No sunroof option for double cabs

Why can't a sunroof be ordered in a double cab truck?

My 2015 SLT has every option but the sliding rear window and the sunroof. When I asked about finding a truck with a sunroof, they told me no double cabs came with sunroofs, and I would have to step up to a crew cab to get one.

Found a local shop that comes highly praised, says they can install an after market Webasto sunroof in the truck, make it look factory, for $1,200. Worth it?

I'm sure it a size issue. Mine has the factory sunroof and it's quite large. When opened, it looks like it comes within a few inches of the rear of the crew cab.

I was told there is not enough roof area / ceiling area for the factory sun roof kit to fit in the Double Cab. Kinda glad they can't. When I was looking at LTZ optionedtrucks, the dealer didn't have any Crew Cab LTZ optioned trucks without sun roof. This became a primary reason to buy the DC. I will NOT buy a truck with a sun roof in it.

Pretty sure when they were a factory option they opened above the roof and not in the roof because of that too

Because of the Texas heat, or another reason?

You would think I wouldn't want a sunroof in my truck, since it is in right now for a water leak repair. I had sunroofs previously and I kind of miss it in the summer time.

Personally, I would never use it. And yes, I am concerned about it leaking. I've had several cars and a couple of SUVs that had it and never used it. I tend to use auto A/C and not run with the windows down. I also tried to find a truck without the rear slider too. I've used it once in two years. I'd rather have the plain glass. For a while the rear slider was restricted because they would fail in the open position and had to recall them. Really? Failed in the open position? And I was surprised at how many on the forum were upset that they couldn't get the slider. Some said they wouldn't buy it without one. I almost didn't buy with it. Anyway, I think you get the point. It's just personal preference. IMO, both of these are a waste of money. Each to their own...

At first I thought I really wanted a sliding rear window in my truck, but now that I don't have it, I actually think it looks cleaner/nicer with just one piece of tinted glass for a back window.

I HAD to have a sunroof so it took some looking to find a crew setup the way I wanted with the sunroof.

My last truck had it and I really liked driving around with it open.

To the OP, why not just get a crew? You can get a 6.5 foot bed just like the double cabs.

Oh and I like the power rear slider. My last truck had a manual one and I rarely opened it; since this one can be controlled up front I open it all the time too.

Check around to see who the dealers in town use. They send them off fairly often for leather or sunroofs. dealer seems to be correct as you cannot build a DC with sunroof.

Might check to see if it is a constraint issue or law of the land. Ask installing company why no factory. Maybe something in the '16 roof that you really do not want to cut or cannot cut???? Same size sunroof?

If you can change your mind about a slider, it does allow the cab to vent and would help a non-sunroof cab for such. Good luck and let us know how it goes.

Also, if you do decide to install one, check the company out well and get so customer/dealer feed back on them.

Too late, already purchased my new truck about 2 months ago.

I went with the double cab because me and the fiance have no kids, 98% of the time I am by myself, and I like the look a lot better. Although recently I have tried to fit some stuff in the backseat that I didn't want to get wet, and the boxes were too big. It was a real PIA actually. That part made me wish I would have purchased a crew cab, but oh well.

Another big factor in the DC was it had all the really important options I couldn't find in a crew cab in my area. Most importantly, max tow package for those 3:73's, and the full load tow mirrors, including the power fold option. Now that I have had 3:73's and the completely optioned out mirrors, I could never go back to anything else in those departments.

I don't think I will get a sunroof added because no matter how reputable the shop, they are still cutting a hole in the roof, adding drain tubes, gaskets, altering the head liner. One little thing done wrong and it could haunt me for years. I asked the guy at the shop if they just install a new headliner directly from GM meant for a truck with a sunroof. He said yes. I said um, I just told you GM does not offer DC trucks with sunroofs, so there would be no GM headliner to purchase. I got the dumb founded silence and the "oh...well don't worry we can restitch it to make it look factory" Maybe they can, but I can't take the gamble.

Funny enough, the salesman at my dealership said I got such a good price on my 2015 (I know the sales manager) that he was pretty sure they would pay out the loan 100% and take my 2015 back on trade if I wanted to get into a crew cab. Trouble is, all the crew cabs left in my area are pretty plain. Cloth seats, no sunroofs or sliding rear windows, no bed liners, 3:08 ratios, no center consoles. I couldn't justify gaining a little cab space I would rarely use, to give up options I enjoy daily in my smaller DC.

Opinion do vary, I am not arguing with anyone who buys a sunroof. Mine was on the lot with a sunroof, I consider a sunroof a complete waste of money. Yes, I wasted money. If I was spec'ing a truck I would not get a sunroof. But I am not trying to convince anyone else, get what you want. Get dice hanging from your mirror if that is your thing. Life is short.

