Discussing the capless fill cap on the '17s & a friend pointed out that the F150s had them too. Any idea how this set up works? Seems a bit counterproductive when the EPA/CARB is on the war path about hydrocarbons evaporating into the atmosphere. (I'm surprised I haven't seen the gas nozzles that cover the filler opening during my US travels).

 

Also, why would the diesels not have the same filler?

EPA loves this setup, less possibility of user error leaving the cap off. It's kinda nice in my opinion.

 

I think it's a cost thing mainly, I've seen some cars have them then lose them the next model year.

I would be very worried about dirt getting into the tank with this system. How does it keep dust and even dirt out? Could someone who knows please explain it to me?

side note - GM offers a special funnel to buy if you want to add things like stabil ...

GM claims it prevents someone from siphoning gas out (Hmmmm....)

 

seems the gas door keeps dust & dirt away from the filler neck / tube (?)

I'm w/ you on this 1. I can't see how a spring load ball can produce a better seal than a cap that you screw on. There is a small "funnel" in the glove box should you have to fill w/ a 5 gallon can.

I had a locking gas cap for my 2016 before the truck came in and it works great and throws no code. It is yellow and has the Flex fuel E85 label on it. Most of the gas engine Fords had the capless system when I was selling them in 2010. As was stated before, pushing in the nozzle unseals a spring loaded cap so it meets emission standards. Ford sold a locking plug for people that wanted a locking system. i always thought it was odd that most of the Japanese brands have had inside release fuel doors for the past 30 years and most of the US brands still have the non locking door. Most of the people that traded Vehicles in that had the inside locked fuel door wanted a locking system. The locking fuel doors can be popped open with a screwdriver but it does add another level of security and people worry about vandalism as much as gas theft. We have all heard about vandals putting a raw egg or sugar in tanks and at least with some type of locking cap you might see the damage and deal with it sooner.

I have always had locking gas caps on my Ford and Chevy trucks and I always will. My cars have all been Toyotas, Hondas, or now my 15 Mazda 3 and they all had the inside fuel door release, even back in 1986.

I should add I am not a fan of the capless system and am really glad my 2016 has the conventional screw on cap. Most vehicles have the cap tethered to the vehicle but leaving gas caps off or not tightening them properly was the reason we were told that Ford went to this system. Too bad GMC decided to follow suit.

So glad I live rural where using or needing a locking cap doesn't come to mind. I don't even lock my vehicles at home. From my Caddy to my Silverado to my semi truck. Folks in cubicles dream up a lot of stuff to put on vehicles nowadays so that when it is time to look for another one, I cringe at the thought.

I never worry about my truck sitting in my carport. I do travel and park in areas that do not feel as safe as where I live.

Well , Stant seems to make good stuff, my cap works great. Hopefully this new system will be a winner. Hard to believe it can be cost effective.

I could cotton to something like a spring loaded cap that you lift to insert the nozzle, then when you are done and pull the nozzle out the cap is spring closed back OVER the neck. I have seen similar setups in the past. Now that would make sense to make sure caps are not left off. Some stupid push in ball thing is pretty lame in concept as well as design.

I think that FMVSS has req'd a "ping pong" ball downstream of the filler hose opening. The thinking behind this is that if a vehicle overturns the ball drops towards the "opening" due to gravity, sealing the filler neck.

All this protecting us from ourselves. Next they will want self sealing fuel tanks like in military aircraft.
