Alternator Shuts off?

Hey everyone, my first post and a little confused by my 2015 Silverado charging system. I know it has the EPM system but after driving for a few hours I noticed the voltmeter was just inside the left normal line about 12 or so volts. No messages or chimes but didn't seem to be charging. After stopping for gas and restarting the volt meter shot up to a little above 14 volts for about 1 - 2 minutes and slowly returned to the left most normal line. After returning home the volt meter still showed what seems to be low voltage so I checked with a multi meter and got 12.8 volts. shut the engine and checked again and still 12.8 so NO charge at all while running. After restart volts always go up to 14.2, so is this normal operation for this vehicle? I have other fairly new vehicles and none do this. Thanks and I'm sorry if this has been posted before but don't want to make a trip to the dealer if this is normal!

It is designed to do that in order to prevent overcharging - usually happens after extended (over 20min) driving at sustained speeds. I had the same complaint.

There is a nice blurb about this in your owners manual. I suggest you crack it open and read up on it.

This threw me for a loop the first time I saw it. Makes sense though, I can see the alternators lasting longer now if they're not constantly charging.

Thanks for the replies, I do feel better knowing that this is normal operation. I did read the owners manual, cover to cover but the chapter on charging system only states the charge will drop somewhat but it says nothing about the alternator completely shutting off. I had the same exact voltage at the battery with a multi meter while the engine was running as I did with the engine shut off. Not charging. It stayed at that voltage almost an hour while driving. a little concerning. thanks for the quick replies.

Even more so batteries, as they will not be overcharged.

Apparently this normal but there is nothing in the owners manual about it. It happened to me this weekend and I was 300 miles from home.  AND of course after business hours at the nearest dealership.  Ruined my entire weekend worrying about if I was going to get back home.     Its scary and I wish the dealer would have told me about this.

It has been like this sonce 2005 models. There is a battery current sensor on the ground cable that monitors this.

You can override this by turning on the headlights. It will stay at maximum output.

      I just bought this. A minimum for me but, I don`t work anymore and don`t want the heavy update costs of the higher end tools. You would have to make money with them.   https://www.topdon.us/collections/diagnostic-tools/products/artidiag-pro   Even this tool has a $250.00 update cost after 2 years.

      I have an Autel, works great for what it is. Can't do some specific things because you need say the GM tool, VCDS for Audi/Volkswagon and others of course. But those times are few and far between for me.   The other tool I'd like to try one day is the new Topdon scan tools. Seen several video's on them and many youtube people review them.    I've never subscribed for updates or payed to do that stuff on my Autel, so I'm sure I'm missing out on some of the updates but I'm fine with that for now.

      I am in the market for a bidirectional scan tool so was hoping someone can help point me in the right direction. There are so many options out there it is hard to narrow down which make/model to choose.   I have always done my own vehicle work so looking to maximize capability with the scanner. Ideal price is $1k or less but would be willing to exceed if it opens up significant benefits.  Currently my 24 2500 is the newest vehicle but also have a few mid to late 2010s Subarus as well.    It seems that the Autel MP900 has a decent amount of features at a reasonable price?

      There was talk over the last couple of years that the contract to build these trucks between GM and International would not be renewed.  International moved production of all their other trucks besides the companion CV model out of the Springfield plant some time ago when they opened their San Antonio plant.  That left Springfield only building the Silverado Medium Duty, International CV Series, and some Express/Savanna long wheelbase cutaways.  International also put the plant up for sale some time ago.  This all answered my earlier question as to why GM and International did nothing with these trucks since they were introduced, as they had basically become a market 'placeholder' with a finite life.    The Silverado Medium Duty/International CV trucks were interesting combination of a GM powertrain, electrical system, and K2XX Silverado cab with an International chassis that was supposedly designed for a step-van type vehicle they never produced.  They were manufactured in International's Springfield plant along with the IH MV series initially.  When first introduced, there was much talk that the Silverado Medium Duty/CV would eventually get a gasoline engine option along with other upgrades and GM and IH would work on a class 6/7 joint venture truck.  This was before VW bought Navistar out, after that happened no more was said.  Draw your own conclusions...   About the time talk started that the GM/IH joint venture was not going to be renewed, rumors started that GM would develop a new line of medium duty trucks themselves.  The story is the new trucks will be part of the next generation HD's due in 2028, and will still feature a 'straight rail' chassis design that the current medium duty has.  GM views this as a desirable feature that differentiates their truck from the competition.  A gasoline engine option is also expected.  As the current Silverado Medium Duty remains in production until September 2026 and there is still a lot of inventory available do not expect any official word for some time.   I believe GM remains committed to their successful partnership with Isuzu, and all the LCF models will still be available from Chevy Commercial dealers.  Isuzu is on the cusp of opening a new large plant in South Carolina and there is also speculation that this may result in new product for both Isuzu and Chevy Commercial dealers.
