Frame scrape

Yesterday I had a load of wood in the bed of my truck (14 silverado 4x4). The load made the truck squat but it still had an inch before the bump stops hit the axle. I took it easy while driving home. To unload I backed over a slightly uneven part of my property

After unloading I noticed that the wax on the frame in the rear wheel wells was scrapped off in the same spot on both sides. The frame was shinny bare metal on both sides.

Could the leaf springs have rubbed the frame? In the unloaded state it appeared that it wasn't possible. post-13567-139558322263_thumb.jpg

There is also a slight side to side motion of the axle as well as up and down so it could have been the springs. If so, this is a major fail for GM engineers. There should be plenty of clearance there.

I would of guessed thats from the tires

I was thinking tires but with the squat the tires would have hit the carpet wheel well

If it was the leaf, I would assume the rear cross braces that protrudes out a bit more than the peeled area would also be affected as well

Here's more pics

Can't tell from your pics but I'm just curious if the inside of the leaf springs show rub marks also. Is it the same on both left and right wheel wells?

Posted

Almost identical both sides. Can't see marks on leafs tho.

And no, I didn't use pressure washer at close range

There being space left before the bump stop is irrelevant. How much weight do you think you had back there?

Posted

Weight wise id say 1000 lbs. I crawled under the truck and there are no signs of rubbing. I wonder if it is just a coincidence that I noticed it yesterday There seems to be other spots that are peeling as well. Wonder if i have one of the defect trucks

Weird. 1000 lbs is well below the max payload- I wonder how much side to side play there is in the suspension?

shit! The springs are scraping against the frame. Massive issue here. There most likely would have been side to side movement when you were driving it. Its scrapped on the bump stop support which is angled slightly inwards from the frame. Must be some type of defect in the spring, I think. Also, why is there and excessive oil film all over the back in the pictures?

This doesn't look like the springs were rubbing, its too "clean" of a scrap if that makes any sense. This looks like someone took a putty knife and scraped the frame coating right off.
If the springs were scraping, there would be evidence on the bare metal as well.

How is it too "clean"? its and even scrape that started at the bump stop. It makes sense if he had a load and was turning side to side those springs would touch. One question that hasn't been asked is this truck lifted? Is that a block I see there? if it is that could change things alittle.

This oil leak is very interesting to me its excessive, were you driving through some type of oil spill? I think you just bottomed it out caused a scrape on that frame and might have a leak somewhere now.

Rear suspension is stock. The truck was recently krown undercoated, which all my GM vehicles have had without issue

I agree. It looks like a putty knife scrapped it off. There are no gouges on the metal and I can't find any evidence that the springs rubbed the frame.

The truck never bottomed out and was not overloaded either

I'm stumped

I think if it was the leaf, it would have hit the round cross brace that protrudes out further. post-13567-139561779116_thumb.jpg
