If you don't you'll have higher engine wear. The Seafoam when used as a top engine cleaner will wash down the cylinder walls and you'll have high iron numbers-seen it before on used oil analysis*. I only use these cleaners right before an oil change. I also don't recommend adding it to the oil-it's an old school harsh solvent that is not good to get in your oil.

*Years go I was dumb enoigh to do this with GM top engine cleaner and my iron #'s quadrupled for that period and were normal before and after.

Curious can this be done in ones garage 117 for labor did they have to remove parts or such just curious I'm thinking about doing the same thing also is this product sold in autozone wish we had before and after pics but I understand these engines are like a temples maze glad u did it and haven't had any issues hopefully I get around it

You can do the BG service yourself if you have the right tools. Check it out on YouTube to see some videos of people doing it themselves and the results they got. There's a special dispenser you need to put the chemicals into the intake....some kind of canister contraption with a pressure gauge on it. The $117 was mostly time really. They don't remove any parts or anything.

Yeah I had just gotten one of my free oil changes before I did my BG service so I ended up having to pay for a second oil change after only 700 miles of driving after the previous change. I did not plan that well at all....

CRC GDI IVD INTAKE VALVE CLEANER treats the "dry" side of the system to clean tough deposits from intake valves, while CRC 1-TANK Power Renew® treats the "wet" side; the fuel system, resulting in the DEFINITIVE cleanup for your fuel system.

Doesn't say anywhere to change oil

What about a couple tanks of E85 every once in a while ? :dunno:

Won't do a thing for the intake valves. The fuel is injected directly into the cylinders, so the valves don't get washed off.

Yeah, it's an aerosol can.. others in this thread are talking about pouring from a bottle of liquid sea foam which is a big difference. Also even using the serosol spray if you don't have the RPM's high enough you can easily contaminate the oil, but hey it's your engine. Of course the manufacturer doesn't tell you that you need to change the oil-an extra step adds complications. Ask over at BITOG if you should change your oil afterwards. ;) High iron everytime.

Alright I'm confused lol I thought u were ?? I don't know never had service done before so my lack of experience with this does not help

I just read this entire thread! And, I have a few simple questions: all this valve mess is due to direct injection?!? My '96 Silverado extended cab long bed 350 got 19.84 mpg on the last trip I checked it. That's good I think. So, is direct injection for better mpg, more power, etc.? At the expense of maybe shorter engine life?Y'all can see I'm one for long term usage of my trucks...

Yes direct fuel injection is made for better fuel efficiency, better timing, more power, and etc. though it comes at cost that many are noticing after 12-15k miles that valves look as if they seen 80K+miles. Your 96 350 getting 19.84mpg is shocking to me those are some good #s

Ok, so lately I've been noticing the 6.2 stumbling a bit, hesitating, lower mileage - even more than expected for winter - etc. and began getting more concerned about intake valve buildup. 26k miles after all. Decided to Seafoam/CRC. Went with the CRC GDI IVC because #1- it appears to be a product developed specifically for this application instead of generalized top engine cleaning such as Seafoam (which I'll say has served me well in the past and may do just fine) and #2- Anything with a name comprised entirely of acronyms must mean business.

Oh. My. God.

The difference was simply amazing. I guess the bad behavior had sneaked up on me, but I had no idea just how bad it had gotten. Worth EVERY penny. Even has a $5 mail in rebate right now. I'm gonna do this every 5k miles.

  • Rough idle - gone
  • Off idle stumble - gone
  • Not-so-smooth acceleration - gone
  • Power - it's back
  • Mileage - early reports from ~100mi would suggest absolutely no less than a 4 mpg jump. No joke. Amazed
I finally ran a can of this through my engine today. My cold engine idle began to sound a little off a few months ago. When on the throttle the engine just didn't seem as crisp as it used to be. I installed my Elite CC at 10k miles so I figured I had some buildup.

I disconnected the PCV line between my catch can and intake manifold and injected it that way. I had to rig the pedal to hold revs above 1k rpm or it was easy to stall out. After the can was empty I let it heatsoak for an hour, which worked out perfect for doing an oil change (Mobil1 0W-20 EP).

