Why is there no 4x4 dash indicator light ??

I'm just wondering why so many people are switching back and forth so rapidly between 4x4 and 2wd. Or even auto by that means. If the roads are bad, leave it in auto or 4x4. I'm pretty sure that's what the auto funchtion was invented for. When you need the traction around town at stop lights and what not, it's there. The constant engage/disengage of your transfer case is not a way to prolong it's life.

I'm pretty sure that the light hasn't been included since auto 4wd was put on these trucks. Hence why a couple of guys with newer work trucks and "the stick" have lights - you put it in 4x4 and it stayed there. If you have it on auto, the light would be constantly on and off with the engaging and disengaging.

Although my truck does not have a dash indicator, the selector is high enough/large enough to be seen by quick glance. I think this is more so what people are looking for.

 

I don't like to drive around in auto longer than necessary. Since I drive highways (mostly) auto doesn't really help me all that much. It's launches and stops that I usually use it. I also don't have traction control nor stabilitrack.

Not my truck but you can see at a quick glance that the selects are easy to quick glance at.

 

(Interesting, that picture also has that vehicle with quad steer. Not sure what the vehicle is though.)

That's in an SUV actually, have to be a Suburban, don't think they ever made a Quadrasteer Tahoe.

 

I agree though, it's a lot easier to see what drive it's in with a push button selector vs a dial. Mine is pretty bright too.

I have to admit I've driven a long way in "Auto" when I should have been in 2WD. I'm still getting used to the layout of all the new gauges and dials. Trying to make it a habit of looking to the left and checking the transfer case dial before I put it in gear..... I can see where an indication on the screen would be nice, and it should be easily doable... Programming HMI is what I do....

The same issue exists on the 900's. A couple of guys had the dealer reprogram the truck with a VIN from a low trim level truck with the lever on the floor so that the light will come on in the cluster.

5 months ago I purchased a 2015 GMC Canyon and prior to this had 2004 Toyota 4Runner.

 

While the new Canyon is a great vehicle with many amenities and conveniences that are not found in Tacoma product for similar price. It also pulls my RV trailer a lot easier than the 4Runner did. Backup camera makes hooking to trailer a breeze. The Toyota did have a 4x4 indicator dash light. In addition, the 4x4 know was located high enough for the driver to easily see its position.

 

From my perspective, there are three misses on Canyon vehicle that should be incorporated in 2017 Canyon/Colorado

 

1) Have a permanent dash light for 4x4 or Auto mode. The knob is poorly located and when driving, I have to physically lean to the side to look under steering wheel - thus the need for a light (especially as an indicator for spouses).

2) Keyless start

3) Should also have an option for heated and extended mirrors (for towing) - could be sold as a package

They have a light on the dash to tell you the lights are on, the high beams are on, the fog lights are on, and all those should be obvious, so why not a 4h or 4l for something not so obvious without looking down and over while driving? I think there should be an indicator and think a manual shift T case should be available on more than the base models.

I was thinking the same thing thanks my 15 Sierra has it and its simple to pull up on the dash from the steering wheel controls and I have a small light to on the knob.

Oddly enough, I don't think my '15 Silverado has that. Hmm. Maybe it does. I haven't played all that much with the instrument cluster yet. I'll have to get back to you. However, I don't find it a necessity to have a dash indicating 4H or 4L.

You may have to turn this screen on. It's in the settings. Use the steering controls to access the settings and turn it on. It will display 2WD/AUTO/4Hi/4Lo. If I am driving in inclimate weather, you can just put that screen on.

 

But I know whether I am in auto or 2wd simply by the feeling of the Transfer Case turning under foot.

In the 2016 brochure it's list the Inclinometer on the All Terrian, but they may all have it.

 

 

I couldn't find it on mine. It's hidden under the DIV, options, additional pages or something like that. And it was labeled Off Road, not Inclinometer.

 

But I have it. Lights up the wells and to show traction changes.

    • Most thermostatically controlled ATF systems use a 'wax' pill just like the one in your water thermostat. They work on the expansion volume of the wax and the pill is constructed in such a way as to limit the travel to remain within that range. This means it has an opening temperature often called the 'cracking temperature' and a fully open temperature. For whatever reason oil is designated by it's fully open temperature and water by it's cracking temperature.    Between the two it the "Regulating Temperature" The entire range is about 20 F from closed to open. In your example the lower limit, opening point of 145 F then has a fully open temp of 165 F and a throttling temperature of 155 F.    Thing is, the throttling temperature needs two things to work properly. Enough system load high enough to reach the minimum and a heat sink (cooler/exchanger) large enough to prevent any load applied from exceeding the fully open temperature.    If your system exceeds the fully open temperature it is screaming MORE COOLER.    Here is the silly part of the whole thermostat system where the oil is cooled/heated by the radiator. Nothing is flowing to that system until the oil temperature reaches the cracking temperature unless it is equipped with a minimum flow bypass orifice or a bypass built into the seating surface of the plunger. That system meant to get it up to temp quicker isn't doing a thing until WORK drives if from ambient to cracking temp. One a cold winter day, like zero F, it may never get hotter than about 110 F. Sometimes not even that.    People forget or are young enough to not know that until this millennia transmissions were cooled by the radiator cold tank alone and without a thermostat at all.  In the 50's they weren't even cooled. OEMs learn everything the hard way.    When an OEM tells you the trans "Works best" between 175 F and 220 F it means works best for THEM. The transmission thermostat is fuel play. If you watch you trans temps like I do you will learn that it may take a hundred miles if you are not towing and not driving more than say 55-60 mph on a zero F day to even reach 120 F and it might sit there all day if it's colder. Yet if functions perfectly over about 100 F. It may need to get a bit warmer for the fuel and spark maps to go without an multiplier.    Worry more about too hot. Use a cooler large enough to put that thermostat in range.         
    • Around 2008 if memory serves they took sulfur out. That was when diesel went up. 
    • Question for you Grumpy, why is diesel so much more than gasoline? Seems to me that it may be slightly a little less refined than gas and it doesn't have 10% alcohol which presumably lowers the price of gas

    • How many years have I pointed out every point in that link to the folks here and been avalanched with criticisms and outright hostilities at times? I ran counter to even the great CUSTOMBOSS and Lake Speed Jr and the half dozen experts on YouTube and in the final.....GM, Physics (Stribeck) backs that Grumpy old Bear.    Honestly, I never said a thing engineering hadn't studied silly and laid in concrete during WWII. But I'm old, the information is old and yet, the Laws of Physics are eternal.    Okay there is one exception. I vehemently disagree with their use of the word 'tolerances' when what it meant is "clearance".   The clearance is the distance between two objects. The tolerance is the degree of acceptable variation permitted in that clearance. I.E., piston to bore clearance is 0.004" with a tolerance of +/- .0002" so the clearance is in specification if it lies between 0.0038" and 0.0042". Cutting that 'tolerance in half has ZERO impact on lubrication requirements. Makes for more difficulty in manufacturing.  But a tighter clearance 'MAY'. Depends on finish. Anyway....   It's one of those statements made by people to make themselves look smarter than they are to convince people who are as un-enlighten as they seem to manipulate their behaviors. But hey, the blind leading the blind puts them both in the pit.
