I guess I'm crazy and I'm going to have to check later but I didnt think my truck would lock if it sensed the keys being in it.

 

I bet that was scary I'm glad it all worked out in the end and I agree it seems you chalk this one up to lesson learned. Probably a few other options you could have taken before breaking the glass.

My other options were extinguished first bud, PD, Onstar, other keys on my 180 miles away, onstar again, and a hammer.

Don't think it knows if the keys are on the seat.

I'm thinking the 'lockout protection' is only when the key is in the ignition.

 

It woud be different on the vehicles/fobs that are for passive entry. (as opposed to the keyless entry on these trucks.

I'm surprised the pd wouldn't come out with a little one on board. We're a pretty busy department, but we'll open them if they're running or a child is inside.

I think there's where some confusion lies. OnStar Basic does not include operator induced unlock. Only smart phone app services.

I appreciate that info but I honestly had tried other options before calling them, like I said my app doesn't work correctly and I'm not sure why yet. I will find out though! The first rep refused to do anything, told me to call 911 and they had tried already, second rep had no questions asked, and was unlocking as it was broke. I would have paid for subscription had they asked but I wasn't going to stop and give them my info. All this besides the point I have ordered a window $210 with shipping worth my child's health any day to me!

That's the biggest stitch in my side, all our cops are great guys, I was a volunteer in at my local fire rescue until I started working around the US. I'm extremely confused as to why the FD wasn't called? I mean this is technically an entrapment of a human in a vehicle. Anyways I'm going to use my situation to make it better for others and hopefully get at least a system set up for other incidents

You can unlock, lock, and remote start your truck from the OnStar App called remote link.

does that cost money or is it free?

14-16 get basic for free for 5 years in spite of what others are saying. App is also free. Then you can lock, unlock and remote start via app in phone as much as you want.

Worth trying to get it all set up and any issues resolved before you need it for real.

I would talk to someone at your police department about it. I worked as a LEO for many years, and any call like a child locked in a car would result in someone getting dispatched. If we couldn't go due to handling emergencies, the fire department went.

You can go to setting and make it the only way to lock the truck is with the key fob. With this setting if you hit the door lock switch on the door or try and push down the door lock by the windows they pop back up. Once your in the drivers seat with the key in the ignition the door locks will work. You want lock your keys in the truck this way.

First, glad it worked out in the end but you def need to get the app on your phone. It has the remote function and you or your wife can unlock from anywhere with phone service (data). included in your free 5 years of basic service

 

Wonder why OnStar said they can't unlock?

When I first subscribed to OnStar I tested them by calling for an unlock with only the VIN without giving them the 4 digit code..gave them a hard time insisting it was an emergency.... and they refused to unlock. Tried again the next day this time giving them the VIN and code, verified my name and they unlocked within 30 sec.

That's the way I want it......no subscription, no proper ID....... no unlock.

 

Glad it worked out well but as far as the complainant taking action against OnStar for damages....good luck! Using the remote start just to turn on the A/C....really? Plenty of blame to go around.....how about misplacing the keys or misuse of the auto start by other than the manufacturer's intended use and instructions? To activate a remote start one must first lock the doors and then hold the crank key for a few seconds and then unlock the doors to gain entry. Auto start activates only if all doors are locked. Looks like the first two steps were taken to turn on the engine with auto A/C and the unlock command never given so as far as the ECU knows once all doors are closed with the key out of the ignition all the doors should remain locked to prevent access to an unattended vehicle with the engine running.

I have purchased a window, what sucks though is as soon as I ordered it got pushed out another 4-5 days dues to stock or something. I am going to pursue the guy that would not unlock it getting a bit of a change of mind to help a future someone else out, I appreciate the kind words from everyone. I mainly plan on using the window thing to just get something done about the endangerment of a child issue.

Why won't anybody take responsibilities for their own actions anymore? It's not GMs responsibility to replace the window you broke and they didn't endanger your child.

Sue happy? Your obviously a person who doesn't listen before he speaks, onstar should have unlocked it, moral of the story.

I know this is getting off topic but im interested to hear the perspectives of those who are claiming child endangerment in this case. Do any of you have familiarity with Child Endangerment laws or work for CPS, or do you watch a lot of Law and Order and are throwing around the term loosely?

