How long do original brake pads & rotors normally last on a Sierra

I'm still a newbie to this group, so please bear with me on this topic. I purchased a 2011 GMC Sierra Denali last August 15th. It was considered a GM Certified Pre-Owned with 37,500 miles on it. It was and still is in mint condition. Back in the end of March, I noticed the brakes were starting to give the feeling like they needed to be recut. It wasn't very slightly noticeable...so I waited until May for when it was do for inspection. I asked them to check out the rotors and pads. The dealer said it passed fine but will need to be taken care of by the end of he summer. By this point, I only put about 6,000 miles on it from August to May. Well, the brakes started getting worse by mid June. I took it back to the dealership and they said the pads & rotors need to be replaced all around. I was quite pissed. They said they were the originals all around as well.

 

So the question is, how long does original brake pads and rotors last with "normal" driving? The dealership's used car manager was driving the truck for about 2 years and said he put about 15,000 miles on it during that time frame and it had one original owner that only drove the truck around town. Is it normal to have to replace the original brake pads and rotors at 43,000 mile mark?

Depends on driver. I bought a new 2007 silverado Z71 and put 110,000 miles on it before trading it off. It had original brakes and they still worked/felt fine.

I agree that the driver does play a significant role in the wear of the brakes. I did more digging into this while I was on the phone with GM Corporate. I looked deeper into the paperwork I have and the dealership received the truck back in the end of October 2012 with 16,077 miles and the certification for the "certified pre-owned" was done on April 21, 2014 with a mileage of 37,930 and they did a PA inspection sticker of May. The actual mileage I purchased it was 37,995. So they drove 21,853 in the matter of 18 months or so. The certification states the front pads were 6mm and the rear were 12mm. From the time I purchased it till March of this year when we first noticed the brakes starting to act up, we put roughly 4,000 miles. When we took it in for inspection towards the middle of May was 5,500 or so and they passed the truck for inspection! Unfortunately, I don't have written documentation of what the millimeters were on the pads at that time. I just don't understand how they could've passed the truck for inspection, especially when we asked them to look into the brakes! Soon there after, the brakes got to the point where we needed to get them done! I don't understand how original brakes can only last 44,000 miles or so!

Passed the truck for which inspection, the Certified Used inspection process or the PA state vehicle inspection?

 

The minimum limit for pad thickness on Certified Used is 5mm for the front and 3mm for the rear. Looks like they just skirted by on the tires though, as the minimum is 5/32 of tread.

 

PA vehicle inspection regulations state that pads or shoes can not be making metal to metal contact.

 

When they did the brake inspection for you what was the pad thickness at the time?

The pic above was of the "172 point inspection" for the "certified pre-owned" classification back in April of last year. I believe they did the PA state inspection at that same time, since that was the month sticker on it when we purchased it. I looked through my documents/bill/receipt for the inspection they (O'Neil Buick GMC in Warminster, PA) did this past May and it did not have the breakdown of the pads or what the rotors looked like. I will be contacting them on Monday to get this information. The mechanic had to of written it down somewhere!

On my 2009 Silverado, I did the rotors and pads at 70000 miles and there was still lots of material left. Enough that I actually was able to sell them.

Just get the brakes replaced and move on. You have know idea how the truck was mistreated before you purchased. It could have been towing a 10,000# boat everyday for all you know. Or the diver could have been driving it like he stole it. Pedal to the metal stop and starts

Got word the dealership is picking up the tab to replace the rear pads n rotors since they realized they should've done a better job at handling the entire brake problem from the beginning!

    • No such thing as regenerative braking on a pure ICE vehicle.     Regenerative braking is the re-capture of energy from electric motors and stores it in the battery pack.  So hybrids, PHEV and EVs have regenerative braking.     What you are seeing is the charging system changing modes is all.  Its likely entering charge mode for some sort of reason is all.  All of the charging modes will be listed below.   As for L10 vs D.  L10 turns off automatic grade braking.  L10 puts you in control of grade downshifts where in D it will automatically do it based on brake pedal position and other factors.  Otherwise L10 and D drive exactly the same aside from that one aspect.    Battery Sulfation Mode The BCM will enter this mode when the interpreted Generator output voltage is less than 13.2 V for 45 minutes. When this condition exists the BCM will enter Charge Mode for 2–3 minutes. The BCM will then determine which mode to enter depending on voltage requirements.   Charge Mode The BCM will enter Charge Mode when ever one of the following conditions are met:   Windshield wipers are ON for more than 3 s. Climate Control Voltage Boost Mode Request is true, as sensed by the HVAC control module via serial data. High speed cooling fan, rear defogger, and HVAC high speed blower operation can cause the BCM to enter the Charge Mode. The estimated battery temperature is less than 0°C (32°F). Battery State of Charge is less than 80%. Vehicle speed is greater than 145 km/h (90 mph) A current sensor malfunction exists. System voltage is determined to be below 12.56 V When any one of these conditions is met, the system will set targeted generator output voltage to a charging voltage between 13.9–15.5 V, depending on the battery state of charge and estimated battery temperature.   Fuel Economy Mode The BCM will enter Fuel Economy Mode when the estimated battery temperature is at least 0°C (32°F) but less than or equal to 80°C (176°F), the calculated battery current is less than 15 A and greater than −8 A, and the battery state-of-charge is greater than or equal to 80%. Its targeted generator output voltage is the open circuit voltage of the battery and can be between 12.5–13.1 V. When fuel economy mode is active, the generator is not charging, only maintaining open circuit battery voltage. The BCM will exit this mode and enter Charge Mode when any of the conditions described above are present.   Headlamp Mode The BCM will enter Headlamp Mode when ever the head lamps are ON (high or low beams). Voltage will be regulated between 13.9–14.5 V.   Start Up Mode When the engine is started the BCM sets a targeted generator output voltage of 14.5 V for 30 s.   Tow/Haul Mode (if applicable) Pressing the Tow/Haul Mode button located on the center stack, the vehicle system voltage is raised and the remote (non-vehicle) battery will be charged. Having the headlamps on will raise the system voltage and if the Tow/Haul button is applied it will not serve any purpose. The voltage is regulated between 13.9-14.5 V.      
    • Hello from Australia Just sharing that there is now a way to delete the active shutters entirely with just a plug in module. Opens up tons of room to light bars etc.
    • I have an observation and a question... 1) I watch the voltage closely because I have had to dial in the cut-in/cut-out voltages of the battery separator to my camper.  The "smart" charging drives me nuts.  Anyway, I noticed that when coasting for a while, and especially if lightly using the brakes (though not necessary), the voltage goes up from mid/high-13 volts to mid/high-14 volts.  Then it drops back down after stopping or going again.  Consistently!   The only explanation I can come up with is REGENERATIVE BRAKING!  Well, maybe that's a little bit of an exaggeration, but it's certainly free extra battery charging.   2) Driving on mountain roads I will use L and vary the max gear.  Things straighten out and I end up in L10.  Sometimes I leave it there for a while.  Is there any difference between L10 and D?   
    • Do you think this width might affect the chalk test with a higher pressure closer to 65psi? I think lowering the pressure makes sense to get the tread to lay flatter
