I didn't realize a simple question about personal experiences with two truck engines would inspire so much emotion lol

I believe you but neither of these 5.3s get over 15 average one is leveled with 33s other is stock. I can get 16 if I'm not pulling my boat. IDK if they drive like they stole it or what. I will say I'm a conservative driver 80% of the time.

You can also go to the MPG thread many people are claiming good numbers, better than 5.3s.

But it sounds to me the OP would be more than happy with a 6.2 but if he is questioning it he will always wonder if he gets a 5.3.

Wow, I would be pretty sad if I was getting under 17 with my current setup. My last truck got 12 so I can believe a lower MPG if you keep the V8 pumping the whole time.

I agree the OP would be at least as happy in a 6.2L, just think saying that the 6.2L gets better mileage than the 5.3L all else equal is deceiving (which is what you imply when you say compared against 3 different trucks). Similar to that cam guy claiming he said it COULD ping with under 91 octane but implying it always does when he said he test drove 6 trucks over 2 model years and they ALL pinged. Simple inference based on an implication that is deceiving.

It does every time someone ask this. My last piece of advice. If you even have the slightest chance you would regret about not getting it then get it.

I believe your exact quote is you test drove 6 different 5.3s and they all ping. If the 5.3 can ping on 87 octane, GM would not recommend it for the minimum octane level fuel. I believe we already discussed this in another thread or do you need mto go grab your exact quote so you can deny it?

To the OP I apologize in advance.

Never said the 5.3 is a horrible engine, that's twice you mis-quoted me nor can you comprehend a sentence. I will forget more than you will ever know about automotive anything.

I said the 5.3 can ping on 87 octane, and it did for me. again another mis-quote.

2nd, I told you I need a 5.3 engine to data log, I will trust my data log info.. via HP Tuners over hot air. Once I do find someone with a 5.3 and they allow me to data log a few pulls I will share them. Until then I will there's no point, you'll quote owners manual about the 6.2 fuel requirements when were are discussing 5.3L, octane and ping. I told you my dealer put 87 octane in my truck when new, as most dealers fuel the truck for the customer purchase, and I ran out the tank on 87 octane, it was awful.

Can you even view HP Tuners bin/log files?

I average 18 mpgs in the summer around town. You said $14/wk is 2 whoppers. Umm ok but i personally don't eat 2 Whoppers a week. When the price of gas goes back up, those 2 Whoppers will be more like 4. It's all perspective and what people choose to spend or waste their money on. Some people don't want to spent more money on gas then they have to so they can enjoy an extra Whopper a week or a Starbucks coffee or something more pressing, like their family. How people spend money is unique to each person and not rationalized as simple as you try to make it.

Yes I did say that I drove 6 different 5.3's over the years of 2014-2015 that I was able to get to ping on 87 octane. I have a buddy that's service manager at my local dealer, now sadly hes gone. Wow you found out how to quote me correctly, good job. So what your saying is that there is no way a 5.3 11.0 CR DI engine will ever ping on 87 octane?

I told you I would be willing to post the data if I can get some data, more than what you've offered.

I had a 2014 - 5.3

Now have a 2016 - 6.2

Both trucks were exact same double cab, z71,etc - only thing different was the color.

The new 6.2 get better MPG when compared to the 5.3 - and I ran premium gas in the old 5.3 like I do in the 6.2

personally I don't really care about MPG.. but I'm just saying..

I said I looked but didn't find it haha

Forgive me. I'm a newbie :)

Now that you've had both.. Was it worth upgrading to the 6.2?

Easy with the attitude hero, you were the one who threw out the comments. Either prove what you you say, or all you're doing is spewing conjecture and BS. I called you on it, Havvkeye called you on it. My facts are i own a 5.3 that gets filled with nothing but 85 octane with the occassional e85, no pings....ever in 3 years! If you have real data, post it up.

You'll like the 6.2. Here's another test, in my 3 years on this board, i haven't seen many if any who trade down from a 6.2 to a 5.3, but i've seen a lot trade up from a 5.3.

Pending a successful test drive. I think my decision is made

A couple thoughts - maybe three.

