yep, gotta admit the scraper is genius. Probably more reliable than the wife. DEFINITELY less mouthy about the situation.

I just did my truck with seafoam. I can't tell a huge difference yet, but we will see over time. Used my window scraper to keep the rpm around 2000.

Ok, so lately I've been noticing the 6.2 stumbling a bit, hesitating, lower mileage - even more than expected for winter - etc. and began getting more concerned about intake valve buildup. 26k miles

Since everyone is talking about mpg in a 6.2 here is my new denali 25 and 50 mile average all highway at 75 mph

I seriously doubt many have managed to better my best readings seen here

Eastbound on 70?

no i have not hit i-70 yet i only have 1800 miles and 550 of those were on my way back home from the Kansas dealer where i bought it. i only got about 23 mpg on that trip the truck was brand new and i had a headwind

the 32.9 mpg average was just as i passed through he Denver tech center area headed north to thorton and was in slower traffic.

to be honest if city traffic is light i can get close to 25 mpg in town if i can keep rolling. i firmly believe that if GM had the start stop technology found on other cars where it kills the engine at stoplights i think the city mpg might improve about 2-3 mpg

Wow those are great numbers. 25.4 mpg has been my best average over 50 miles so far.

i have a theory, just like how us folks at high elevation don't get much HP out of the engine due to lack of air. we also have less of it to push out of the way at highway speed!

 

also i get nearly the same number in the mountain passes. yes it gets about 10-12 mph up the hills but uses no fuel on the downhill at all due to fuel cutoff and a higher gear ratio allows less engine braking if you let it roll to the next hill often times your averaging close to 70 MPG on the down hills to make up for it.

also mountain roads are usually 65 mph

how often do you guys think this should be done? I have almost 18k and noticed a slight drop in my avg mpgs lately. I cleaned my filter (airaid) at my last oil chage (15K) but thinking of doing this now. Too soon?

According to my mechanic and BG, within every 15,000 miles. The longer you drive without cleaning the valves, the more the "crud" gets baked onto them and the harder it is to remove down the road. Significantly high mileage may mean that you can never get the valves 100% clean with chemicals alone and tearing down the engine and using a mechanical method may be required.

The good news: I did the BG induction service yesterday and the truck seems to be running great afterwards, no issues so far *knocks on wood*

 

The bad news: I could not get before and after pictures of the valves. The way the intake is designed on these engines, you can't get the borescope in there because of all the bends and turns. We would have had to remove the intake manifold to see the valves and I wasn't about to do that on an engine with only 15k miles.

 

So the catch can debate will have to rage on. I will say I have not really noticed much of an improvement with the truck as others have reported. It honestly wasn't really running bad before I did the service, I just wanted to get in before 15k miles to take advantage of BG's warranty. So if guys without catch cans are noting an improvement in performance after the service and I'm not noticing much of anything, I'd argue that's evidence in favor of the catch can doing what people say it should be doing....keeping the valves clean. I only had 11,500 miles on the truck when I installed the catch can so there wasn't much time for a lot of build-up to happen and dramatically affect performance, although I don't doubt that some buildup did occur and the service yesterday took care of it.

 

I'm going to post this in the catch can thread as well.

 

 

EDIT: Forgot to add it was about $78 in materials and $117 in labor for the BG service so $195 total. You have to get your oil changed as well afterwards so factor that into the total if you're considering doing this service.

 

Curious can this be done in ones garage 117 for labor did they have to remove parts or such just curious I'm thinking about doing the same thing also is this product sold in autozone wish we had before and after pics but I understand these engines are like a temples maze glad u did it and haven't had any issues hopefully I get around it

Wow u get better mpg than most 5.3 can achieve lately my 5.3 has been low mpg my previous 14 e85 was doing better hate that 2015s come with an option of e85 should be standard

Yes what's interesting is I only managed about 33 mpg in my Cadillac with a 3.6l over the same route.

Same with my Lexus IS 350 about 33 mpg.

I also used to have a corvette z06 and got about 32 mpg over the same route.

The secret to good mpg really doesn't have a lot to do with displacement. It's all about gearing and wind resistance.

Small engine cars get better mpg only because at full throttle or anything in between they simply cannot burn enough fuel even with a lead foot driver.

If you use only the power necessary to get up to speed and maintain you can make a v8 just as efficient.

Additionally a vehicle that is fairly heavy can carry momentum a lot farther than a small car.

Hybrids do it in a similar way by storing electricity in a battery.

      Can ask that about a lot of places.   Holiday sells 91 for $1 over 87 octane. BP 93 is 80 cents. Amoco 93 is 80 cents Kwik Trips is $1.20 for 92 or whatever they have and $1 for the 91.   I know that this is not exactly same as what you are saying with the premium to premium debate of those two stations but why is there such a difference. Top Tier this and that, it's all BS. All the fuel comes from the same damn refinery, so give me a break.

      Was all the way down to $3.69 a gallon but then jumped back to $3.99 just because for some reason.   Diesel floats between $4.80's to $5.10ish a gallon. I even saw Diesel #1 for $6.09 today but nobody in there right mind even buys that in the summer.

      Mine just keeps lagging or getting stuck on the reverse camera. When I turn off the truck, get out, and close the door it will still stay on. It’s very intermittent and I would not be able to duplicate the issue.

      I was checking out fuel prices at my farm fuel retailer at their pumps and yes the farm price is a bit lower than the non dyed fuel and was glad to see that the regular farm gas price has dropped a lot from what it had been but what blew me away was the price of diesel as the spread now compared to before the prices went up earlier in the year, diesel was actually slightly lower than gas which was a switch from the theme the last number of years. However that sure isn't the theme lately and definitely not right now. The prices I will post are not from that retailer but just looking at gasbuddy for the main city in this area and instead of posting the lowest price someone found I will list the higher price ( and that may not be the highest price, just whatever someone posted on gasbuddy ).   So regular gas and there are a lot of stations listing the same price for regular is 1.68 a liter, premium 2.00 a liter. Diesel 2.03 a liter for a top price I saw on diesel.   Figures out to 6.36 a us gallon Canadian funds for regular and 7.68 for diesel. With the US exchange rate it would be 4.58 us for regular and 5.53 for diesel.    Thought I would figure that out to get a picture of what it settles out like compared to various US prices and its about the same as the current price in Fairbanks AK as Anchorage tends to be lower. So yes, these would be the prices and higher along the way on the Alaska highway where they know they have a captured market !, for fuel prices for those beginning the long drive back to the lower 48   The problem is our Canadian dollar and going to the states that have the high prices, boy do we pay then !
