Jon A, I just looked at the link you had and it says: The 8L90 has a torque capacity of 738 lb.-ft. (1000 Nm). Even better!

Jon, A. Sorry. You said engine torque which was correct. The above number is "gearbox torque" evidently.

on the larger axle 9.76", what is actually larger, the Axle it self, the ring gear, carrier? Looks like the same housing bolt count with or without on the inspection plate but could be wrong.

I think it's the regular 9.76" axle. When you are selecting the NHT Max tow package, you could have a V6 with the small 10 bolt. I think it's just like how they include the tow hitch in the NHT. Same hitching onthe trailer pkg.

NHT also gets a larger front sway bar.

I didn't realize that. Good info, thanks.

The axles, carrier, etc are all the same. The ring and pinion gears are different obviously but not just the gear portion--the shaft of the pinion gear is significantly larger and the pinion head and tail bearings are larger and beefier--which requires larger openings in the housing which is why the housings are not interchangeable.

That should make the 9.76 a fair amount stronger (from the torque perspective, there's no difference in payload handling ability) and it should better handle large amounts of torque for long periods of time as the larger pinion bearings will last longer and run cooler under high loads.

Jon A, you're saying the max tow pkg 3.73 9.76" is "beffier" than say the 3.42. Did not know that. So the max tow pkg is really worth the coin.

do all v8 trucks come with the rpo codes kc4 and knp

KC4 Cooling, external engine oil cooler
KNP Cooling, auxiliary external transmission oil cooler

KC4 and KNP are standard on all trim levels if truck is Sierra.

On silverado, KNP "included and only available with the(L83) 5.3L v8" on Work truck, LS, Silverado Custom, LT1 and LT2.

On LTZ and High Country it is standard. (and the V6 is not available on LTZ and HC)

Not exactly. The 9.76" whether it has 3.73's, 3.42's or 3.23's is beefier than the 9.5" whether it has 4.10's, 3.42's, 3.23's, or 3.08's. All NHT's and 6.2's (whether they have the NHT option or not) get the 9.76".

That said, the 9.5 is a really strong axle for a 1/2 ton--much stronger than most have had in years past. I think you'd need to put a lot of miles on it towing a really heavy trailer before you'd notice any difference in the life of the components. Or, of course, abusing it on the drag strip with a 6.2. But I don't think I've heard of anybody really having an issue with the 9.5 so far.

^ Gotcha. SO my 3.42 9.76" Rear axle is the same axle with just different ratio gears, compare to the max tow package 3.73 rear 9.76". Which is how I've always interpreted the max tow rear axle statement; they are upgrading from the small 9.5" axle to a 3.73 9.76". And yes, I agree the new 9.76" rear axle in my truck was one of the reasons I was swayed away from the F150 or Ram. My gripes about GM 1/2 tons for the past 10-12 yrs has been the rear drum brake 10 bolt and some other items which were also addressed.

If you are speaking of the 2014 in your signature you have the 9.5" rear end as your truck is a 5.3. The only 5.3 powered trucks that get the 9.76" rear are those with the NHT option which forces the 6 speed and 3.73 gears. The 6.2's have the 9.76" rear regardless of what option or ratio they have. The 9.5" is an overkill rear for these trucks..... and quite frankly I wish my 6.2 didn't have the 9.76" because then I could at least mod the rear end with a real locker..... I have doubts the aftermarket will ever make anything for the 9.76" trucks as they are such a small number produced in comparsion to the 9.5" equipped trucks.
