How low on fuel have you gone?

I fill my tank when it gets between half and 3/4.. that way it's only $40 to fill and I'm not taking such a hit all the time. Would rather just spend a little often then one big hit.. Plus, I like keeping it filled incase of emergency or incase I get called to a client's far away in a work emergency, I am ready to go.

Me too. I fill at that point, too. Here is an additional reason for keeping it above 1/2 full:

Sudden and long lasting power outages. Yes, power outages. Gas stations can't pump fuel without electricity and we could all be suddenly without electricity as discussed in this link: http://www.outsidethebeltway.com/sniper-attack-on-power-station-in-california-raises-terrorism-threat/

That's normally what I do. Psychologically the price shock isn't so bad.

Fill around 1/4 always. The ice storm that hit the northeast in 2008 took out power all over and for much of the first day, all roads out of town were blocked and the only gas station in town had no power. 1/4 tank is good for 100 miles or so in most cases, enough to find gas or get out of dodge if need be.

Good read here. I've always been a drive it like you stole it, run it to the bare bones empty before putting fuel in it.... May be not any more. Never killed a fuel pump, but that doesn't mean it will not happen. I think I've put 24.51 gallons in at one point. I refuse to buy gasoline in the town I work in, so I'll drive the 15 miles home to save a nickle a gallon. If I have Brookshire points I can save even more.

I'm not sure driving 15 miles to save a nickel adds up to much. When I got the 2011 I figured I could survive if gas hit $5/gallon. Wouldn't be happy but it wouldn't hurt too bad. That hasn't changed and I can't say I chase fuel prices either. If I'm on normal gas I use the Marathon by my apartment because it's ethanol free and it'll maximize my range otherwise when I'm on E85 I just buy it at the closest Meijer in most cases.

A 34 gallon tank can hold 38 gallons.

The low fuel warning will show, with 8 gallons, remaining.

Not true at all. In my 1996 Silverado I ran the tank dry a couple of times. Each time it filled back up with 25.5 to 26 gallons.

My 2003 yukon LOW fuel warning comes on with 50 miles remaining based on last 50(?) miles average fuel economy. Same thing with the new truck, but it still displays miles to empty until 25 miles I believe.

I wouldn't say I was just doing so to save a nickel, more of the principle of the thing. Savings is just a bonus I guess. I wish there were more places here that carried ethanol free gas. It is hard to find, and when you do find it the cost is much higher. I did a test in my 2007 with 91 octane no ethanol and found that the added cost only decreased my cost/mile when I was making long haul trips on interstate. I might have to do the same now and see how that works out with the 2014.

Here is how many gallons I have filled up each time. Never have had a problem in any of my cars and I usually let them run low before filling sometimes until after the warning light kicks on.
