Bilsteins are on national back order right now. If you really want to upgrade shocks, go fox shocks.

Yup! better than stock, stiffer than stock, more controlled than stock, but by no means are they amazing. Same with rancho quicklifts. You get what you pay for. When you can buy 5100's for cheaper than the dealer sells the stock shocks for it really goes to show you what you're getting.

 

 

The best setup will be a coil over setup. I think so many people want 5100's cause it sounds and expensive to have "Bilstein" shocks.

I'm torn between something like that or the new 6112's. I really want whatevers going to ride nice and soft. The trd pro tacomas have a setup similar to 6112's and they're pretty bad ass. How many stock trucks are jumpable?

The part says its for the aluminum control arms; how am I to determine if mine has the steel or the aluminum? Do they come preloaded for 2" of lift?

Better than Bilstein 6112..... Debatable

I say coil over shocks are the way to go vs bilstein 5100 adjustable shocks.

 

Coil over shocks will absorb any bump better than just a piston style shock. Coil overs have piston and springs.

 

If you haven't lifted or leveled your truck, you wouldn't understand the difference in ride. Where the difference is very little, the stock shocks are junk.

 

Also, having shocks that lift your truck will keep a better angle on ball joints vs a level kit. Preventing premature wear on parts. ( debatable)

 

And if you have a aluminum control arm they will be silver, steel ones are black

I have leveled 2 of my previous trucks (2" RC on a 2008 silverado, and Bilsteins on a 2014 Ram) but so far haven't touched this one. I agree that the stock Ranchos aren't great. I was just worried that I'd be "overdoing" it by going to an expensive Fox Coil Over considering I almost never leave the pavement.

 

I'm very grateful for everyone that has chimed in on this thread and offered advice to me; it's truly been helpful. I have decided that I'll go with those Fox Coil Overs for the front to increase the height by 2", and some Fox's in the rear as well.

The reason I looked at Fox shocks was bc I have never heard anything bad about Fox. I'm sure there are some negative comments on Fox, but I haven't heard any

It's hard to over-do it with suspension components--there really are gains to be had with better stuff. Fox is good stuff, but for a pavement rig their strongest attributes are sort of going to go to waste. Another option that might suite you a bit better is ICON. I'd recommend this for you: http://performancetruckproducts.com/k73001-icon-2007-current-silverado-sierra-1500-suspension-system-stage-1 . You will not believe the ride and handling. If you went offroad more I'd recommend the extended travel coilovers combined with new upper arms (for either Fox or ICON) for more travel.

How is the stock setup or the bilstein setup different than a coilover? Aren't they all coilover configurations?

Im not exactly sure how they differ, but I know a coil over has the reservoir on the top. OEM setup has the reservoir on the bottom.

Definitely are, I guess I'm wrong, I could have sworn that they were the other way. Like Icon's.

They're all coilovers, just differing in details.

I supposed some brands choose to have them a different way.
