Is getting the rear cover gasket from the dealer the best option?

To clean the G80, brake cleaner?

No silicone, right?

The gasket is reusable if you carefully remove the cover. Brake cleaner works well along with a lint free cloth. Refill with Amsoil Severe Gear oil.

Thank you. So spray the inside of the diff, wipe inside and good to go?

Chlorinated or non? Does it matter?

Swapping out front to Amsoil too.

Thanks again.

I did my rear end, no G80 though. I bought a new gasket from group1autoparts.com However, as mentioned earlier, I realized I could have reused the casket. It's not the paper/cork jobs of previous years, its a reinforced rubber unit. Pretty beefy if you're careful. Careful reading of the service instructions indicate that the unit can be refilled to the bottom of the fill hole. As always, be sure to remove the fill plug before taking the cover off so you ensure the ability to refill the unit after draining it out.

Depends on the usage, but 50k miles if used hard, or if no towing 100k.

Thanks. I only tow twice a yeae., 60 km round trip. Will do.it at 75,000 miles.

Planned to change mine @ 70K mi.s since last done. Bought synthetic, gasket.

Checked oil. Pristine...could have put it back into bottles & sold as new.

I'll wait a while.

Skip the cleaner. Just drain and refill. This isn't a major contaminated area. All will be fine. You risk more by trying to clean it out and having a dry spot on the bearings and gear set when you go to move the vehicle. Best to leave it alone and have a fluid film on everything until the fresh gear oil can lubricate everything.

Yep I agree with Black02Silverado. Back in the day (and even today) some guys liked to run kerosene or diesel through the crankcase to "clean it out". No thanks! I've never done this to an engine, trans, or diff.

So, is that gasket reusable on the '07 new body G80?

I changed the oil at 40k by vacuuming it out of the fill hole 5 years ago. I didn't have a gasket on hand and didn't feel like running around trying to find one at the time. If I can reuse it, I'll be more inclined to change the oil when it's needed. I like pushing Amsoil to it's limits ...

The gasket is a metal lined rubber gasket that is reuseable. I am gonna pick one up though, it my only vehicle. Better safe than sorry.

I replaced fluid on my 2011 sierra 1500 wt 2 wheel drive at 120k mi for the first time.  I bought a new gasket and 3 bottles of AC-DELCO fluid from a dealership because I didn't know if after-market fluid works ok for my truck.  old fluid was totally black and burnt.  a shot glass full of metal powder was inside.  Gear surfaces looked all in good condition.  the truck has been a commuter vehicle with no towing or heavy load.  After the fluid change, I did a 500 mi long trip in one day with no issue.   I plan to do another fluid change at 180k mi or so.
