I don't know if GM is still like this, but in high school i had a new at the time 2000 Pontiac Sunfire 4 door (thanks for the gift mom and dad!). I was friends with a girl (now my wife) who had the same year 2000 Pontiac Sunfire 2 door. I went to an event and parked near her one night, but apparently I left my lights on. Her father knew my car and saw the lights on and thought for the hell of it to try her car keys in my car so he could turn them off. Sure as shit it opened the doors. We couldn't believe it. It didn't turn the ignition, but it opened the doors.

 

I reached out to GM and inquired and they said it was not an issue because they only used i forget the number but it was low, around 25 different keys per model for the doors, so chances were decent your key would open another gm car of that year.

 

I'm not sure how GM is doing it now days, but this makes me wonder if they have changed anything.

I have used many different alarms and a while back when I worked at a dealership learned that the karr you pay 600-1000 for isn't worth the 50 dollars the dealer pays. If you google the alarm it is a single small module usually without a kill switch and can be ripped out very easy. Sucks to say as they aren't cheap. I've always optd for a viper with backup battery secondary and motion sensors in the car. If it isn't my exact fob opening it well the neighbors get pissed. With this truck I haven't gotten to play with a viper for it yet or any other good brand of alarm. There are a couple.

 

I wonder if onstar will send you a report. I'm sure they can see when you unlocked your car last. As a signal is sent. If they see your car was unlocked with the app then you will know the problem and can work for a fix. If they don't see something then well if it was locked they should see the time it was unlocked.

I don't know what happened but I find it far likely that you thought the doors were locked and they weren't, but who knows. You said you did a nightly check? Meaning every night you go out and check each door and see if the alarm is set? How is your alarm set, it goes off when the doors are open?

 

There is no way to know if a "device" can bypass your alarm but maybe this is the beginning of everyone getting their cars broken into with this new technology.

CsJump, Yeah talking with dealer trying to get my money back for the KARR system and get a top of the line viper, at least it will have perimeter alarm and will let me know when unlocked or locked.

 

hurric, every night I do a pre bed check to make sure trucks locked, tool box is locked and tailgate is locked. OnStar was my first call after police, they don't keep records of that. Alarm is set with double tap on lock, lights flash and horn honks. My neighbors hate me because I'm ocd making sure it's locked.

Don't know if everyone knows that if you want a horn honk to assure you the truck was locked when you walked away you double press the key fob lock button and then the horn will give you a audible sound assuring you the truck 'locked'.

 

What else is accomplished by doing the double button press on the fob vs just pressing the lock switch on the inside door as you are exiting the truck - anything? Is one method better (more secure) than the other?

Using the fob is supposed to arm the security system, I don't think that locking the truck with the door button does that.

Well, lets suppose the fob arms the security system - then is a double click on the fob is simply to arm the security system PLUS make the horn sound? That is, 1 click arms the system and the 2nd click beeps the horn?

The factory alarm system is armed when you lock the doors, either by fob or door button. I sometimes leave my fob in the truck and take only the key,Locking the door with the door button. When I unlock the door with the key, alarm goes off until I start the truck.

Though I would think a good portion of the petty thieves stealing tools aren't capable of bypassing two alarms and entering a vehicle unforced, it is possible. What I think is more possible is either you forgot to lock it or thought you did and it didn't by it not entirely having the button pushed or some other weird factor, happens all the time. That is why I watch to make sure my garage is fully closed, seen it go back up on its own once in a blue moon. Sorry and that sucks, any way to park it inside?

The garage think you mention happens unfortunately. Just the other day I know for a fact I closed the garage door to my res. Came back an hour later to it completely open. Thankfully we live in a semi secured area for the most part. I triple checked my cameras and no one seen or anything else that could have triggered it this time thankfully. I changed the codes anyway just because...

It activates regardless of using the door button or the fob. The red light on the dash that blinks tells you the status too and it is on a timer once you initially lock it. You can skip the timer if I recall correctly by pressing the lock button a second time which also gives you an audible cue that confirms the vehicle is locked.

I had that happen and it started to become more frequent. I installed a camera to watch and the only thing i could think of was that it was faulty as it would randomly open 24 hrs a day with no one around. I replaced the opener and never had the problem again.

If it starts happening more often I am definitely replacing the opener with a newer one. The one I have is older by some years. Fortunately, it has only happened 2-3 times over the last 4 years that I can confirm was HAL-9000 or one of his associates messing with me.

I've only read one of these "black box unlock" stories that sounds even remotely technically feasible and it consists of capturing a fob press (transmit) that is not received by the vehicle. That would usually require access to the fob itself.

Probably used a RCG (random code generator) built from computer parts you can buy from Radioshack. Spits out 10,000+ codes a second. They can not only unlock/open your truck and garage, door but also start and drive away in your truck. Seeing that your in Califoria and especially in the Bay Area, I bet that's what was used. Countless stories of this happening in your exact area on camaro5 forums.

 

Want to secure you truck? Park it inside a garage with a padlock on the inside.

      I have A 2020 1500 5.3 8 speed. LTZ. Transmission problems since 60,000 miles. Started when I go to store in morning to get my morning coffee before work leave truck running get back in put it in drive/ rev no movement step on gas a little slams into gear. Put in neutral step on gas little shake then put in gear and gose.  Shut truck off start .. ok now at stop light stop truck after a few seconds feel a little kick if that doesn’t happen stuck in 3/4 gear shut truck off wait few seconds and start usually ok again. If you down shift manually ok as long as you get into 1st before stop. If not it kicks . I WANT A NEW TRANSMISSION. Now I want a new truck it just hit 80,000 IDK IF ILL BUY CHEVY CAUSE THEY STILL HAVE THE PROBLEM AND REFUSE TO RECALL . Oh I’ve changed the fluid and filter 3 times now. And yes used mobile 1 not ac/delco cause it’s not meeting the requirements that mobile is did use ac/delco filter

      While waiting for parts I have been working on installing the AC compressor, new accumulator, and orifice tube. Also changed out the high side ball valve (original). The orifice tube that was in there wasn't too bad. Slightly dirty, a little bit of junk, but not blocked. Glad I changed it out.   The accumulator, which should have been a 5 minute job, may have just burned $50. Put some PAG in it, wrote the date and mileage on the side, fresh o-rings and gooey'd up the threads and rings with Nylog. Got everything connected and snugged and was going to vacuum down the system, and....   My manifold gauge won't fit on the port. It's not an R12 service port. It LOOKS like an R134 service port but the diameter is a hair too large. There's a sticker on the accumulator that says it's designed to be used with R12 and R134a systems only. So it's not R1234yf. Even if I reduced the diameter slightly with a file, the shoulder on the port is too large so the quick-connect valve won't lock on. I'm stumped. It's going back, and 50/50 on if they'll give me a refund.   Also, I did a fuel pressure test.... Key on, the gauge spikes to about 60psi and quickly bleeds off, like 2psi per second. The fuel isn't going into the plenum, no smell, starts fine, so I'm guessing there's a bad check valve in the pump and the fuel is just draining back into the tank. oh, hell. But, it shouldn't be a problem, pump primes just fine and the truck starts right up. It just means I can't really ever use fuel pressure to verify a leak at the injector or intake.
