How to tell when you need new shocks? If so, what kind to get?

Does anyone have any advice on when to tell you need new shocks and what kind to get? This is for a 2001 Chevy Silverado with the Z71 package and it has around 94000 miles on it. It does have some rust on the shocks. I just noticed the trucks seems to really shake a lot when going over bumps.

original shocks? The shocks on my 2000 were shot around 40-50K so I replaced them with Bilsteins

I'd go with Bilstein. Check out Summit Racing, Jegs, Autoanything, Rock Auto, etc...

Do you buy different shocks for the front?

Also Ryan, do you think Ex-cabs trucks work very well when you are going to have 2 kids, one might be a booster, the other one will be in a baby carrier?

Go on ebay and buy a set of all four Bilstien 4600s. The set will be around 275 dollars. If you go with cheap shocks, they will fail very quickly...

Is there a benefit to the 5100's if you don't have a lift? My Rancho's are at the end of the road, but I can't decide if I want the 4600's or 5100's.

It could be done, if I had to choose I would go CC the extra room is well worth it

I had car seats in mine. Does it work? Technically, yes. I actually have the ability to hook up 4 car seats. That being said, it's definitely not ideal.

you will know if you need them by looking to see if they are leaking and or if you go over pumps and your front end makes a clanking noise and or it doesnt react right.

I ordered bilsteins from shockwarehouse.com for my '99 with good results.

Hey what bilsteins numbers did you end up with? I'm looking at replacing mine soon...

There is a heavy duty and a light duty Bilstein. Heavy duty ones ride stiffer...

I have the 4600's in my truck. Definitely stiffer but I like the ride sense I tow and have my toolbox in the bed full of stuff.
