Trading Sierra for Silvy -> What will I be missing?

I have a 2015 Sierra SLE Double Cab that I'm going to trade for a 2015 Silverado Crew Cab. The Sierra has a few things that the Silvy doesn't, but I'm wondering if I'm maybe losing more than I realize in the trade for features.

Both are set up with the same 8" display, Nav, Sirius, rear camera, tow package, 4x4, 3.42 rear end, G80 locker, 40/20/40 front bench with storage and driver's power adjust, heated seats, 5.3L, climate control, homelink, heated mirrors, and tilt wheel.

The Silverado also has leather interior, telescoping wheel, power adjust pedals, and power rear slider (I actually prefer the full window, but it's part of an option package). I know that I'm going to lose the soft-touch dash, the aluminum trim will be replaced with silver-coated plastic, no integrated brake controller (don't care), and there's no Hill Descent Control (only on the Z71, this is a 1LT).

What else am I giving up by swapping to the Chevy from the GMC? What, besides healights that will allow me to see at night, will I be gaining?

You'll gain a lot of comfort for rear seat passengers going to the Crew Cab and a more soothing blue tint lighting in the dash rather than the red of the GMC. It's a personal preference for me but I don't like the red dash lights, your tastes may be different.

My opinion,

When you pull up to a stop sign, and three other silverado's pull up around you, than your boss pulls up next to you in a GMC, you'll know what you miss.

However, I love my crew cab, sure you will too

(I just got done driving through nowhere with my GMC and thought the headlights were fine. Better than my previous vehicle. I have read and read how terrible they are, and simply disagree)

It will be nice for you to actually see the road at night. That's the main benefit, and the extra room afforded by the crew.

Sounds like a nice upgrade in features to the Silverado. Yes, GM cranks out more Silverados than Sierras, so you will have the more common truck on the road. I think each has it's pluses and minuses for styling. You can't go wrong with either.

If you are not in a rush, you could wait for a 2016 Silverado / Sierra, or someone may trade in a nice 2014 / 2015 GMC for the updated styling of the 2016.

I had my headlights upgraded at the dealer they are kick @ss now.... Besides the things you mentioned, chrome door trim and that's about it on a 2015, the 14's didn't have color matched handles or mirror caps. Honestly I've got three friends with LT sliverado's and I dunno if it's mostly the stitching on the dash and the real metal trim but, the GMC just feels much more premium to me. W/ that said I'd not object to driving a chevy they're good trucks.

Like you said - dash color is a personal preference. The blue/gray scheme in the Chevy is generally "the same" as the more red theme in the GMC. I will say that the DIC menu items are easier to identify as which one is selected in the GMC. It's more difficult to tell which item is selected in the Chevy.

I much prefer the front-end styling of the GMC, but the lights are poor. And mine have been updated! I live "in the woods", have no street lights, and can't see squat off to the sides of the road at night.

The truck is 6 months old to me. Only reason I can pull this off is because of current incentives. Waiting isn't an option.

Yes, the updates make the lights better. They still suck, though.

Actually I don't see any problem with my Headlights either.

(thinking... hmmm...) pretty much the same truck.

what I do like better on the GMC is the plastic trim around the wheel wells.

You will be able to see better for two reasons. 1, better headlights. 2, you won't have your nose up in the air thinking you are better than someone driving a Chevy. :chevy: Same truck under the skin. Plus you'll get a few more unusable my link themes. Unless you happen to be a 14 year old gaming addict.

LOL! Not around where I live. GMC's are a dime a dozen, I am the odd man out in my Silverado. I bet I see 15 to 1 Sierras vs Silverados around here. Love them both, my next one will likely be a GMC just to change it up a little but I do love my Silverado.

there is a grade control braking on the silverado and the trailer package has hill desent I have 1LT and it has both. Really I just like the bowtie better "real men wear bowties" lol. I have a 1LT and I love it, I was going to buy the 2LT but I couldnt get the exact package I wanted and took the 1LT with everything I wanted outside of the black grill insert which I fixed very quickly thanks to a member of this forum. You will be happy and the front of your truck will look awesome cause bowties are awesome lol

Hmmm, my 2015 25HD Sierra has headlights that work pretty much as good as my former 2011 25 HD Sierra - I'm not understanding this head light issue. Please fill me in ...

I have seen complaints of weak headlights claiming sub par performance from the lights. Cant see any issue myself.

    • I tried tapping it.  This might sound like a dumb question, you should feel vibration or some type of noise when it turns on? Can someone please verify? Thank you all!
    • I feel better now for my own view point and actions or lack there of towards the dealership service theme reading your post and others. GM corporate is who offers the two free oil changes on the HD trucks and I bought my truck in Feb of 2025 and those oil change offers run out within 2 years I believe and I highly doubt I will be using either one of them. I had asked if I could officially give those free services to another customer ( a friend ) and they said no, its all a GM corporate thing based on the vehicle in question. What that service advisor did however was go into a little story about how such and such customer was denied engine warranty because he had done his own oil changes because then they are not documented ... you see where that goes and so an employee playing the game of scaring the customer into having the service work done there most certainly triggered my thought process. At a later date I did talk to the person who handles warranty claims at the dealership and she said to be sure to document the oil changes and keep receipts for the oil and filter ( coped the receipts from cases of Mobil oil and case of filters I bought from them ) and the vehicles VIN, the date of service, mileage etc and staple that together as a record I would give them if that was ever needed and I keep my own log book for services for each vehicle as well. Oh and about 8 months after I bought the truck the dealer starts calling me to offer a maintenance service since they haven't seen my vehicle show up on their system ... for the mere fee of 300.00 Canadian to change the oil and rotate the tires and a few other minor checks and I declined the offer, I get the call again a couple of months later for the same thing and she could tell I was not interested and she asked if they should take my name off the call list and I said yes, do that !.    By the way did you happen to keep your factory oil filter to open it up and see the surprises inside as I expect some will show up as per the odd little sliver of metal shaving and particles that the filter does trap along with bits of grey silicone sealer that come off of the inside edge of mating surfaces. I have cut open every filter so far on my truck although few miles but have changed the oil often and the second filter was vastly better with very little of anything, that first filter was the unsettling one as I expected it would be.
    • I get why they do this…but man…not ideal. I only extract on inboard boat engines because the drains are buried and even then I hate it because it’s easy to leave a quart behind with that method.   They should market it as an “oil refresh” not oil change!
    • I only get oil changed where I can watch. Valvoline pulls through the dipstick into a see thru glass. When done they show me the dipstick. About the only way they can mess up is using the wrong oil. But that secret wouldn’t stay secret long. Honda uses TQ wrenches on everything. You can watch through a plate glass window. Discount tires does that with tires. Trust but verify.
    • I would not argue that with you. It would be pointless to argue against the truth and you speak the truth.    My question and in fact the entire point of this thread is an exploration into the levers of wear which happens no matter how well we maintain our powertrains.    Some of these levers we exert a good deal of influence over which can and do result is lower wear, longer powertrain life. Some others we are sort of stuck with.    An engine is typically done when the ring to bore seal no longer is able to do the job effectively. Normally the first thing to go in a engine otherwise well maintained and adult driven is this seal.    Looking into the means, methods, products and attitudes that influence the rate of wear seems a worthwhile inquiry to me.
