I will be doing some towing (4 wheeler/ SxS) sometimes, but 95% I will not be towing anything. Am I ok going with the 3.08? What is the difference in gas mileage between the two?

Thanks

not much... when in doubt .. get the 3.42. I can tell you this.... much more people regret getting the 3.08 when compared to the 3.42 ....do a search..

like above said, search.. i have a 3.08 GMT900 which is used as a DD no towing.. not as peppy as a 3.42 truck but still a good gear combo for someone looking for fuel econ and dosent tow, i turn low rpm on the highway and get 20+mpg

I hated the 3.08 so much I traded it back in after owning it for less than 3 months and got a 3.42 equipped All terrain model...and it cost me $5,000 out of pocket to do it (granted the AT I got stickered for $2500 more to begin w/ but still), take that for what its worth.

I will say I come from driving muscle cars so off-the-line pickup is important to me.

HOLY CRAP that must be slow as hell!! I didn't know they put 3.08's in the weak 315 hp motors!!! I had 2007 4 speed 5.3 silverado w/ a 3.73 rear end previously and that was no speedster but a 3.08 in that truck must be god awful.

I got the 3.08 because I only tow a Bad Boy Buggy twice a year to and from hunting property. Job requires a lot of Hwy miles and I was looking for the best gas mileage. Don't have a heavy foot so for me it works fine. Last four had the 3.42 and I don't notice a big difference. Just my 2 cents.

I went to my local dealer to get a thorough look an test drive a truck. The one I took out was an LTZ with the 3.08 and I found it felt a little gutless along with the transmission was all over the place.

I test drove a truck with 3.08's .........had my wife and son with me, so wasn't driving like "myself" .............and honestly, didn't notice the truck feeling "lazy". I actually still chirped the tires (totally by accident) making a right turn into traffic (so I wanted to get moving) and was actually a little surprised how good the get-up-and-go was, considering they were 3.08's.

That being said, I ordered a truck with 3.42's. It just makes sense.

350+hp with 6 speed trans, realistically 3.08 is fine. 10 year ago old 275hp 4speeds towed fine now every one wants to win races towing. Guess this is the new normal, all I see is worse drivers pulling heavier trailers wanting sports car performance. I just find it funny. But I also had to have the 6.2 6 speed in my last truck. Just went with the 5.3 this go around.

I want the acceleration for the highway on ramp & merging into traffic. I'm not racing anyone with a 98mph speed limiter lol

There is a huge difference in first gear ratios between the 4L60E and the 6L80E. I didn't really like the off the line with the 3.08's, so I bought a truck with 3.42's.

Damn straight! Why not have the best of both worlds? What's wrong with that?

3:73 or 4:10 it's a truck.
