Thank you so much for this! Taking in my truck next week to have it serviced for this issue. It has been driving me nuts ever since I bought the truck last year.

Here you go:

Mine goes back in for the third time next week. The 2-3 shift at slight pedal depression still has a good kick. All the updates are done. I don't know what they're going to do this time....

I have about 4500 miles and overall mine is good. I have felt one or two big clunks, but not a common occurrence. I do notice that the shifts are not smooth when the transmission is cold, but once it warms up it shifts pretty good for a truck. I don't expect the transmission to be as smooth as a sedan or SUV.

I get a clunk when I go right into reverse on startup and sometimes rough shift when I am slowing down, almost stopped, and then hit the gas again.

All in all it shifts nicer than my dad's previous Ford (his 2015 is about the same as my new truck) and better than the 6spd I test drove.

Mine has developed the shudder/vibration at around 55-70. I can have it and M8 and the steering wheel will start vibrating and if I drop it down to M7 it immediately goes away. Towed the boat yesterday and it happen while in D. Mine does not clunk very much but does occasionally it will . Going in for service tomorrow and hopefully they can take care of it. I did not buy the truck to drive around in M7 because I like using the AFM and getting some better MGP.

As I stated previously, I too really like my 6.2/8 spd as well, especially for towing my TT. However, just read an article about the upcoming F-150 3.5/10 spd. Very interesting and something to consider for sure. Especially like the tranny gear display that shows real-time the gear that's engaged. Article URL below.

This is mine...

Straight line acceleration, no problems. Love it. Like a beast.

But the sporadic clunks down shifting while coming to a stop, the clunks from 1 to 2 to 3 while slowly driving (like a parking lot). And the shudder on v4 when driving in slow stop and go traffic from 18-25 mph drives me crazy.

And some days we're great and others I hate it.

Hey fellas just my 2 cents here. My 2014 SLT (61k miles) had the 5.3 6 speed with 3.42 and had a noticeable clunk when downshifting at low speeds UNTIL I installed a set of leaf spring u bolt clamps 5 inches in front of the axle block. This eliminated 90% of the clunking.

I have not had the 2016 Denali long enough (300 miles since friday) to judge the 6.2 8 speed and 3.23 but man this thing is a 420hp beast when compared to the 14 5.3 6 spd. Lovin it so far

Could be the drive shaft slip yoke binding, not sliding in and out freely. Had this problem from the get-go on my 2008 5.3. Dealer replaced two yokes and did a couple of cleaning and greasing so. But, good news, after about 100,000 miles or so the problem pretty much went away. Btw, had the problem in one of my wife's Suburbans, she went thru four while we were raising kids, can't recall which one it was. I did find a fix on the internet that some DIY guys were doing; they drilled through the female piece of the yoke, tapped holes on both sides, screwed in grease fittings, reason for doing both sides was to retain driveshaft balance. I never did this myself, but feedback results on Internet were positive as I recall.

took me a little to get used to it, and it also "learns" the first 500 miles or so. Now I am at 3500 and I don't notice the extra shifting anymore, I am happy with it.

I do believe it may have more to do with the slip yoke.

I remember reading that mod. I'm at 4.2k miles. Going in for my 1st oil change in a couple weeks and I'm going to let them address it first before I start doing any mods like leaf spring clamps.

I also want them to road force balance the wheels. Hopefully, it'll get the last of the little vibration I have out.

I had my transmission reprogrammed by the dealer or so they said a few weeks. The clunking and sporadic shifting is back. Time to take it in again at the next oil change

Just got my truck traded with GM assistance. I have to say, I am glad it's over. And can't believe it was an even trade. Traded a 2015 8 speed clunker for a 2016 6 speed (possible future clunker) and it cost me $201. The MSRPs were within $200 of each other pretty amazed how well GM and my dealer stepped up for me.

Thompson Sales in Springfield MO is a great dealer!

The best thing I have done for this truck was disable the AFM.

Around town it makes an incredible difference.

A lot less confusion on trannys part when AFM is disabled.

