Moving Tire Sensors.

Have you all never mounted a tire?

Do you not realize they have a tire machine that presses the side wall in and on or off the wheel?

 

How in the world would any tire ever work on any car if pushing the side wall damaged your tires.

 

Its your money... feel free to waste it on new tire pressure sensors.

Or call and ask ANY, yes ANY I dare you to fine a real tire shop that says

you need to buy new sensors.

 

And you can do it at home, but I am not going to explain how to break a bead on a tire to this group.

If you want to know that, ask a jeep forum. They change tires on the trail pretty regularly.

 

Mine were moved yesterday by Discount Tire, for Free. TPMS works fine and both sets of tires work fine.

And yes they hold air... amazing that I bead can be broken and then re seated.

 

 

 

 

 

OK from your original post, I was under the impression that you did this yourself in your garage!

 

I didn't realize the tire shop did it for you.

Sorry.... not worth the effort. Just take it to a shop.

to new wheels.

 

When rotating tires your tire shop should reprogram them.

 

haha what the hell! i need to tell the dealer this! since the last rotation the DIC shows my fronts on the back and vise versa...

I would be worried about re-inflating and re-sealing around the bead.

 

I ended up taking it to my local tire shop and they broke the tire down, used a grinder to clean up the inside edge of the rim (had this issue a few times now on my cars/truck, seems like these newer aluminum rims are starting to corrode as the salt gets to them in the wintertime), and then remounted the tire.

 

French, I see you changed it now where you said the tire shop took the tire off, I thought you did it yourself.

 

Personally, I usually buy some like new takeoff tire sensors on ebay (~$100) and then get the TPMS tire reset tool and then I never have to keep going back the tire shop each time you rotate wheel sets.

I don't plan on keeping the factory wheels and tires.

 

If you have the money there is nothing wrong with buying new ones.

But I typically see them closer to $50 a wheel. They are $80 per wheel

for my corvette.

 

Not everyone has a spare $200 sitting around when you can

just move them for free.

 

I have seem a far amount of people asking if they can move theirs.

It seems wheel manufactures are telling people to buy new ones.

More profit for them.

On the corvette you can program the position with a large magnet.

I have asked a few times if it is the same on these trucks but have not gotten an answer.

 

My tire shop has never forgotten to re position mine.

I have not had corrosion issues. This truck is only 15 days old.

Let me think about this a minute. 4 vehicles including a Corvette and a new truck. Aftermarket wheels. And $200 seems expensive?

oh, more confusion/misinterpretation, so you'll get rid of the factory wheels then. I was thinking you were swapping back and forth like from using the factory wheels in winter, and aftermarket wheels in summer like some of us do in the snow/salt areas. That's what I was thinking so it would make more sense to just get sensors for your extra wheels in that scenario. and not keep moving the sensors every spring and fall.

 

I like to buy extra factory wheel/tire sets sometimes and I always hate it when they remove the tire sensors...

I did not buy the new truck cause I have extra money.

Wife lost her job, I sold two cars to get one. Its actually $400 less per month.

I'm pissed I had to sell my 2010 that already had a lift and wheels and tires.

 

Therefor I am putting a lift wheels and tires on the new one.

I would have much rather kept my 2010. I owed a hell of a lot less on it.

 

Only got the wheels cause I have good credit. Trying to limit debt.

Had to have tires, the towing bill for getting stuck would cost as much as the tires.

Selling factory set will cover a large chunk of new wheels and tires.

 

Corvette is almost paid off, Toyota is paid for, C10 is paid for, 46 is paid for.

 

That is awesome! I paid $50 a piece for them for my 2010.

while what you are saying has some merit to it, swapping sensors is not hard by any means but it does require a tire machine to break the bead off the top part of the wheel (lets just pretend we are talking about OEM GM wheels). you could use a rachet and torx bit to take the screw out of the sensor that connects it to the valve. but the threads or screw itself sometimes likes to get stuck and takes some force to take out and put in so you need a lot of downward force so you don't strip the screw. you know how sometimes you try to take the short cut and it ends up taking longer because A) you run in to a road block like the screw getting stuck and you strip the torx B) you end up having to do it the longer way in the end. that's what could possibly happen doing it by just breaking the top bead of the tire down and using a ratchet and torx bit. im not saying it would not work but I am saying it could potentially backfire. i personally would just take the tire completely off and take the sensor out. it took an extra 30 seconds and saved me from the headache of potentially stripping the screw.

