For the umpeenth time based on your example, did OnStar deny calling emergency services in this situation? No. Was Emergency Services notified? Yes and they didn't respond. Is OnStar a cell phone provider? No....terrible example you used. OnStar is not liable to break into your vehicle for you without some sort of validity of who you are. Paying for a subscription, OnStar can validate who you are because they can link your personal info to banking records, or by using the FREE phone app which can do authentication with a PIN. Don't use either one...that's on you. It's no different than using a home monitoring service like ADT...don't pay for service, they're not monitoring your property. Without verifying the incident, OnStar assumes a huge liability through the many examples already given in this post. How would you feel knowing your truck was broken into even stolen with the help of OnStar's laxidaisical policies? OnStar would already be out of business if people with your mindset ran the company through many of the faulty pracitce lawsuits that would ensue. Hakers and those that look to do ill will look for these holes in process and procedurs to domthe bad things they do.

 

 

Sorry but that is as dumb as saying that someone picking up a cell off contract without any plan and could not get emergency assistance because they had not paid for it.

 

There is a law that stipulates that all cell providers must provide assistance regardless if the device is on a plan or not. That law applies to all cell phone companies and SMR licensees.

 

Then there is also the morality and using just plain common sense issue.

 

But again here is the thing, having worked for call centres (and even the particular call centre company that OnStar outsources to) the agents are told, as part of their training, if someone needs emergency assistance, that they are obligated by law to provide that assistance. The some company also happens to handle Logitech/Apple support. Those agents as well are legally obligated to help a person in duress. One example that I can think of was when one lady was calling for help on her Apple product, she started going to her basement during the call to check and in the process tumbled down the stairs. Now she did not even have any Apple support contract or was even under any warranty. The agent called 911, and had emergency services go assist the lady while keeping her on the phone until they arrived.

Verification is down via pin code over the phone as well as a security question and having your Onstar account number (which never expires, subscribed or not) helps as well. They are a SMR licensee and obligated to the exact same FCC regulations as cell carriers.

I always though your truck wouldn't lock with fob inside. During the free on star period if you use your phone app it will keep working even without keeping on star service. It did for two years for me until I traded my 14 GMC in.

You can reprogram the lock so that your remote is needed to lock it. With mine now I can't shut the door fast enough after pushing down the lock button before it unlocks. No more locked in keys for me.

Let's please put this to rest as the contemporary trend to blame someone else instead of taking responsibility for one's own action.........and as far as the "child endangerment issue" complaint.....there is only one entity whose actions endangered the life of a child, and it ain't OnStar, GM, the police, fire and rescue, the car salesman or laws of the State.

And, in my world that mistake definitely qualifies as a "two striker".

Why yes i have, and i don't have an active subscription. In my circumstance OnStar was happy to put me through to subscriptione services. They are a company that is out to make money. No subscription no service, it's been that way for years regardless of what you think and they haven't been sued for not responding to non subscribers. You are trying to compare apples to oranges.

 

Also, OnStar is not a cell phone service provider, they used to use the cellular network backbone of Verizon and most recently contracted though AT&T, so your assertion is incorrect, it's out there on the FCC website on 911 response for cellular providers. OnStar did not refuse the OP access to emergency services, which is where your comparison falls flat and i pointed out earlier. Go back and reread the OPs original post. 911 dispatch refused to respond. OnStar needs validation of an emergency from the first responders to support which didnt happen.

I lock my fob in the truck all the time when I go kayaking, just take the key with me.

I agree that OnStar is not responsible for the window and shouldn't unlock a car without being able to verify you are the owner. I'm trying to figure out why so many are bashing the OP's wife for endangerment. There is a difference between a mistake and neglect. The car was on with the AC running and the wife was right with the vehicle the whole time. That's a far cry from forgetting your child is in the back seat and going grocery shopping for an hour.

 

Argue all you want about who should have done what but I'm sure the mom already feels bad enough and guarantee she won't make this mistake again.

 

OP, I'm glad your kiddo is ok and I'd invest some time into fixing your app and maybe finding out what your local police department's policy is. My opinion is in the end if they need to get a kid out of a vehicle they should have no problem breaking in or breaking the window.

The OP does not make it clear how the door locked. To remote start you have to lock the doors then hold the start button. Then you have to unlock the door to get in.

 

Can you remote start with the doors open? Or the wife must of pressed the door lock button on the driver door before closing it?

I tapped into my power locks and added a momentary switch to unlock the truck. I've done this on every vehicle since I've had kids for this very reason. Only had to use it once and if you can find it I'll give you 100.00 LOL

Because using the remote start to turn on the A/C is a purpose for which it was never intended.......if you use the remote to lock then crank to get the A/C going and fail to hit the unlock button (because the vehicle had previously been opened before the auto-start & you are already in the vehicle) all doors will remain in the lock position. Since the key is not in the ignition, the lockout prevention feature would not be triggered.

 

Asked the boss to weigh in on this with her response: First, there's no such thing as a small 6 lb hammer, a large 6 lb sledge hammer, yes. Second, this would never happen to me because I would never be outside the vehicle with all doors closed and the engine running without at least lowering one window enough to reach a button or handle, even if the vehicle was unoccupied. Third, I'd never use the auto-start just to turn on the A/C because all steering and all other functions would remain locked. Fourth, I would have used a small 1 lb hammer to strike a sharp nail held against the glass and it would have definitely shattered. Last, Had that ever happened to me I would never have been foolish enough to tell you the real story, instead only that some passing car must have kicked up a stone that shattered the window.........And that's why I've had the same boss for over 45 years.

I was watching Dateline last night and coincedentally was a storu demonstrating how to break the window of a car was on. The trick is not to hit the middle of the window you are trying to breakout, rather one of the lower corners. They demonstrated hitting the window around the middle took several strikes and the window didn't break, but a strike to the lower corner, the window shattered on the second strike with a regular claw hammer. Using a sharp object like a nail or an emergency hammer broke the glass on the first strike.

Also just to let some folks know, not every truck has OnStar. My 2016 Custom doesn't have it. I think you might need either at least an LT/SLE or it's an option for base trucks.

No 6lb shop hammer? Guess you or your boss have never worked for a fabrication shop lol
