2016 Climate Control Question

Recommended Posts

On my 16 with the dual automatic climate control, I've found that when it's in auto, the air conditioning light will be on regardless of the temperature. If I push it to turn it off, it takes the system out of auto. On my 08, I could shut the ac light off and it'd remain in auto mode. Is this the new normal for the 16's and possibly 14-15's?

From my understanding the A/C also helps with foggy windows, at least with this system. I have a '14 so it's for the K2s. I'm sure it does because I haven't had any problem with the windshield or windows fogging up with it on auto after they've cleared with the defroster. My 98 even after clearing them they still got fogged up form my breath and whatever else.

Yes from what has been stated here before. The light being on does not mean the compressor is running. The A/C stays on as per the above post for moisture control.

It is the same operation with the 2014's through 2016's as my 2014 did this as well, normal operation.

The auto mode sucks on these trucks. You can't even recirc in auto. Was pretty pissed about this.

Just hit the recirc button it will work fine.

Mine must be broken. It doesn't stay on in auto.

my 2015 is the same way. Push auto and recirc light goes off and visa versa. Also when running recirc, can still smell out side air. Very annoying when around vehicles with bad exhaust.

The light turns off, but I find that it stays pretty "automatic" afterwards. Its not broken.

Exactly my experience too! You can still smell diesels and smokers.

Yep, the early 14's had a recirculate setting that closed completely, and would block out the smells. There was an early TSB on recalibrating the HVAC controls to set the end position of the recirc damper to leave a small opening (10% I believe). It was sealing TOO good, causing dust to get sucked in from the outside. This post has the PIT5229A document that addressed the issue initially.

Everything is a trade off I guess.

Wtf. I want it sealed back off.

I haven't had a problem with the auto function on mine. Most of the time I don't even know it's on it's so comfortable. The only time it's not on auto is if I need to defrost but once it's done I put it back on auto.

my 15 and the loaner 16 behave the same way with auto climate.

the a/c ligt is on and it uses the compressor as needed to regulate temperature and humidity. (a/c plus heat=dryer heat and keeps your windows from fogging on cooler days.)

manually pressing the a/c button doesn't take the system out of auto, it simply overrides the systems ability to use the compressor a an element in the system. If you want to test this, turn the a/c off then turn the temp down, the fan will go up and the air (should) get cooler because its adjusting the blend door to pull air from a different source.

^Interesting. Thanks for the info everyone. The auto was just an adjustment to get used to on my 08, and with what appeared to be a change on the 16, I was prepared to get frustrated again, ha.
