I just joined because I am in need of some advice from the group. I have never owned a truck but have always wanted one. It is time for me to buy a slightly used pickup and I really like the looks of the 2014+ silverado. With that said I have always been told not to buy a first model year of anything and I wanted to know if there was any reason I should avoid 2014 or 2015. Is there anything I should know before buying? Recently I have had some really bad trouble with my Honda with variable cylinder management (shutting off cylinders) I swore I would never get another car that tried to shut off cylinders. Any trouble? I just dont want to buy another car/truck that has major issues. Any advice on what to avoid and or what to watch for by year and what not would be a big help.

I agree. I had a friend get rid of a 14 and the dealer gave them a 15. Seats tearing ( cloth) , engine and rearend problems. I love my 15 minus the damn tranny not knowing how to do its damn job

OK, let's get something clear - NOT all 2014s are bad, and we all know that!!! While the problems are real and do exist, they get slightly overblown on this wonderful thing called the interweb.

If you are looking at a 2014, be sure to test drive, especially on the highway at speeds above 65mph and check for the vibration issue as this is the one issue that can be a problem is seems to be incurable.

And FWIW, I had a '14 and it was a great truck! I only got rid of it because I tow and needed more payload.

Southpaw is spot on, our '14 has not had a lick of trouble. Forums blow everything out of proportion, the actual amount is quite small. Test drive it, being used a nice test drive you can find any of the sort of common problems or anything else that might concern you. Not much changed from the 14 to 15 trucks so both have had issues and most haven't. Good luck, I prefer the 14-15 to 16 myself for the Chevy, GMC both are about the same style wise.

What Southpaw said... 24K miles on my 14 and it has yet to go to the dealer. There tends to be quite a few sissy complaints on this forum and they all don't have issues. It's inevitable to eventually run in to a problem or two on anything but don't go in to negatively. Test drive the vehicle, pull records or car fax, inspect everything thoroughly, determine price willing to pay, buy, enjoy.

The reason I bought my 15 was because I knew quite a few people that had the 14 and loved them!

The Internet is a powerful tool, and the trolls certainly know how to use it!

14 and a 15 here with no issues. Just make sure to do a lengthy test drive with a lot of variables.

Last February, I was at my local dealer and they offered me a new 2014 LT crew cab 4x4 for $12K off sticker. The sticker was $45K so the sale price would have been $33K plus TTL. I usually respect the value of a 2-3 year old car because you don't have to take the initial depreciation hit but the big discounts on the full size trucks change the math so I personally think you have to be a little careful in evaluating the value of a used 2014.

I just looked on Autotrader in my area and there are used 2014 LT 5.3L crew cab 4x4s listed at the dealers at up to $35K and $36.5K. That's more than I would have paid for the new 2014 with the big incentive. I also just looked at new 2015s on the lot and I see several listed at $10K to $11K off the sticker so those are $34K to $36K plus TTL. So, I wouldn't be interested in a used 2014 unless I could get a much better deal than that.

Happy hunting...

Wait. I bought my truck for 35k. Does that mean I can get my money back and for all purposes get a 2016 model for the same price?
