2WD Lift

Opinions are like assholes, everyone has one, lift the truck if you want, it has nothing to do with 2WD or 4x4. I know a bunch of people who have expensive $40,000-$50,000 trucks that are lifted with 33's, 37's and they won't dare take it anywhere near rocks, they do it for cosmetic purposes, it's their truck!

 

The same amount of people who say buy a diesel if you get a truck, or get a v8 not a v6 or why get a truck if you don't tow. Blah blah blah, do whatever you want to do to your vehicle, you'll blend right in.

Ive seen Z71 packages on 2WD trucks, so go ahead and lift at lease you would only have to change one gear. How many people take their 4WD off road?, less than 1/2 I bet.

It's your truck you can do what you want, if people don't agree so what. I agree with AMX and SMiller . To me there's nothing worse than one of those mega lifted "parking lot 4X4" jockeys who probably don't even know how to puy there truck in 4wd.

Me personally? I would not lift a 2wd anymore than I would put a roush cosmetic package on a v6 mustang (used to know a guy with that). Just my .02

Yea but he could put a blower and gas on that V6 and blow away the real Roush and save a ton of money, I know a guy that did that too.

Hey guys, I really like the look of a lifted truck with aggressive wheels, however my truck is 2WD...

 

A few people told me that it would be stupid to lift it without a 4 x 4. Can anyone weigh in with some advice on this?

 

Unless you're actually mudding the thing or offroading in the desert/rockies (and addressing the loss in hp/tq as well by modding the engine/exhaust/gears to compensate) one could argue its stupid to lift a 4x4 truck too....

 

It is all for looks anyhow.

 

Take the levels people get on their trucks: worse mpg, chew up ball joints/tie rods, worse handling, but better looks. These problems are exacerbated much more when you talk about really lifting.

Most guys who legit offroad upgrade w/ suspension AND body lift AND gears and do headers/intake/tune etc.

 

I had a friend w/ a jacked up V8 F150 in higschool, my 2WD ranger was quicker to 60 mph....the thing was a gutless wonder.

My 2 cents..... 99.99% of the 4wd trucks that are leveled/lifted don't need the extra ground clearance for off-road use. In fact, I recall very few posts in this forum where ground clearance was even mentioned. The "look" is what is nearly always discussed...and that's with the guys with 4wd trucks. Pretty much the same discussion goes on about tires. How big to get, how aggressive? Etc.. 99.99% is "waxers", mall crawlers, or whatever your favorite term is. Lifting a truck has more practical downsides than upsides for all but some infinitesimal amount of use. Lifted trucks handle like crap and are more prone to rollover.

So let's just get it on the table look at it for what it really is. A friend of mine who has been in the automotive, motorcycle, and off-road vehicle accessory manufacturing for 5 decades uses a hand gesture to sum up most of the modifications that are done by "enthusiasts".... He forms a circle with his thumb and forefinger ... follow along and we'll do this together ... then he moves his hand in a reciprocating motion an inch or two... If more emphasis is desired, more or faster motion is used. All of this stuff we do to our trucks is because we want to do this to ourselves. We like the way it feels.

 

So, I'm as much for the OP lifting his truck as anyone with a 4wd. He should do what makes him feel good. He's entitled to his pleasure as much as any 4wd owner.

BTW, he used this gesture when one of his guys asked what a drawing was about a week ago when I was at his shop with my HID projector adapter plate project. Just so ya know... but don't tell anyone I do it too.

I had a 2wd F150 i put a 6" lift and 35" mud tires on. I always got asked why I did it, its only a 2wd. I simply told everyone I like the look of it and even the lift and tires alone still help a great deal when you do take it out on trails. You don't always need 4wd to do stuff. If you like it then do it.
