Is Anyone Keeping OnStar When Trial Subscription Ends?

I'll probably keep it - mostly to use the 'minutes' for hands free calling. I don't own a smart phone and my old flip phone with a pre-paid plan does not do Bluetooth. So I 'stored' all the people I might need to contact, plus gave my Onstar 'truck phone number' to those that may need it. And, I do get calls from others who are calling me at home via Bluetooth and the clairity of Onstar if far better than trying to listen to Bluetooth callers garbled voice. I will stay with the least epensive plan "Safe and sound" I think it's called. Plus I only make maybe 2 calls per month - and they are short calls.

I renewed for one year at less than $13/mo for Safe and Sound. Once that expires, I'll see what kind of a deal I can get then.

How did you get that price from them?

Sorry, I looked at the wrong thing. It came up to $14/mo on their site. $169 for the year. When your trial is almost up, check to see what kind of special you can get to renew. I likely would not have, had it not been this reasonable.

I find it how half of the people keeping it is for the theft recovery. Kind of the opposite view that I have if it's stolen, because if someone takes my truck, I hope they burn it because I don't want the damn thing back. if it is Stolen vehicles aren't really known for being driving in a cautious and friendly manner.

Exactly...you catch it, you clean it. Insurance will rectify the thief's idea of a good time. No worries.

I won't be keeping mine. Even if it we're $5 a month I'd probably pass on it.

I am going to renue "just in case". If my wife drives the truck and gets into a crash or God forbid it gets stolen, OnStar can find it for me.

I'm a LEO, and have seen OnStar come in handy on crashes and stolen vehicles.

agreed. here in my dept they will tell the dispatcher "they are on IH45 north passing scott in the number 3 lane". pretty impressive if you ask me... im keeping on my fiancé's car and my truck not so much for the crash as for if either of our cars are ever stolen. we live in the suburbs and the crime is not very high but we do occasionally go into the city so it's just a little piece of mind.

fyi lojack works but it's a lot harder to track the vehicle because the signal can bounce of building and such, onstar out performs it by a long shot.

I locked my keys in the truck one day, out of cell range, (cell was in truck anyway). I was 200mi from my spare key at home, sure, i could have had a hide a key, but i don't. My buddy was parked next to me and we pushed the onstar button from his truck. He does not have Onstar activated. I was able to have them unlock my truck and save me a 400mile round trip or the cost of having a locksmith come and attempt to open it. In my opinion Onstar is worth every penny for a dope like me that locks his keys in the truck!

Never had Onstar until we purchased my wife's 2013 Terrain. She has used it a few times for directions and calls when she's forgotten her cell. My young son just took her Terrain on a long college trip. Felt better knowing he was just a button push away if he was lost, needed help, or broke down. Just picked up my new Sierra on Friday and plan to keep the Onstar in that vehicle too, but will try to get lower price when my free 6 mo trial is up Think it's a nice to have, but like many have said, it might not be that important for everyone.

I've kept it. Too much driving late in out of the way places, it's nice piece of mind. That and if someone stole it, I want to see them rot in jail.

You must not be too familiar with our legal system here in the states.

Probably won't. My Smart Phone and Google Nav is better for Route support... can't believe that you have to call someone and then have them download a route to your truck only to have it give you just the "next turn" info! But I really do like the RemoteLink app for remote start. Am glad that I will be able to use that for 5 years after I dump OnStar.

Have driven in excess of 35k mi/yr without it for the last 13 years... (2007 Caliber: 6yrs-11mos @ 248k, 2004 Yukon XL: 3yrs @ 110k, 1996 Suburban: 3yrs-1mo @ 136k)... No accidents, one road-side flat tire... can't see where it would be worth having.

Jury is still out on whether I keep XM... There are a few stations I like; but most don't fit my tastes. If I could listen to audio-books thru XM, I might consider a subscription worthwhile. Otherwise, I'll just stick with my Audible account, Ipod and Smart Phone - even if it requires me to plan ahead a little more.

If you down load the onstar app during your trial offer, you have it for free for 5 years even with a current onstar plan.
