Now that makes sense, in a hurry downshift scenario, step saver. Or you need to slow fast without attention of brake lights such as slipping through Barney Fife's speed trap. (I don't speed anymore)

When you shift to M1 as you use the tap shifter to go up the numbers will change to M2, M3, M4 it just shows which M gear you are in. Give it a try next time you are in the truck. :jester:

I gave it a shot this weekend while traveling and threw the shifter into 1...... worked as described, only downshifting enough to hold speed on grade. Learned something new, cool!

Anyone know of a way to turn on the Gear Shift Numbers to display all the time? The numbers that display next to the 'L' when in manual mode.Would be nice to know what gear your in when trans cant make up its mind.

hey guys ... i'm gonna go try this same test with my th350.  wish me luck!

Not sure about your TH350 but years ago my brother had a TH400 he had built behind a 454 BB that I saw and felt go into 1st from as high as 75 MPH!!!  I'm sure that if it had been a stock motor it would not have done it very often but this truck at idle sounded like it would be lucky to get to the next stop light!!!  That thing would run like crazy, I've still got the old truck but it broke a valve spring 15 years ago and my brother never fixed it, he was always going to do that next (spring/fall you pick) and never got the chance.  :jester:

Manual mode number is 'maximum permitted', which may or may not be the current gear.

A driving situation that results in transmission shifting to much is one of the times it might be a good time to engage T/H mode.

with a 3.08 axle and a 32 inch tire that is about 6000 rpm.  that ‘s not too crazy, really - not a great idea, but i am not too surprised that it lived!

yeh, been using the T/H button alot, hit it going up hill before the Trans downshifts itself. Seems to make a smoother less fierce downshift, not sure but trans down shifting on its own, maybe 2 gears?? when I use the T/H button is 1 down shift, I could be wrong, thats why be nice to have the gears display on DIC somewhere. If I shift to 'L' manual mode it drops 2 gears I think, then I have to counter with an up shift. Too many buttons, shifts, prefer the old shift lever D321 style, D54321 would be far better than all that lever and button pushing. Some thing dont need 'improving'. Its fun, cool to button push everything but ......a single one handed motion, one gear at a time.

In the OM there is a chart (page 260 in the 2018 sierra manual) showing what gear they will shift to when moved into manual mode.

The gear it shifts to (and the number that it drops) depends on the current gear, whether it is in T/H and what transmission it is.

Example:

6 speed if in either 6th goes to 4th,  (2 gear drop); in 5th it will also go to 4th - (a one gear drop)

In some of the lower gears, it will not drop at all when switched to manual mode.

yep, learned that on the ice few week ago. I was moving along and wanted to start slowing down with out using the brakes so I instinctively dropped shifter down and immediatlly started sliding sideways, shoved it back up to D and skated around some till straightened out. not sure what gear was in (!no gear display on DIC!}

In my experience of 35 + years of driving, the best way to slow down is in a controlled manner.

Meaning, that it is not a good idea to have the tranny decide which gear you want to be in. In slick conditions I choose the manual mode from the beginning and work my way through the gears.

My drive way is steep and when I leave in the morning, I select 4HI and put the tranny in "N" to make sure that the rear wheels don't "overrride" the braking or steering force of the front wheels.

While I'm driving, I use to keep the tranny a gear lower than what it would be in under normal conditions. Basically the same principal as choosing the same gear going downhill as you'd need to get up the same hill. Truckers will understand what I'm trying to say.

When I put my tranny into manual mode, it'll stay in the same gear I'm in at the moment. I don't know about HD trucks (although our company F350 and 3500HD do the same).

If I was in a situation that I'm too fast for the conditions, I feel more confident to use the brakes instead of an automatic tranny to slow down, because I can control the force applied to the wheels.

It's a different story with a manual transmission. With a manual transmission I can "play" the clutch.

In the 3 speed auto days you could pull into 2 at any speed. Depending on gearing you could do 60 in first 100 in second. Some of my impalas had 273 gears. I haven’t met a transmission that would let you go to first at any speed. I wouldn’t do it on wet roads or ice. As far as GMs showing the gear. I know our Ford service truck does. They just added a GM service truck I’ll have to check it out to see.

I was curious about this myself.
