Shattered back window

I was removing my extang solid fold cover in freezing cold weather and bumped my back window with the cover and of course it shattered completely. I have a 2015 silverado crew lt. Defroster In glass and privacy tint from factory. My question is, I asked if glass replacement from safelite glass would be original and they said no. If I wanted That I would have to call and get them to re-order glass and reschedule appointment. Is this worth the trouble. I had just assumed when I originally talked to them it would be original gm piece and not some aftermarket glass. I have zero experience with this. Thanks for any help.

When I built my truck. I did not want the power slider window.. but being a ltz it comes standard. One of my first mods I did was remove the power sliding window with a solid one... mine is not oem. I have had it for 8 months. Fits perfect no water has leaked through. The defroster works. I'm not taking anything away from oem but I'm just giving my personal .02

Non-OEM rear glass prevents trucks from doing long smokey burnouts!

They probably get the glass from the same place as OEM, they are probably the largest glass replacement company for automobiles. Not sure why something such as glass would have to be OEM, it is the seal around it by the installer that is most important. Not to mention the back glass doesn't see any debris or stress like the windshield does. Good luck OP, if it is tinted and has the defroster I would have no issues with what they installed.

I agree with Tyler. Having installed a lot of glass and we were also wholesaler I know that most of the tempered after market glass and oem come from the same factories. The most important part of the repair is cutting out the old urethane with pieces of glass still attached and not scratching the paint. Then applying the neat bead of urethane that doesn't ooze out all over the place and making sure the glass is centred and not pushed in to far or stick out.

I look at this way, with the truck being so new insurance would probably get oem but as it gets older then would go with non oem. This mostly applies to the windshield because I would guess they get chipped/cracked a lot more than rear glass. Doubt the back glass will break again I would go oem

I have already put 2 oem windshields in my 15 denali

Surprising how easily these can break if hit in the wring spot.

I actually prefer the window they used when I had mine replaced (rear window).

The heater lines are less visible from the outsidr, compared to the original. They did great replacing it, no scratches on the glass or paint. Don't know about the seals they use, but their work comes with a warranty.

If it does everything ylthe original did, but costs less or gets replaced faster/cheaper, why not go with the non-oem?

Personal opinion is it doesn't matter. Went round and round when my windshield cracked on my Dodge Ram several years ago and the insurance company wouldn't replace it with OEM. Ended up getting the aftermarket one and had it for years - no issue whatsoever and nearly half the price.

I concur they are likely made in the same factories and one gets stamped GM and one gets stamped something else. Just my .02

The biggest difference between OEM and non-OEM glass will be in optical performance. OEM has strict specs on smoothness of glass so that you won't see "waves" in the glass and blurry spots in the curved sections. Non-OEM glass may not be as optically clear. OEM glass may have more/better sound deadening performance as well - this applies mostly to high-end vehicles (Cadillac, MB, BMW, etc.). I wouldn't worry about these things too much on your rear window. The front windshield is a different story.

    • New to diesel trucks. I happened to find my oil cooler leaking oil externally with only 4,000 miles on the truck. I didn’t realize this was an issue until I started researching it. Dealer is going to replace it under warranty but I’m wondering if there’s anything GM is working on to fix this issue. I’ve heard the oil filter used is the same as they use on their V6 motors and that’s what is causing the problems. Should I switch to a bigger filter or keep using the OEM recommended?
    • So, GMCustomerService:  Judging by the Update History pictured above, is this truck missing any updates that it actually needs. If it's just for the infotainment system, the radio is working fine and no trouble with SeriusXM. and Android Auto is working fine wirelessly with my phone. Some months ago, an update notice was sent to my truck. I approved the update and it finished saying that the update was successful, but it seems that whatever that update was, it didn't actually get installed - at least not if I'm to go by the Update History shown above.   So, again, are there any updates that this truck really should have? I've checked with my dealer but they're reluctant or commit to anything and if I want them to check, they require a $200.00 fee just to check it out and then I'd have to pay for the actual update(s).    Ignorance is bliss, and if none of the updates goes to fixing any mechanical discrepancies, I'll just leave things as is.
    • Hey everyone, I recently had an issue with my 07 2500HD GMT900. My DRL’s stay on at all times. Right front turn and right mirror turn signal indicator stay on solid at all times. By “at all times” I mean the only way to make them go off is disconnecting the battery. I tore the headlight assemblies out, tried disconnecting the harnesses to eliminate bad wiring at the harness, I unplugged the headlight switch, no change and the mirror turn signal still stayed on. My first thoughts were : Bad bulb and/or socket somewhere, under hood fuse panel bad, bcm bad, tail light or trailer wiring problem, or some random short to power in the harness.  Possibly a bad ground but unlikely. I had a big clue in the fuse panel, it had a burnt smell. I started pulling every fuse that had to do with DRL or right turn/park lamp. Nothing made the right directional turn off but pulling the DRL2 fuse made the DRL’s go out.  After studying wiring diagrams, I found that both problems had that fuse panel in common, the bcm also controls both problems but knowing the fuse panel had a burnt smell I removed and disassembled the fuse panel and found a little corrosion on the printed circuit board.  I ordered a new fuse panel from Amazon for like $260. When it arrived I installed it, and put everything back together, the problem was fixed. I figured the fuse panel needed to be replaced anyway so that was a logical place to start. Hopefully this story helps someone in the future. Regretfully I didn’t scan for codes before I did everything.
    • That stinks. I’m sitting on the side of the road right now with the same issue. Never had an issue before taking it in for the ground strap recall. Now I’m outside of warranty and they’ll probably want $200 just to diagnose what they already “fixed”.
    • I wonder kind of nuts and bolts they will come up with next? Jim
