What should happen from damage during service?

Right after Christmas I had my truck in service for new leaf springs to be put on. When I picked up my truck (in Texas) I was leaving back to my duty station (Georgia) the next day. The service advisor told me and showed me some dents and said they were done while it was getting fixed. Knowing I was leaving the next day, he told me to get the damages fixed and "send us the bill." The dent on the rear fender is hardly noticeable. The dent, more like crease, on the front door is too deep for PDR, and the dents on the front fender are noticeable and probably able to be popped out. Two body shops gave me an estimate of just over $2150 and a ten day repair. The service manager said he will get back to me soon and try to get a check sent out to me. Should they pay for a rental car for that period? And do or should I get anything out of it besides a "sorry" and painted side of my truck? What would y'all do or suggest to do?!

Repair and a rental is the least they should do. It wouldn't hurt if they'd give you something like a gift certificate to the GM Accessory store as compensation for damaging your truck and your inconvenience of dealing with repairs. But as BootyHunter says, at least they took responsibility.

I just got and used a $500 GM gift certificate for the problem they repaired. Nothing else from there I want. But I think they should do something more. You don't just damage a vehicle, have it repainted and say sorry. F that

You did get more then just "sorry" - you got a $500 gift certificate. If you don't want it - sell it for $400 or $450 and pocket the cash.

This is from a dealer that you may never do business with again. Kudos to them for stepping up, taking responsibility for their actions, and giving you $500 on top of it.

And no - not out of line to ask for a rental either. Just be happy the whole thing (so far) has been relativity hassle free.

I'd be really pissed. I'd want a new truck, repairs are never the same as original paint work but, I know that's unreasonable... I'd try to pursue a diminished value claim unless you're leasing the truck.

No no no. GM gave me the $500 for dealing with another dealership not replacing squeaky springs and other issues. This dealership just replaced a bad headliner that they put on when I bought the truck. And damaged my truck.

I would get them to throw in some free oil changes as well if they want to keep your business. I feel bad for you but unfortunately accidents happen and they seem to be trying to take care of you. From the stories from others around here there are many dealers that might not have handled it as well.

The Dealer should fix your truck and pay for a loaner while it is being fixed. If its fender bender type damage take it to a quality body shop. If small dents are properly repaired I wouldn't see any diminished value. I don't think the Dealer owes you anything more than that. If you damaged someones door in a parking lot and you paid for the damage to the car already how much would you compensate the owner of the other car?

If I'm reading this right you bought the truck in Texas and live in Georgia? So the dealer is not local, me personally, I would contact my insurance, give them the details and the dealer in Texas' info and let them sort it out for you. When your truck goes in for repair, your insurance should work out the rental car issue and pass the bill to the dealer and Bill their insurance. Sounds like the dealer is working with you, but since you're not local to them I can see this becoming a PITA and the dealer reneging or stalling getting you money to pay for repairs.

There will not be any "diminished value" as this is not going thru insurance so there will be nothing on the VIN. As long as the repair is done correctly, paint is matched properly no one should be able to tell the car was repaired.

All true. as long as i can't tell anything ever happened i will be happy. and oh course a rental vehicle during the repair period. Thanks all!