There is a definite improvement after using the intake cleaner. Better idle and no more off idle stumble just as bdbake noted. I highly recommend it.

The main ingredient in CRC GDI IVT is PEA - Polyether Amine. This is the same active ingredient used in Chevron Techron, but the CRC product is extremely concentrated.

Update:

I put a couple hundred miles on the truck since cleaning it and thought I'd pass along what I've noticed.

The engine definitely runs smoother - cold and warm idle, off-idle revving, highway cruising. VERY noticeable when cruising at 1700 RPM on the highway. Smooth as silk.

Since July I had what felt like torque converter shudder during WOT acceleration between 35 and 50 mph. It appears my TC is fine. Evidently this shudder was caused by a misfire, it's completely gone now.

It's hard to say if my fuel economy changed yet. If it did it's very slight.

By the time I installed my Elite CC I already had 10k miles on the truck. Also, my line of work requires making lots of short trips which probably contributed to carbon build too. Seems like I had a lot more buildup than I had anticipated for only having 15k miles on it.

    • I tried tapping it.  This might sound like a dumb question, you should feel vibration or some type of noise when it turns on? Can someone please verify? Thank you all!
    • I feel better now for my own view point and actions or lack there of towards the dealership service theme reading your post and others. GM corporate is who offers the two free oil changes on the HD trucks and I bought my truck in Feb of 2025 and those oil change offers run out within 2 years I believe and I highly doubt I will be using either one of them. I had asked if I could officially give those free services to another customer ( a friend ) and they said no, its all a GM corporate thing based on the vehicle in question. What that service advisor did however was go into a little story about how such and such customer was denied engine warranty because he had done his own oil changes because then they are not documented ... you see where that goes and so an employee playing the game of scaring the customer into having the service work done there most certainly triggered my thought process. At a later date I did talk to the person who handles warranty claims at the dealership and she said to be sure to document the oil changes and keep receipts for the oil and filter ( coped the receipts from cases of Mobil oil and case of filters I bought from them ) and the vehicles VIN, the date of service, mileage etc and staple that together as a record I would give them if that was ever needed and I keep my own log book for services for each vehicle as well. Oh and about 8 months after I bought the truck the dealer starts calling me to offer a maintenance service since they haven't seen my vehicle show up on their system ... for the mere fee of 300.00 Canadian to change the oil and rotate the tires and a few other minor checks and I declined the offer, I get the call again a couple of months later for the same thing and she could tell I was not interested and she asked if they should take my name off the call list and I said yes, do that !.    By the way did you happen to keep your factory oil filter to open it up and see the surprises inside as I expect some will show up as per the odd little sliver of metal shaving and particles that the filter does trap along with bits of grey silicone sealer that come off of the inside edge of mating surfaces. I have cut open every filter so far on my truck although few miles but have changed the oil often and the second filter was vastly better with very little of anything, that first filter was the unsettling one as I expected it would be.
    • I get why they do this…but man…not ideal. I only extract on inboard boat engines because the drains are buried and even then I hate it because it’s easy to leave a quart behind with that method.   They should market it as an “oil refresh” not oil change!
    • I only get oil changed where I can watch. Valvoline pulls through the dipstick into a see thru glass. When done they show me the dipstick. About the only way they can mess up is using the wrong oil. But that secret wouldn’t stay secret long. Honda uses TQ wrenches on everything. You can watch through a plate glass window. Discount tires does that with tires. Trust but verify.
    • I would not argue that with you. It would be pointless to argue against the truth and you speak the truth.    My question and in fact the entire point of this thread is an exploration into the levers of wear which happens no matter how well we maintain our powertrains.    Some of these levers we exert a good deal of influence over which can and do result is lower wear, longer powertrain life. Some others we are sort of stuck with.    An engine is typically done when the ring to bore seal no longer is able to do the job effectively. Normally the first thing to go in a engine otherwise well maintained and adult driven is this seal.    Looking into the means, methods, products and attitudes that influence the rate of wear seems a worthwhile inquiry to me.
