Chattering wipers

I realize the wiper blade topic has been talked about before, but it usually gets buried in complaints about the lights.

Today, we had our first snow and the present temperature is shy under freezing--30 degrees. My wiper blades cannot work with the snow and the freezing temperatures. As the blade wipes, the rubber lays to its side against the glass and freezes at that position. As the wipe continues, the rubber stays at that position, its side sliding across the glass--chattering/shuddering. There is no squeegee effect at all. The chatter is worse than that of any vehicle I have had and at 65 years of age, I have had many.

I think this really is my only complaint about the truck. If anyone has a solution........... For the most part, I didn't have this with my 2011 GMC.

Dealer replaced my wiper blades the 2nd day I had the truck. No freezing temps or anything.. they just would chatter and skip across the windshield. Take it to the dealer.. they should replace them for free..

That's funny you posted this. I'm near Austin and had the same problem this evening (also in Sierra). I stopped and got a new set from Oreilies which was fun because they were like $38.. Have not put them on yet, hoping it was just the cold temps effecting them so I can return these cause I'm broke. Haven't made my first payment and it's already costing me $

Here are some problems with wiper blades. Avoid getting wax containing car wash soap on the windshield because if wax builds up, it will cause the blades to skitter across. The solution if to wipe down the windshield and the wiper blades with 70% rubbing alcohol, which removes wax. Wiper blades get dry and brittle as they get older, but thisobviously cannot be the problem with new trucks. It seems to me that GM is experimenting with cheap junk and used some shady supplier for these blades. Get them replaced.

I had my new truck for 2 days and wanted to show it off so I drove about 25 miles to my son's house. There was a light drizzle on the trip to his house and on the trip home. The wipers chattered terrible both going to his house and on the return trip - couldn't leave the wipers ON or OFF. I had new factory (Anco brand?) blades installed by the dealer and have noticed much improvement - not perfect, but better. I may try the 70% rubbing alcohol trick.

+1

Every time I wash my truck, I clean the wipers with alcohol pads and it keeps them working like new.

my wipers would only chatter when I first turned them on but then they were fine after the initial start. however today in Houston we had a lot of ice everywhere and I was driving and my wipers no skip and hop and make all sorts of noise and my windshield was defrosted before I ever turned them on.

also my HID's no longer work either not sure if it's due to the ice or something else happened.

I usually wiper the rubber down really good with a damp rag from time to time. That can help with the chattering. Possible something is on windshield.. make sure it's clean too. Freezing temps and the rubber don't mix well so the rubber can be somewhat deformed for a bit. And last resort, If nothing seems to work, yeah take it in for warranty.

My truck is three weeks old. Truck has never been washed. Wipers chatter like a m ef er. I guess they will get replaced when it goes in for the recall next Friday.

I am having more of a problem with them freezing, than chattering. The chattering seems be more a result of a dirty, salt-infested state of NJ. But the Freezing up seems to be caused by the solid plastic scoop they changed to, that doesnt allow the snow to melt from engine heat.

I had the same problem. I found it more to be a problem with the arms themselves... The rubber has to sit perfect to a 90 degree angle to the windshield. if it slants at all it will be quiet in one direction and chatter on return. Take a adjustable wrench and twist the arm back to correct position.

I also just replaced the cheap factory wipers with Bosch Icon 22 OE. BEST WIPER EVER.

Chevy use to use the Bosch Icons.. Im guessing they cut that good thing because of the $ and put this crap on our expensive trucks.

Advance auto has the Icons for $10 off on a pair right now. You wont be sorry.

Stay away from Trico. They are as bad as the factory.

YUP...same thing with my 2014 Silverado LTZ-Z71. Most expensive truck I have ever owned -by choice. I was excited when I picked it up from the dealer. Shocked right out of the gate.....first light rain we had my wipers were very LOUD and noisy. Went right back to the dealer and they took wipers off another new truck and swapped with mine. Made no difference-still noisy in steady or light rain. VERY ANNOYING.

Went on a hunting trip with a friend in his new Ford pickup. I could not help but notice how "quiet" his wipers performed. Terrible for the price you pay and now I have to put up with this!!

    • Just did an injector/HPFP replacement on Pepper at 192,400 miles; close enough to 200K, RIGHT? (If 200K is considered life end and to me it isn't). But hey, to each his own.    Have never run a catch can on this vehicle. Back side of every valve looked like a new valve spray painted semigloss black. Port walls looked 'neat' (all a normal result of passive EGR via VVT) Zero build up even in AFM cylinders. Just color. It uses no measurable oil and never has.    At 155,000 I put her on E-85 and a borescope of the cylinders at plug change showed very clean pistons and valve faces. The replaced injector tips looked new. (It was the pump piston seal that was leaking). Oh well, have six good backups.    Still gets 28 mpg on gas (highway average) and over 20 (highway) on alky. UOA's look good and runs as good now as it did when I bought it. Better in fact.    What improvement would a Catch Can provide this motor?     And given all this I expect that IF I installed one I'd see some water/gas/oil vapor accumulation. Byproducts of normal combustion.   Having said that, IF my motor used an appreciable amount of oil I'd consider it a useful 'crutch' until I had the situation corrected OR if bore polished, until I junked it or rebuilt it to stave off repeated plug fouling.    I'm not telling you what I THINK. But what its DONE.
    • Love the look. I'm a SCSB lover myself.    Two items. 1.) A spacer changes scrub radius but this also changes when we use wheels of different offsets. A little isn't a big deal. 2.) Steel wheels, alloy wheels all have different thickness. Same effect on the stud and lug nut as a spacer. When hub centric the wheel isn't supported by the stud. It's supported by the hub. The stud just keeps it all together.
    • I had a evap sol go bad a couple weeks ago. . I replaced it.  While watching live data at the time I saw I had some cylinder 1 misfires. No MIL but on live data I could see ~50 at startup and about 70 more after an hour a drive all on cyl 1.  I also noticed that the LTFT were -5% to -15% always.  And that bank 2 is always -3% richer than bank 1. Even across all driving modes, city, highway, etc it’s always 3% richer than bank 1. So I start with the misfire. Swapped coil, plug, and plug wires from 1 to 3. No follow. I got an Injector reseal kit, pulled the D/s injector rail, swapped #1 and #3 injectors, resealed them, reinstalled and retested.  The misfire followed to 3. So I ordered and replaced all 8 injectors, spark plugs, and plug wires. Also replaced the 1 time use fuel pipes under the intake manifold.  Injectors that were in the truck since new were  Part # 12668390.  I replaced them with # 12742701 Got from RockAuto. Pretty certain they’re genuine and the correct ones. I called a friend at a parts store who told me “the 12742701 were the correct superseded part # for the originals I was replacing”. So started truck after replacing all that and it’s running -15 - -30 LTFTs. I reset the fuel trims with GDS2 and drove it for a 60 miles trip each way. There have been no changes in the LTFTs.  I checked if the HPFP was leaking into the crankcase. I removed the pvc and watched the trims. No difference.  I checked the alcohol content and it was at 10%  I’m out of ideas here. Truck seems to run great. Just always rich on the fuel trims.  Anyone with any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated.  I ran an injector balance test just for the heck of it and it came back this. I’m confused.  I have gds2 and some other diag tools if anyone knows of anything I should test next.
