Autonomous Braking Is Coming To All GMs. The Upside

I had this system on my Dodge Charger SRT and it was amazing tech. I could set my cruise at 70mph.. and it would maintain 1-2-3 car distance between my car and the car infront of me, then when I passed would speed up to the cruising speed of 70mph without ever touching the gas. It was great for the 100 thousands of miles PA has construction zones on. Also the same tech, existing off ramps, would also maintain the distance set right up to the stop and once again never touching the gas or brake. It also would do the emergency stops. I tested it when exiting the highway off ramp at 70mph with my foot on the gas and the car would apply the brakes so that I wouldn't rear end the car sitting at the light.

I personally would LOVE this feature in a pickup especially after knowing how well it worked. Dodge has it nailed down in their up scaled cars, so I could only assume this could be integrated in to the truck pretty easily. The system is easy to turn off too.. so its not like "controls" the driver or the car. It just keeps you from making a costly mistake.

Yeah, sure, as soon as GM learns how to program their transmissions to function properly, then we'll consider letting them tune this system.

Maybe my skepticism from my career is too strong. I have a very hard time relinquishing the controls to an object that is able to drive over 100 MPH with my loved ones inside. Again, I believe my years in equipment engineering have made me doubt the reliability of intricate systems such as this autonomous braking.

My father has a 2008 Arcadia that has been in the shop twice for the sunroof draining into the fuse box, GM also has had to recall heated washer fluid on my 07 Sierra because of fire potential. Now, we should trust autonomous braking?

J-tenner is on the money, don't invent new technology until you have mastered the basics.

My wife's Equus has this on it and I use it on the interstate highways it works fine, she won't use it, but she is 71 and new stuff doesn't fit her stile, but I love it. Car has 39,000 miles and still working just like the day we purchased it.

Hey now. I heard they were gonna take away the dead blow tranny adjustment hammer and give a new monkey lessons in last minute braking. Who wants to be a beta tester?

Its not the, " still working just like the day we purchased it" statements that scare me. Its what GM's fail safe is when the system does have a hiccup that does...

I could use my circular saw every day for twenty years without safety glasses, no issues...but what is the plan if something does happen?

How about winter driving conditions? This will definitely cause more issues or collisions than it will prevent. Keep control in the driver's hands please.

You might cut your fingers off for all I know if you stick them in a saw, but like i said mine works and I love as far as hiccups I guess you could coke to death with them, but to each his own if they could come out with a free truck, some would have a problem with that also, some are just negative about anything.......

You call it negative, I call it necessary doubtful thinking. Some have to question integrity right?

Enjoy your soon to be hands free car.

I get the apprehension, but I also remember when power windows, automatic transmissions, push button 4WD were scary technologies to be shied away from...

Just sayin'.

Those are all convenience features, the automatic braking is just to baby sit the people who can't drive, and cost everyone who can more money, and a headache when it has problems.

Automatic transmissions allow more focus on the road. Automatic braking allows less focus on the road.

Mercedes has had this for years and it is awesome. I always wondered why the big three never had it.

The problem I see with any tech is the truth remains that you are numbing down driving to the lowest denominator.

Let me look at some cars that I currently own, a 1967 Riviera and a 2007 Tahoe

The 67 Rivera has no options except for AC. no power windows, no traction control, no ABS, no power locks, no cruise (hell it does not even have a gas pedal, it broke off years ago, I push on the little nub with my shoe)
The 07 Tahoe has everything it is an LTZ after-all. I use a backup camera, and it has huge mirrors, has rear backup warning system.

I would let my 17 year old daughter drive the Tahoe, but not the Riv. Why? because in the Tahoe she has become accustomed to these fancy gadgets that help her drive. If I put her in the old Riviera, she would probably do fine until there was a problem and things started to go wrong. I believe these systems, although great, create stupid drivers, you take a person that is so used to driving with all these gadgets they would be surprised when they fail, or get into a car without them. I know she will never be as good of a driver as I am, she does not have to be, the car takes over where the brain stops.

I have found myself actually using those systems, and tearing away from them is very hard, the backup camera is great for getting really close to the wall behind you without hitting it, no denying it, but I have lost that ability to tell on my own where things are.
