Please tell me how a MAF "will get more dirty" with a K&N versus an AC Delco filter???

 

I have used K&N for almost 25 years now, never with an issue. The MAF will not get dirty, sure if you over oil the filter to the extreme the MAF will get coated but a quick spray with MAF cleaner (which you should be doing every 10k miles so anyways) will take care of that issue pretty easily. Also the MAF goes thru a burn off cycle are every key off when it super heats to burn off road grime and oils/contaminants.

 

You will always have those that say that a K&N or any other filter wont filter out enough, please lets be honest. Even if anything as small as the microns that K&N or OEM filter lets into the intake track and makes it into the combustion chamber will be burned off once it is exposed to the 1500°+ combustion chamber temps. Filters were designed to keep dirt, sand and debris out of the engine, dust and small particulates are not going to harm the engine one bit.

I run paper filters. They filter better and I don't have to clean them. I never enjoyed having to clean my K&N's and find a suitable place for them sit and air dry before oiling them. I'd rather just toss a filter in the trash and save the time. I am using the stock intake box with an MIT and I doubt the filter is any appreciable restriction. So in my case there isn't any advantage to "upgrading" the filter. I've see used oil analysis on engines with air intake leak and wear particles do go up-yes that's extreme compared to K&N versus paper, but I'm keeping this truck a long time.

I have dyno'd several "cold air intakes" and K&N is far from a CAI unless you are running down the highway or on a Dyno with the hood up. You ever tried driving around town with your hood up. Anybody that actually tunes for street ability knows what I'm talking about and what kind of IAT's you get from these so called CAI's.

I used to run K&N air filters. I drive the back roads with a lot of dust in hunting seasons. I noted that there was dust in the intake tube and box, downstream from the filter. I changed to ACD filters after having run a lot of years on K&N. I will say, I never had an engine problem I could attribute to the K&N. I took them out and tossed them when they got really dirty and replaced with new. I never liked the idea of cleaning a filter ... how to clean, am I pushing dirt thru from the dirty side to the clean side, how much oil, forget it. How much value is a few hp vs. screwing with a bunch of dirty crap? A filter is supposed to filter. I expect any filter will cost a few hp vs no filter.

Agreed.

 

IMO, the factory airbox and intake duct is a good Cold Air Intake (CAI). Is there room for improvement? Sure. But for a stock engine, the gains are small.

Uh yea for street ability. I owned a 13 370z with takeda short rams and a custom x pipe dual exhaust running 13.3 quarter miles with it. Did the cold airs help. Not really but they didnt hurt either. My times were consistent with either set up. I got them mostly for asthetic reasons and to free up space. That big black humongous box in our engine bays are hideous and yep I will be putting a K&N in mine soon.

Intakes themselves are a whole other story... Most draw hotter air than the stock box. Which is why so many keep the stock box and use the MIT tube. The stock box draws really well. BlackBear got very good results with it and I really like mine, it definitely does clear up space.

 

I do wish there was more testing done on reusable oil free filters like the one I use, but I'm pretty confident it cleans well.
