2014 Problems Really Bad?

Hey guys,

 

Long time lurker here...looking to buy a 2014 Sierra Denali in the next 4 weeks, but after reading numerous threads on this forum - there are a TON of people reporting problems with their trucks.

 

My opinion is that if you're paying $50,000+ for a pick up, you shouldn't have these problems, and my question is that do you think the Denali's will run into the same issues or do they have higher quality production standards for the Denali models?

Seems like for every person having an issue who posts about about it on a forum, there are 20 having no issues who don't post (because they have no issues).

I wonder if GM would tell what % of vehicles had been brought back for a problem so far. Who knows. But there are issues, just like there are happy owners. The overall consensus seems to be that the 2014's are nicer and more powerful than previous models. Have you driven a 2014? That's where I'd start if I wanted to buy one.

A) the internet is a great place to bitch and whine, but is not really an ACCURATE gauge of the big picture.

 

B) all the trucks run down the same line, right? The Denali is a trim package. I doubt it gets any more special "attention" than the truck before or after it on the line.

 

My advice would be to find a dealership that you like to deal with. As long as you have good dealer support, you shouldn't have any issues if/when you have problems with your car/truck.

 

It's no surprise that a brand new model will have some teething pains, but sometimes they never resolve all the issues (no matter how many model years later) and mostly, it's just luck of the draw. ~99% are probably fine.

I for one have a few things, Like leaky shocks (not GMs fault) that are an annoyance, but nothing earth shattering. I am mostly pleased!

I have yet to take mine in for its first oil change, but it will be soon. When it goes, the only things I will be asking the dealership to look at will be the radio for poor reception, and the drivers seat for non operation of seat heater. I had a 2007 GMT 900 that I traded in for my new truck, and every day i'm happy that I did so. This new truck is stellar!

My radio has the poor reception problem also. By far the worst FM reception radio I ever had. I took it back to dealer, they checked radio, antenna, then checked other trucks on lot and they were the same. That is the only issue I have.. Truck is great, hopefully GM comes up with fix for radio.

I have driven many different vehicles over the years. As vehicles get more complicated there is more to go wrong. I am overall pleased with my 2014 Sierra. I think the overall quality of vehicles has improved over the years. A lot of the problems come from integrating different technology into vehicles. I remember when having an 8 track player in your car was high tech.

Poor reception here as well. I was crazy enough to think its because they are pushing you to use your XM (which sadly is working on me because my regular favorite stations don't come in anymore).

Hope thats not the case. Maybe GM will come up with a fix.

I'm starting to wonder that as well. I mean seriously, how long has FM been around and it's not like an antenna is anything new...

Personally I am getting out of a BMW 550x because it has been to the dealer for issues more than any other vehicle that I have ever owned. 80K for at least 5 trips per year to the dealer. Replaced power steering pump twice, still grinds. Replaced rims 11 times and tires 14 times... (low profile runflats are not made for New England, but at least I had wheel and tire insurance). The radio randomly shuts off at times, other times the radio defaults back to FM 87 with static when the car starts. The brakes squeak with light pressure and the coolant leaks and drips on the exhaust.

 

So... yes I expect more from a more expensive vehicle... not perfection, but this was ridiculous. I can only hope that my new Denali has fewer problems.

      New to diesel trucks. I happened to find my oil cooler leaking oil externally with only 4,000 miles on the truck. I didn’t realize this was an issue until I started researching it. Dealer is going to replace it under warranty but I’m wondering if there’s anything GM is working on to fix this issue. I’ve heard the oil filter used is the same as they use on their V6 motors and that’s what is causing the problems. Should I switch to a bigger filter or keep using the OEM recommended?

      Seems to be Missing a lot of Updates

      So, GMCustomerService:  Judging by the Update History pictured above, is this truck missing any updates that it actually needs. If it's just for the infotainment system, the radio is working fine and no trouble with SeriusXM. and Android Auto is working fine wirelessly with my phone. Some months ago, an update notice was sent to my truck. I approved the update and it finished saying that the update was successful, but it seems that whatever that update was, it didn't actually get installed - at least not if I'm to go by the Update History shown above.   So, again, are there any updates that this truck really should have? I've checked with my dealer but they're reluctant or commit to anything and if I want them to check, they require a $200.00 fee just to check it out and then I'd have to pay for the actual update(s).    Ignorance is bliss, and if none of the updates goes to fixing any mechanical discrepancies, I'll just leave things as is.

      Hey everyone, I recently had an issue with my 07 2500HD GMT900. My DRL’s stay on at all times. Right front turn and right mirror turn signal indicator stay on solid at all times. By “at all times” I mean the only way to make them go off is disconnecting the battery. I tore the headlight assemblies out, tried disconnecting the harnesses to eliminate bad wiring at the harness, I unplugged the headlight switch, no change and the mirror turn signal still stayed on. My first thoughts were : Bad bulb and/or socket somewhere, under hood fuse panel bad, bcm bad, tail light or trailer wiring problem, or some random short to power in the harness.  Possibly a bad ground but unlikely. I had a big clue in the fuse panel, it had a burnt smell. I started pulling every fuse that had to do with DRL or right turn/park lamp. Nothing made the right directional turn off but pulling the DRL2 fuse made the DRL’s go out.  After studying wiring diagrams, I found that both problems had that fuse panel in common, the bcm also controls both problems but knowing the fuse panel had a burnt smell I removed and disassembled the fuse panel and found a little corrosion on the printed circuit board.  I ordered a new fuse panel from Amazon for like $260. When it arrived I installed it, and put everything back together, the problem was fixed. I figured the fuse panel needed to be replaced anyway so that was a logical place to start. Hopefully this story helps someone in the future. Regretfully I didn’t scan for codes before I did everything.

      That stinks. I’m sitting on the side of the road right now with the same issue. Never had an issue before taking it in for the ground strap recall. Now I’m outside of warranty and they’ll probably want $200 just to diagnose what they already “fixed”.