I still have vibration at highway speed and clunking badly on decel but I am not thinking of blowing it up anymore. :)

    • My 2025 Silverado 1500 had to receive a brand-new engine (long block) under warranty last month at only around 16,500 miles. Before the replacement, the truck repeatedly displayed "Engine Oil Level Low" warnings, even though the Oil Life Monitor still showed around 50% remaining after about 6,000 miles since my last oil change. After seeing the warning several times, I checked the dipstick with the engine cold, and the oil level was completely normal. The next day, the message escalated to "Add Engine Oil." At first, I assumed it was just a faulty oil level sensor, so I brought the truck to the dealership. After inspecting the engine, they found internal cylinder wall scoring and ultimately replaced the entire long block under warranty. Before this happened, I was planning to install a 4-inch lift and suspension upgrade on my truck. After needing a new engine at just 16,500 miles, I honestly don't see the point anymore. I also contacted GM to ask whether my vehicle qualified for a buyback, but I was informed that it does not at this time. Anyway, this experience has left me with serious concerns about the long-term reliability of this engine. I sincerely hope NHTSA expands the current investigation or recall to include 2025 model and performs a thorough inspection of affected vehicles. My biggest concern is that these engines may fail shortly after the powertrain warranty expires. If GM truly stands behind this engine, then at the very least, please consider extending the powertrain warranty to 10 years for affected owners. That would go a long way toward restoring customer confidence.
    • Without exception but then I'm the odd duck, right? I know what goes into that test, how it is calculated and thus how to beat it. But EPA values are often not beaten by the general public and the government has in past years adjusted the means and methods to come to those values to more closely approximate "Joe Average".    The only real trick to beating that EPA average is don't drive like "Joe Average".    It's the same method you used to profit from "Economic Migration" and in doing so beat the 'stats'. But you, like me, are not "Joe Average".     The thing you don't seem to grasp is this "Purchasing Power Index" isn't forward looking. It doesn't predict what it going to be but looks backward and states what it was. They are not telling us what the THINK, they are telling us what they MEASURED. Example:    Wife says "I'm going to lose 40 pounds by Christmas". May she does, maybe she doesn't but the doctors office who weighed her when she made that statement and again at Christmas only REPORTS what the RESULT was. You and I can banter about what was possible and what aunt Tilly did till the cows come home but the result is the result. Arguing otherwise is.....irrational. That's all I'm saying. This isn't about:      What you are calling a 'Statistic' is a RESULT not a CALCUATION and as a result the RULE. Like gravity as a rule, it can not be broken.
    • Just wanted to say thank you for posting this. Years later, your thread is still helping Silverado owners.   I bought my 2025 Silverado 1500 in January 2025, and I've had what feels like the exact same rattle since day one. After reading your findings, I believe my truck has the same issue with the cable carrier contacting the rear sliding window. To be honest, I had pretty much given up on pursuing the issue. It wasn't until I recently drove another brand's pickup that I realized just how quiet their cabin was—and how noisy mine has been all along. On my truck, the rattle happens on almost any paved road, gets even worse on rougher pavement, and I can even hear it during braking and acceleration.   I actually referenced your thread when submitting my case to GM, hoping they'll recognize this as a recurring issue instead of treating it as an isolated incident. The reason I reached out to GM first is because my dealership told me they would need to keep the truck for at least two days just to diagnose the problem. I was concerned that even after two days, they still might not be able to identify the source of the rattle before giving the truck back to me. I had also asked a few dealerships about this issue during previous service visits, but none of them seemed to know what was causing it or had a solution. That's why I decided to contact GM directly first, hoping they might already have an official repair procedure or guidance for this issue.   I also hope GM eventually comes up with an official fix for this problem. I have a feeling there are many Silverado owners experiencing the same rattle, but most either choose to live with it or simply don't know what the cause is.   Really appreciate you taking the time to document your diagnosis. Your post is still making a difference years later.
    • I have 2 choices.
    • Do you have access to BP fuels? Some stations have Silver 91 E-0 priced the same as their 93 E-10.  There is a local Marathon with 90 alky free for $6 a gallon but I go down the road to BP for $5-ish. They also have a 100 E-0 but that stuff is $10 a pop.
