Dull knocking noise 2014 5.3

Hey guys,,,,

I hear a dull knocking noise under light acceleration that's more noticeable when the motor is cold than hot, but you can still hear it some when hot. It kinda sounds like a wrist pin would. The truck only has 800 miles on it and im not feeling great about this purchase. I am not certain if it is in fact a wrist pin noise and have not taken it in for service yet. Does anybody else hear knocking when under a light accel?

Thanks

Nothing from my 5.3 with 4000 miles so far. I babied it for the first 700-800 miles and drove it normally thereafter with short bursts of full throttle to pass.

If your noise is only under acceleration, I'd try first finding some high octane gasoline just to get that out of the way. I know Justin of BlackBear tuning can detect knocking when plugged in during driving for a custom tune.

The most common LS engine noise is lifters.

Good luck.

I'm thinking if you only heard it when cold, that may indicate a wrist pin. Are these new ones floaters? The older 5.7 Vortec was notorious for this when cold.

Are you sure you're not just hearing the ticking from the Direct injection injectors? They will tick.

I don't think its injector noise, its sounds like a dull knocking noise. But it quiets down when hot. I don't know what to think. It also has this whiny noise at the same time.. and noooo its not me whining...lol

My 2013 6.2 did that. Eventually, at 40,000 km, i traded it in. It got so bad it sounded like the motor was going to blow up, and 3 dealers said it was fine. Completely different motor, but I think I know the sound you speak of. I saw reports of people getting lifters changed out. I never convinced them to open it up.

OK,,,,so I changed my engine oil with Mobil One 0w 20 as recommended and fueled up with 93 octane at BP.....and drove 50 miles last night . This morning I had the same noise. So should I wait or take her in ? She has 850 ish for mileage.

I wouldn't wait. I doubt it's going to suddenly fix itself.

Most of the older LS engines had piston slap. My old 4.8L did it really bad on start up and when it was cold and it lasted a good 40k after I first noticed it and it's still goin to this day.

With all that said, I would def have GM check it out just to be sure

Do the new GM engines have oil squirters for cooling the pistons?

I know our SRT 6.1L engines have oil squirters and the "whiny" noise I hear from time to time at idle is the squirters. It worried me at first because I never owned an engine before that made that noise.

Fairly certain they do.

OK,,here is an update,well....... not really.

I took it in to the dealer,( where my wife works.) The service manager said he would look into it. They apparently listened and reported back that they don't hear the noise.... As I was afraid of . So I am left with take it somewhere else, or let the problem develop more. The dealer gave me a really good deal on the truck and for that I am grateful. Coupled with my wife works there, I don't know if I should push this at her work or take the service elsewhere. I don't want to cause problems where my wife works so I am in limbo until I decide what the right move is.

    • Did you ever get this worked out? Mike is doing the two start thing now too. This is after a new camera back in December.
    • I’m doing an experiment on a vehicle I don’t have much money in. I’m going by the premise that after they last 100K miles they were no mechanical problems with assembly. Or defects with the parts. With oil changes by the minder for the first 127K miles when I acquired it. I quickly went through low mileage oil changes then settled on 5k oil changes with close to 170K miles on the vehicle currently. I did have the option to turn off the cylinder deactivation. I didn’t on this vehicle because it’s in ECONOMY mode at least half the time. It should be a no brainer frequent oil changes are the key. The manufacturer gets away with the long oil changes with its severe service  maintenance. Just ask them what is normal.
    • Even set to "recirculated", the air pushes out and is hot. I have noticed that sometime it doesn't want to switch between recirculated/vented air. Say it is set to Circulated Air and I want to switch to Vented, when I click the Vented button, it just quickly lights up/clicks and immediatly switches back to Circulated. It's done this a few times now. So maybe it is an actuator getting stuck? But then, that doesn't explain the hot air when everything is off does it?
    • I wonder what the price is out at the coast, Big Sur or other out of the way locations as I bet they are charging quite a premium over the in land pumps.
    • Were you looking at the HD trucks on the GM website or the half tons as that makes all the difference. As far as I know there are only two options for the HD trucks and that is the standard 2 speed transfer case or the 2 speed transfer case that has the added 4 high auto feature and they put that transfer case by default into the LTZ and High Country although its optional in the LT and not sure if its available in the work trucks.    The half tons, that is where its been a total mess in my estimation for a few years now with most trucks below the top trim having the single speed transfer case as standard but with the option of having the two speed such as one would get by choosing the Z71 package, however then not being able to get the two speed transfer case with the towing package unless it was a higher trim truck AND had the 6.2 gas so one could combine the towing package gearing diffs with the two speed transfer case. Having said that if its a trail boss package then it gets the two speed transfer case but not necessarily able to get the tow package as it would depend on trim level and engine chosen. Believe me, people have bought the GM half tons assuming "of course it will have a two speed transfer case" only to find out after when they really pay attention to what they now own .... crap, there is NO low range !.    I don't believe Ford or Ram have gone that way yet with their half tons but like I say its been a few years now that GM has done this with the half tons.