One thing of note on my CC with a sunroof. The headliner/ rear seat roof height is about 4 inches higher for the rear seat passengers than the front. So where the internal guts for the sunroof end they raised the rear seat headroom. Maybe they need this and with a DC it is not possible?

Good info to know.

Just how far back does a CC sunroof go? I saw a Ford crew cab the other day with what looked like a 3 ft long sunroof, that would be awesome for passengers.

    • You can install tailpipes that direct the exhaust sideways vs the OEM one that goes straight back. There are several on the market, do you own research. HOWEVER, you need to make sure the Venturi vents are still intact, otherwise it will throw a engine code. There is a sensor somewhere that detects back pressure on the exhaust. And if it doesn't collect the correct metrics, it will throw the truck into limp mode.
    • "Teardown" is complete. Head surfaces are clean and ready, new intake is prepped and ready. Coolant drained and water pump is removed, radiator is removed, new hoses and pump are ready.   The replacement intake is also from a '95 (with I think 260k, the odometer said). Noticeably less pitting where it covers the rear coolant passages. I'm not sure if that's a tribute to more frequent use, more frequent coolant changes/upkeep, or if the intake was machined at some point. But it appears I found a good one.   My coolant hoses were original, and the lower hose still retained the factory spring inside. It's not really rusty, but it's got deposits all over it. Unsure if I should re-install it (will thoroughly clean it first). Someone said hose technology has gotten better since 1995 (has it?) and I don't need the spring. I think modern EPDM is what made those hoses last from 1995-2026, so it's a question of how much suction can the water pump really pull, and will it collapse the hose without a spring?   I'm stopped and waiting for parts, however.   When I first brought the truck home, the fan was intermittently hitting the radiator shroud. I could see someone had monkeyed with the shroud (put a bunch of cardboard as a spacer between the upper/lower shroud halves. Someone said the motor mounts have likely failed and the engine has sagged. I wasn't sure I believed that. The engine is really solid in its mounts: To remove the old intake I *just* nearly permanently welded to the heads with freshly cured RTV and gasket snot two weeks ago, I literally had to use the arms on my lift and a chain with a bolt attached to the intake to pull it loose. It almost picked the front of the truck off the ground before ....scuuuuuuuuuuup.... I could actually hear the gaskets tearing and it broke loose and the whole truck settled back down. Motor barely moved.   SO, those parts I'm waiting on... The lower radiator mounts/bushings had completely failed. The radiator needs to be insulated from the rad support, and the bushings help the rad stand at the correct height. The plastic "baffle" was also destroyed at some point. Someone had attached the shroud to it incorrectly, overlapping a joint that should have been underlapped, creating another suspect issue potentially causing things to hit the fan. Broken tabs, side is busted off, and it's perma-formed/bent where it was jimmied incorrectly.   The baffle? Unobtainum. Long since discontinued from GM, of course. Aftermarket/capa/chinese? Also unobtanium. In GM's infinite wisdom, it appears there are at least two different variations whether the Blazer is 2 or 4 door, and I can't yet tell if they shared the same part with the S-pickups. Plan B, if I can't find a viable used one, will be to create a bracket to re-assemble the critical joint I need to seal a gap with the shroud. But that will bug me, it won't be...perfect.   The water pump bolts appear to have been installed with...plumber's putty. I guess, sure, if it works...? I've found a few "backyard fixes" like that. Someone's been here before....   If I can't find someone to jam bamboo under my fingernails to fill my free time this week I think I'll install the driver's power window motor and replace the rear door speaker that's inop. I've got a genuine GM "9.5" ohm working replacement. Why GM used a non-standard resistance....nevermind. Of course they did, you can get more sound from a cheap factory amp that way.   And the saga goes on...
    • // Thank you, also for your  response. More information is always good. This 2013 GMC is most likely my 'forever truck"-I'm 77 and retired...and truck only has 42K on it-very clean-so I try to keep it that way.  Tks again for your  response- glenn
    • I started my install this weekend. Everything was pretty straight forward but I ran into one issue with running power through the firewall. The nipple grommet on my High Country already has a small harness running through it - has anyone else ran into this issue? And on the engine bay side, does the wire basically just penetrate the factory wiring boot? I did this on my '22 Trail Boss and it seems much easier but thats been a few years. My other thought would be possibly drilling a new hole adding a rubber grommet just to the lower left of the factory hole. Thoughts?   Has anyone used a T-harness off the Bose amp and obtained power from there? It seems a little odd that such a small amp needs 3 power leads
