Had to break passenger window in an emergency

Just thought I would let everyone know that doesn't already. I knew but my wife didn't! I have a 14 CC, and my wife use the remote start to cool the truck off before going to church and loaded my son into the car seat, in doing so she sat the keys on the bag beside him and shut the door to move to the front seat and the door locked. Her house keys were locked inside attached to them :(. She called the sherries department not thinking about onstar in panic and they said they could not unlock the truck, even though there was a child in the truck.

She called me, I immediately contacted onstar and the first representative I spoke to said he could not unlock it even though there was a child locked in the vehicle on a hot summer day, in this time the truck had finally shut off. I told her to break the window on the front passenger side, and she couldn't with a small 6lb hammer. I tried contacting onstar again and a lady was in the process of unlocking it when my neighbor came over and broke the glass :(. Glad my son is fine but I think I may need to pursue this and possibly make onstar pay for the glass. Or at least get this fixed where it doesn't happen to someone else. What are your opinions I will fill in more info as this happens, or give more info as I have the chance.

You can unlock, lock, and remote start your truck from the OnStar App called remote link.

First, glad it worked out in the end but you def need to get the app on your phone. It has the remote function and you or your wife can unlock from anywhere with phone service (data). included in your free 5 years of basic service

Wonder why OnStar said they can't unlock?

I have the app gentlemen sorry I left that out I've always had trouble with it connecting to my vehicles, I will pursue it more

First and foremost it is great that nothing bad happened and your son is ok. I am curious as well why Onstar wouldn't unlock it at first and then changed their mind? If it was me personally I would just pay for the window and chalk it up as "life happens" but that is ultimately your call. Ditto on the Onstar app on your phones, it's awesome!

Good luck with whatever you decide to do.

I have purchased a window, what sucks though is as soon as I ordered it got pushed out another 4-5 days dues to stock or something. I am going to pursue the guy that would not unlock it getting a bit of a change of mind to help a future someone else out, I appreciate the kind words from everyone. I mainly plan on using the window thing to just get something done about the endangerment of a child issue.

also for future reference. My best friend has been in the auto glass business for 25 years and he said that if you have to break a window. ALWAYS break out the drivers side front glass.

It is always the cheapest out of any window on your vehicle. He said he didn't know why, but he can look up any car and any glass on that car, the drivers side front window will always be the cheapest of all windows.

I assume that you don't have an active OnStar subscription? If you don't have an active subscription, they can't do anything, even in an emergency. They can't verify that you own the vehicle unless you press the blue OnStar button to activate the service.

It sucks that you had to break a window, but at least your son is fine. I recommend becoming more familiar with the phone app as that works even without an active subscription.

Also, probably all locksmiths (pop-a-lock) and roadside assistance services (AAA or wreckers) will unlock a vehicle for free if a child is stuck inside.

I guess I'm crazy and I'm going to have to check later but I didnt think my truck would lock if it sensed the keys being in it.

I bet that was scary I'm glad it all worked out in the end and I agree it seems you chalk this one up to lesson learned. Probably a few other options you could have taken before breaking the glass.

Basic is included for 5 years. Wouldn't that cover it?

I keep a magnetic key holder with a spare key for this sole reason, worth its weight in gold!

OnStar is spotty at best, my buddy took my keys after a local river float trip, didn't come back for like 2 hours I needed my clothes to shower and change and his wonderful Verizon cell phone and Onstar use's Verizon telematics could NOT get a signal, OnStar said they can't unlock the truck, if onstar can't then your remote app will not be able to as well as its the same signal. BTW Mercedes Benz has the same issues with Verizon signals.

I cancelled Onstar biggest waste of money I ever spent almost $400 a year. Key and magnetic holder about $50.

This really is telling about how untrained gm sales people are, it is really time to force them to know the product inside and out or let them go find a new career imo! This app should of been explained to you the day you bought your truck!

For a 2016, yes. But the OP has a 2014. Only 6 months was included until 2016. 2014 & 2015 got the 100k warranty with 6 months OnStar. 2016s get 5 years of OnStar with 60k warranty.

Most car sales guys know less than you do...they just came over from the local Kia dealer...or Ford dealer...or others. I just got a 1500 Sierra coming from a Ford F150 and the keypad on Fords will be one thing i truly miss.

