I think there's hp gains if they are before the cats. Not positive though.

 

I'm sure you would see some gains but would require a tune. Anywhere downstream of the O2 sensors would not.

Just an update on my gutted 3rd cat. I noticed a few days after gutting it, that I had a new rattle and that my cutout had 0 effect on the exhaust sound. I knew the cats couldn't have that kind of effect, so I crawled back under the truck and noticed that I didn't clamp the exhaust back properly so my exhaust was full sounding without a muffler or anything. Only have the cats on the headers and then released into the world, causing the extreme sounds

When you gutted the 3rd cat was there any engine issues? Is there any sensors attached to it? I dont want to mess with anything that would cause CEL

There will be no vehicle related issues with removing/gutting the 3rd cat.

It will void any warranty related to that 3rd cat. You may get a dick dealer that might "try" to throw it in your face but to avoid that, just gut it like the previous poster did and they will never know. There are dealers that will claim a CAI will void an engine warranty but they are a donkey punch away from licking windows.

 

I took mine in today for my transmission recall and I have headers and no cats on my truck. The service manager actually called me to make sure I brought my software with me because I have all kinds of DTC codes now since they flashed it back to stock.

TDT is right. Nothing will happen with a CEL if you do anything to the 3rd cat as it is unmonitored and downstream of any sensors

Yes, 6.2. It's actually still fairly quiet since I'm running stock cat-back but it does sound mean as hell now that I have it all tuned. Check posts 23 and 24 in link to thread below.

You ever going to do a full exhaust? You can tell that thing wants to roar but that stock system won't let it. I'm going to cut my third cat and place my cutout there in hopes of getting a throaty race sound, just been trying to find the right shop to do the work.

I'm an old man, and very picky about how my truck sounds since I actually tow with it. It's shifting at 6300, so it's roaring... It just is doing it into a pillow.

I have a 3" Pypes electric cutout and 3" Stainless Steel Y-pipe for sale. I had it on my truck a week and took it back off to put on a magnaflow exhaust. Got a cutout installed on my 6.2 yesterday and I'm really liking it. The truck sounds a lot more aggresive. Here's a video I took.

I've debated doing this myself. Sometimes, I like to raise hell. Sometimes, I'm in the mood for some peace & quiet. It would be nice to have both at the touch of a button. Personally, I don't know of anyone who has actually done it though....

Not a solution, but I wonder why GM doesn't offer something. My 2015 Corvette has the performance exhaust option and when you set the mode to sport or track, there are butterfly valves that open and it goes from OK sound to a nice raspy idle and louder under acceleration. But, when I it is set in touring, the flaps don't open and it stays quieter -GM says open is a 5HP gain, no big deal, but it sounds great.