 

moral of the story is don't try this at home because you will kick yourself. let a tire shop do it. yes with discount tire if you get new wheels through them then they do not charge you to swap the sensors and i am not sure about other tire shops (i do not work with discount tire or represent them just stating from my personal experience).

 

i hope this post made sense. kind of hard to explain in text.

Does anyone know if the process for moving the TPS reading in the DIC have changed for the 2014 models (compared to the process for previous years)? This thread has made me want to just do it myself instead of waiting haha.

OK I'm new to this hole thing, so if I rotate tires it can't figure it out? In my grand Prix I just hit a reset button, am I missing something?

This is what I am checking to see if it is the same for our trucks:

 

'Each TPMS sensor has a unique identification code.

Any time you rotate your vehicle's tires or replace one

or more of the TPMS sensors, the identification codes

will need to be matched to the new tire/wheel position.

The sensors are matched to the tire/wheel positions in

the following order: driver side front tire, passenger side

front tire, passenger side rear tire, and driver side rear

tire using a TPMS diagnostic tool. See your dealer for

service.

The TPMS sensors can also be matched to each tire/

wheel position by increasing or decreasing the tire's air

pressure. If increasing the tire's air pressure, do not

exceed the maximum inflation pressure indicated on the

tire's sidewall.

To decrease air-pressure out of a tire you can use the

pointed end of the valve cap, a pencil-style air pressure

gauge, or a key.

You have two minutes to match the first tire/wheel

position, and five minutes overall to match all four tire/

wheel positions. If it takes longer than two minutes, to

match the first tire and wheel, or more than five minutes

to match all four tire and wheel positions the matching

process stops and you need to start over.

 

 

 

The TPMS sensor matching process is outlined below:

1. Set the parking brake.

2. Turn the ignition switch to ON/RUN with the

engine off.

3. Press the Remote Keyless Entry (RKE)

transmitter's LOCK and UNLOCK buttons at the

same time for approximately five seconds. The

horn sounds twice to signal the receiver is in

relearn mode and TIRE LEARNING ACTIVE

message displays on the DIC screen.

If your vehicle does not have RKE, press the

Driver Information Center (DIC) vehicle information

button until the PRESS V TO RELEARN TIRE

POSITIONS message displays. The horn sounds

twice to signal the receiver is in relearn mode and

TIRE LEARNING ACTIVE message displays on

the DIC screen.

If your vehicle does not have RKE or DIC buttons,

press the trip odometer reset stem located on the

instrument panel cluster until the PRESS V TO

RELEARN TIRE POSITIONS message displays.

The horn sounds twice to signal the receiver is in

relearn mode and TIRE LEARNING ACTIVE

message displays on the DIC screen.

4. Start with the driver side front tire.

5. Remove the valve cap from the valve cap stem.

Activate the TPMS sensor by increasing or

decreasing the tire's air pressure for five seconds,

or until a horn chirp sounds. The horn chirp, which

may take up to 30 seconds to sound, confirms that

the sensor identification code has been matched to

this tire and wheel position.

6. Proceed to the passenger side front tire, and

repeat the procedure in Step 5.

7. Proceed to the passenger side rear tire, and repeat

the procedure in Step 5.

8. Proceed to the driver side rear tire, and repeat the

procedure in Step 5. The horn sounds two times to

indicate the sensor identification code has been

matched to the driver side rear tire, and that the

TPMS sensor matching process is no longer

active. The TIRE LEARNING ACTIVE message on

the DIC display screen goes off.

9. Turn the ignition switch to LOCK/OFF.

10. Set all four tires to the recommended air pressure

level as indicated on the Tire and Loading

Information label.

11. Put the valve caps back on the valve stems.'

Thanks bladz, starting to wish I had my 05, nothing worst then a freaking vehicle that to smart for its own good, I'm gonna print that when I get home
