if you get on the throttle coming out of afm. There are a couple solutions:

1. Purchase an aFm delete plug and play which does not write/program or otherwise do anything to your ECM from here: http://www.rangetechnology.com( I will be selling mine shortly for $100 once my Diablo Sport Trinity comes in)

2. Purchase a programmer that can deactivate it such as the Diablo Sport, Edge or Bully Dog

3. Have a professional tune

4. Drive around in MANUAL mode

5. Install a catch can to keep that crude from going back into your engine (does not stop oil loss but highly recommend - I get about 2/3 cup every 800 miles when I have AFM on! Plus, you can monitor the actual amount you lose -will try to attach photo of the crude I have collected after only 200 miles of NORMAL driving with AFM active) http://www.eliteengineeringusa.com/elite-engineering-catch-can/

You can read more on Catch Cans here: http://oilcatchcan.com

Hope this helps! Happy Trucking

I towed 16 feet of trailer @ 6-7k lbs. for 1,500 miles in tow/haul mode down the east coast and did lose about a quarter of a quart on the trip. Every two to three hours I pulled the dip stick to check and there was nice puff of grey coming out of the hole so I am assuming due to the high heat/abnormal stress on the motor, I was burning oil but with the trip and load it was too be expected. Of my 30k miles so far, that was the ONLY time I've consumed oil. On a side note, my transmission temp was also a solid 10-15 degrees above normal during the trip as well so I might do an early tranny oil change.

So if you use the RangeTechnology product or just always drive in Manual, and never let it go to V4, do you still need a "catch can"?

mike5511 - the jury is still out on this. I am still collecting "data" on this. My data will be skewed as I just got my DiabloSport Tuner Trinity and am playing around with it. I will say, with the range tech, I drove about 200 miles and still had some"coffee" in the can. Not as much, but some. I am not sure if there is still some residue left, but once i have more data, I will report back. On a similar note, I am selling my afm delete (only 200 miles on it) for $100 plus shipping of your choice. If interested, please contact me.

I already have the Rangetech plug-in thing. My truck runs good and I'm not interested in any tuning right now. The DiabloSport tuner does look interesting though.

I live in a mountainous area (NW AR) My gas mileage seems to be better when I run in manual-5 as opposed to drive with the rangetech plugged in. Not much, but certainly not worse! I've determined 6th gear is for the flatlands. I don't know what it will do with V4/AFM engaged because that will only happen by accident with this truck. I'm averaging 19-20 mpg and that's about 70% hwy miles on real gas or no worse than a 50:50 mix of 10% E-gas.

Here you have it folks.........I have 34,000 miles on my 2014 GMC Sierra 1500 5.3L V8 and yes, there is this mysterious oil consumption problem.

It started around 26,000 miles but was intermittent between oil changes so difficult to nail down. Since I wasn't sure the oil wasn't topped off during the oil change I couldn't be sure it was a problem with the engine. Around 32,000 miles and about 2,000 miles into my next oil change cycle, I smelled the engine burning and the engine oil light came on. I pulled over and checked the stick and there was very little oil in the engine. I took the truck to the dealer and they had it for a few days and came back and said they could't find anything wrong with it. They recommended a consumption test and asked me to come in every 500 miles. This started in November. At 600 miles after the last oil change I took the truck in and the oil level was 100%. They recommended I come in at another 1000 miles. At 956 miles into this interval the burning engine smell came through the vents so I pulled over and checked the oil. Again, a drop of oil in the engine. The dealer wants me to bring the truck in next week but of course I'm pushing to get this to them before then. Thanks to this forum I don't need to sit there listening to nonsense. I get the idea that the AFM is driving this problem and dependent on how often the vehicle is in 4 Cyl mode governs how quickly the oil is burnt but why does it start happening around the 30,000 mile mark?

my 2014 chev is the opposite. it used about a quart and a half on 4500 miles for the first 3 oil changes. i am at 40k and now it is not using any oil. i am at 37 percent on the oil monitor with 6k on oil and it is still on the ful mark. i didnt check the level after gm changed oil, so i dont know if they over filled it

Drained a little under 8 quarts on my last oil change, like 7.6. I attribute the 0.4 to oil caught int he catch can, and oil in the filter, and oil i spilled on the floor.

Safe to say my 5.3 is not burning oil

Had AFM turned off for quite a while too.

10k on mine and no oil consumption. It is bad to have an oil eating engine but it happens in all makes and models and always has, AFM can just up the chances.

How did you turn it off?
