Will changing the oil on my 6.2 void my warranty?

Truck has 1100 miles on it. I have a GM filter and M1 0w20 waiting to go into it. With all the threads on GM denying warranty repairs for stupid reasons, I'm scared to change my oil. Maybe a GM rep can chime in here.

You can change your own oil. Keep the receipts. If you are "paranoid" like me I take photos of the oil change to prove you did it. (more so for my wifes van and toyota because they seem to not like people doing their own maintenance or thats how the local dealer made me feel)

Thanks. I'm not paranoid about the fact that it was done, just paranoid that I used synthetic even though it's approved by GM

Why are you changing your own oil? Don't you have the 2 years 24k free oil changes?

Some people would rather do it themselves because they know they know it will be done correctly, and I'm one of those people.

As am i after the BS i just went thru bringing it into a dealer. (albeit a non-gm but a dealer none the less)

Unless its major engine work, i do it myself. Anything deeper than that i give to my friends father who owns a shop and who i trust will do quality work.

Because I want to get all the metal shavings out and I want synthetic. GM won't change until oil life is below 20%

Generally, the public is unaware that it is illegal for a vehicle manufacturer to tie the warranty of its product to the use of the manufacturers own brand of lubricant. Federal law seeks to ensure competition within the marketplace and that specifically includes guaranteeing continued warranty coverage outside of the OEM-branded lubricants. In short, you have the right to use the oil of your choice. If the lubricant did not cause the problem, the OEM warranty cannot be voided, period

As long as that oil of your choice meets the stated specifications. If you own a 2011 or newer GM vehicle, and you don't use the correct GM branded oil, you better be using an oil that meets the dexos specs or you can kiss any chance of a claim on an internally lubricated part goodbye.

I'm also one of those people, but this was my first brand new truck and I figure I might as well take them up on the offer of free oil changes and tire rotations for 2 years. Especially after spending the money I did (which wasn't that much for one of these, just a well equipped LT). I had it done for the 3rd time earlier this year and that will be the last "free one" so I'll be doing it myself from now on.

There are lots of oils which are approved (licenced) to the dexos specification. (including 0w20 Mobil 1 discussed above)

Clicking on the top of the columns in the table will sort the table by that column.

Most dealers are no longer worrying about what % oil life is left. (what if it was accidentally reset?).