This is where i disagree with you. You admitted to only having OnStar basic which doesn't include emergency support. Your fault in this was not understanding what your OnStar service included and falesly thinking if your phone app didn't work, you could just dial up OnStar, which isn't how it works. Basic services doen not include OnStar initiated unlock; highlighted in the link I posted on the last page. The reasons why OnStar couldn't and wouldn't unlock your doors are clear. There was no validated emergency and a liability factor for OnStar to unlock your door without validation. Police/Emergency responders can directly contact OnStar which validates an emergency, but they didn't respind to the situation even though your wife called 911. Jimmy Joe common guy cannot dial up OnStar without their service subscription, or everyone would bail on their subscription servies and miraculously there would be a spike in reported child lock in in GM vehicles. Lesson learned, i think you get that....it could of been way worse. I'd be damned sure the phone app was loaded and worked on both yours and your wife's phone from here on out.

      Dealer just confirmed that GM is "out of AC compressors."  Not sure if all 2019 to 2026 trucks use the same compressor, but a shortage like that is hard to believe.

      I think we're reaching the end of constant projects/work.   The water pump bolt appears to have self-sealed, as it's not leaking anymore. I'll take it, and, I'm ready should it self-unseal! I was also getting an oil leak at the front oil pan seal and timing cover and came to find a pan bolt on the corner wasn't even finger-tight. Too easy. And, it was. But, it appears tightening it has reduced a leak producing spots on the ground every time I parked, to just a weep, leaving an occasional dot on the cardboard that lives under it while parked. That's acceptable on a 30 year old engine in my book. I do hate leaks, but, replacing the pan seal is quite the job.   The rear washer line is reconnected and the sprayer works, although getting an intermittent washer fluid drip off the bottom. I think it's just residual...the reservoir filled up the channel in the rear floor and drained down into the upside-down spare tire/wheel. So there are residual puddles all over under there, will wait a few days for it to spill out and dry before I go chasing a potential leak.   The door speaker...no dice. Speaker works just fine, it's that channel in the factory amp that's gone bad. Can't win 'em all. And, whomever buys this will probably tear out the factory radio for something more modern anyway.   I put about 110 miles on it yesterday. Put a lot of wind and heat into it with some mountain driving. Still runs great. Near the top of the pass I got off on a gravel side road and put about 10 miles on with 4hi engaged. Works great.   If ya squint, she's mint! God I wish these were still in production. I can see why they're not. They're rudimentary bordering on agricultural. They began life as a pickup truck and then modern society demanded the rear be enclosed for kids and crap. They're still a pickup underneath, and that gives them lots of ride character, sway and bounce and bump steer. They're alive on the road, and, at least for purposes of nostalgia, it makes driving one a lot of fun.   The Check Engine light did come back on the pass, P0134 for the upstream O2 sensor dropping out. Putting heat into the exhaust causes it after about 10-15 seconds of increased load at higher RPM. The downstream sensor is completely mangled (someone clearly had a rough time removing it, but they didn't replace it?) so I'll just put two in it. For what, mostly to cure the CEL, I can tell the cat is damaged. It's not plugged or fractured, but it's not catalyzing. There's some guilt in not fixing it, but at a cost of $500+, the truck just won't get driven much under my watch. I dislike the smell...running the truck in the shop even with both doors open and the overhead fans blasting, I still reek of pre-cat exhaust. Sticks to clothing and everything else.   Window motor (I'm dreading this), and tires, and that should be about it. 50/50 on Starfire Solarus H/T's, or spending $20 more per tire and going with Cooper Discoverer RT's. I like the look of the RT's a lot more, but is it worth it? I've got a really good (just very old) Toyo Open Country XTX on there now and I like it.

      From what I've seen, they "could" sell the switch but designed the assembly such that the switch can't be readily removed and replaced without removing a plastic locating pin.  Sure appears aimed at forcing the end user to purchase a $900 shifter assembly instead of a $20 switch.  Thankfully I still have some extended warranty left...  this one has had warranty repairs almost every 5K miles from the day I bought it.

      I'm well aware of the typical bathtub failure curve, but plotted, this truck has been more like an elevated straight line.  It started days off the lot with misfires that GM couldn't solve for almost 2 years, and steadily continued over the last 5 years with repeat replacements of wiring harnesses, camera modules, cameras, parking sensors, head unit, rear windows, rear leaf springs and bushings, lower control arms, a radiator, and now an ac compressor and a column shift assembly.
