Muffler Only Replacement Questions

How does it sound at cruising? Can you hear it when you are on the freeway or any drone? I don't want to shut off the AFM because I'm afraid my mpg will drop

So I set my AFM to only 70+mph. So I can get the benefit when I'm cruising. I don't want it on when I'm speeding up and down all the time. I still like to have it when traveling though. Honestly I don't notice it. I think if I really concentrate I might be able to hear it in V4 mode but I think it's just in my head. If I wouldn't have read about the drone all over this forum I would have never noticed. Also at cruising speed you can't hear the exhaust much. So that is probably a major reason why. I don't want to hear my exhaust when I'm cruising so this was perfect for me. I think the 14" would be too loud for me.

Thats exactly what I'm looking for! I want to hear it when I gas it but not when Im cruising. How was your MPG been effected with the AFM change ?

I can't be sure, I added the exhaust, CAI and adjusted my speedometer all within a few weeks. I would estimate I only lost about 1/2 mpg but I really can't be sure. I'm getting about 16.5 mpg and that is with mostly city/freeway driving and little to no V4 mode.

Replace factory muffler with either magnaflow or borla muffler, possibly remove resonator and leave everything else stock (including flapper valve). I tow a horse trailer with my truck and don't know how loud the muffler will be under load while towing but don't want it completely obnoxious both for me and for the horses as I do a lot of highway driving with the trailer and a lot of hills locally. I don't need anything to extreme but just a nice sounding rumble that lets people know I'm actually driving a V8 truck not some little ecoboost or V6er. I'm not planning on adding a tuner for a while as I can't really afford it and if I have to shell out the $ for something like the GM Borla system I might as well just do the tuner first then instead.

 

Any help is greatly appreciated!

What I did to get sound and no drone was KEEP IN THE OEM FLAPPER removed my OEM muffler and resonator replaced the muffler with a vibrant muffler 15 " or something then just welded pipe in to where the resonator was. I want hit more bark so down the road ill do a Flowmaster 40 series muffler but what I have now was perfect gave me a nice tone no drone quite on the hwy only opens up with you put your foot down

Flow and sure it cuts down sound some, but not really no.

curious about fitment. i've done cat back kits in the past, not a magnaflow, but regardless the kit usually needed the piping bent a tad to look and fit properly. was this pretty spot on? and does it interfere with the spare tire at all as far as rubbing or just in the way? i'm curious because this exhaust gets pretty high reviews and i'm pretty sure once you answer these questions i'm gonna pull the trigger and do the install on my own as well. Thanks in advance.

Sorry it took so long but I finally picked up a spare. I'd say there is a good inch and a half clearance, maybe more. I also wanted to add that there is definitely V4 drone. It took me awhile to notice it more on the freeway. I had my V4 set at only 70+ so it wasnt really an issue but I set it at 60+ to see if I could gain some mpg and now it's much more noticeable. Just FYI...

I chose to spend my money a little different. I cut out the stock muffler and left the resonator and flapper. I then bought a superchips programmer and am going to disable afm. The total cost of all this is 320 bucks. 40 bucks to cut out the muffler and replace with piece of pipe at local muffler shop and programmer to get rid of v4 chopper sound and make the truck a little more peppy. It sounds really good with just a muffler delete. Not very loud at all. Quiet cruising in v8 mode. I guess I'm going to clamp the flapper open now that I have a programmer coming...

Cut the flapper out with muffler if you're gonna disable afm. Trust me. I got disabled afm replaced only muffler and flapper with 2.75 inch pipe and it sounds awesome.

Yea if your gonna disable AFM then why not cut out the valve?

 

I have a Borla ProXS 40359 muffler and left both the resonator and valve. There are videos of this set up on here somewhere that's where I got the idea.

 

I tow a TT so I just have the valve propped open when I'm not towing.

I am looking at doing the exact same system on my truck. I want the nice throaty sound without being to loud. When your cruising do you notice your exhaust to much?