    • You can install tailpipes that direct the exhaust sideways vs the OEM one that goes straight back. There are several on the market, do you own research. HOWEVER, you need to make sure the Venturi vents are still intact, otherwise it will throw a engine code. There is a sensor somewhere that detects back pressure on the exhaust. And if it doesn't collect the correct metrics, it will throw the truck into limp mode.
    • "Teardown" is complete. Head surfaces are clean and ready, new intake is prepped and ready. Coolant drained and water pump is removed, radiator is removed, new hoses and pump are ready.   The replacement intake is also from a '95 (with I think 260k, the odometer said). Noticeably less pitting where it covers the rear coolant passages. I'm not sure if that's a tribute to more frequent use, more frequent coolant changes/upkeep, or if the intake was machined at some point. But it appears I found a good one.   My coolant hoses were original, and the lower hose still retained the factory spring inside. It's not really rusty, but it's got deposits all over it. Unsure if I should re-install it (will thoroughly clean it first). Someone said hose technology has gotten better since 1995 (has it?) and I don't need the spring. I think modern EPDM is what made those hoses last from 1995-2026, so it's a question of how much suction can the water pump really pull, and will it collapse the hose without a spring?   I'm stopped and waiting for parts, however.   When I first brought the truck home, the fan was intermittently hitting the radiator shroud. I could see someone had monkeyed with the shroud (put a bunch of cardboard as a spacer between the upper/lower shroud halves. Someone said the motor mounts have likely failed and the engine has sagged. I wasn't sure I believed that. The engine is really solid in its mounts: To remove the old intake I *just* nearly permanently welded to the heads with freshly cured RTV and gasket snot two weeks ago, I literally had to use the arms on my lift and a chain with a bolt attached to the intake to pull it loose. It almost picked the front of the truck off the ground before ....scuuuuuuuuuuup.... I could actually hear the gaskets tearing and it broke loose and the whole truck settled back down. Motor barely moved.   SO, those parts I'm waiting on... The lower radiator mounts/bushings had completely failed. The radiator needs to be insulated from the rad support, and the bushings help the rad stand at the correct height. The plastic "baffle" was also destroyed at some point. Someone had attached the shroud to it incorrectly, overlapping a joint that should have been underlapped, creating another suspect issue potentially causing things to hit the fan. Broken tabs, side is busted off, and it's perma-formed/bent where it was jimmied incorrectly.   The baffle? Unobtainum. Long since discontinued from GM, of course. Aftermarket/capa/chinese? Also unobtanium. In GM's infinite wisdom, it appears there are at least two different variations whether the Blazer is 2 or 4 door, and I can't yet tell if they shared the same part with the S-pickups. Plan B, if I can't find a viable used one, will be to create a bracket to re-assemble the critical joint I need to seal a gap with the shroud. But that will bug me, it won't be...perfect.   The water pump bolts appear to have been installed with...plumber's putty. I guess, sure, if it works...? I've found a few "backyard fixes" like that. Someone's been here before....   If I can't find someone to jam bamboo under my fingernails to fill my free time this week I think I'll install the driver's power window motor and replace the rear door speaker that's inop. I've got a genuine GM "9.5" ohm working replacement. Why GM used a non-standard resistance....nevermind. Of course they did, you can get more sound from a cheap factory amp that way.   And the saga goes on...
    • // Thank you, also for your  response. More information is always good. This 2013 GMC is most likely my 'forever truck"-I'm 77 and retired...and truck only has 42K on it-very clean-so I try to keep it that way.  Tks again for your  response- glenn
    • I started my install this weekend. Everything was pretty straight forward but I ran into one issue with running power through the firewall. The nipple grommet on my High Country already has a small harness running through it - has anyone else ran into this issue? And on the engine bay side, does the wire basically just penetrate the factory wiring boot? I did this on my '22 Trail Boss and it seems much easier but thats been a few years. My other thought would be possibly drilling a new hole adding a rubber grommet just to the lower left of the factory hole. Thoughts?   Has anyone used a T-harness off the Bose amp and obtained power from there? It seems a little odd that such a small amp needs 3 power leads
    • ///// Ok--Thanks for that info--I could not find yesterday when I looked for the specs on that NAPA filter what I wanted. Their website is not very user friendly. I buy all teh filters for  our three vehicles once or twice a year. Have always run NAPA Gold on everything I own....I buy it thru my Son's account for his business-which he has a Heavy Equipment repair shop-one reason he uses NAPA so much-they have such a full line of coverage for just about anything/anywhere- He gets s  good discount because of volume bought. Anyway-Thank you -Sir for your response.   glenn