For Tyler and Capt, this obviously was an interesting discussion by virtue of three pages of responses. I note yours were on the second page. So you at least followed that far.

Where do people live where they sell Whoppers for $7 !?!

I like my 5.3. Does anything this old guy wants to do. Thrilled with the mpg too. Just sayin'.

    • Getting greedy...   The AC pump has been replaced at least once per service records, and it's been recharged twice since 2018 or so, in approximately 2 year intervals between those charges.   It was done at the same shop...clearly they were enjoying the revenue of recharging the system periodically versus actually tracking down and fixing the leak. I learned that the owner was 88 years old when she passed in 2023, so maybe they assumed only a temporary fix was needed anyway.   The system is basically empty now, the compressor spins freely, so I'm guessing it "just needs a recharge".   I vacuumed it down, and it has basically held overnight. Doesn't appear to leak under vacuum, check! So it must leak under pressure. I don't have a way to pressurize the system and pressurizing it with shop air wouldn't be great for the air dryer (which is probably toast anyway?)   The dryer (accumulator? I'm not an AC expert) has a Schrader valve, but the high side has an old ball-type valve, which are notorious for leaking. It's clearly had schmutz blown out of it at one point because the line/area next to the valve is coated old black crud, which I assume is AC refrigerant residue/oil, or maybe even dirty dye. I think I'll roll the dice and replace the valves. I have a black light around here somewhere so I'll find it and shine it around the engine bay in the dark to see if there's any dye.   I can't think of another way to track down the leak other than injecting some dye (if it doesn't have any) and having it charged up. We can't buy R134a off the shelf here anymore, so I'll run it up to Jiffy Lube and have them do it. I think I have a coupon. At the very least, the charge should last long enough for a year or two, according to history. I think this truck will be long gone by then. But cold AC is a selling point.
    • Got the truck back today.  Called them yesterday to get an update, and miraculously my truck is finished?!?! The $13k out the door was complete bullshit!  Ended up being over $14k.  They added some bullshit service bulletin that I cant even find, where they replaced my radiator without telling me or asking me, and charging me for it.  Need to do more research into it, cause they leaked the first delivered radiator was ran over by FedEX.  Sounds like bullshit to me. 2.5 Months for an engine swap, which ended up being remanufactured, not new; ****ing ridiculous.  Brakes are squishy as hell, not sure if its from sitting.  Will give a couple days to see it that figures it self out.  GAVE IT BACK TO ME WITH 1 GALLON OF GAS!  Just filled the tank the day before drop off, more bullshit.  My dash cam SD card was formatted, not really much I can do about that. 3 year, 100k GM warranty at least.  Time to sell it and say **** off to GM.  Bad experience.  Cant wait for the survey email to come through.  Overpriced Raptor R, here I come!
    • If I forget the phone in the truck, and forget the truck in the phone, and reconnect.  It works great for the day.  Truck sits overnight, and the next day is a no go.  It will connect Android Auto via usb cable, but not bluetooth.   Ive tried Everything in this thread so far, and nothing works for more than a day.   I think I might have to go to the dealer and have them flash the pcm.   thanks for all the suggestions guys. 👍
    • 2022 2500HD Crew Z71 Duramax single alternator.  Recently had the primary (water pump / fan) belt tensioner pulley bearing to fail while hundreds of miles from home of course the plastic pulley melted and belt shredded which took out some wiring. Found a replacement tensioner assembly and belt to continue now would like to find a replacement for just the pulley and bearing to have a spare assembly in case of a repeat, the rest of the tensioner is fine. Has anybody here found a correct replacement part for just the pulley and bearing? Any help is appreciated.
    • +1 for the 3.0   Perfect for 1500 pickup towing duties.   Perfect engine for a 1500 pickup period. Huge torque at stunningly low RPM makes it feel a lot lighter than it is. The fuel mileage is insane for a tall and heavy 1500... 30+ on the highway. Mid 20's around town.   It's probably not perfect if you bought a 6.2 for the braaaaaaapppppp V8 noises and wrapping it out to 6k. The LZ0 acts and sounds like a small turbo diesel and there's nothing you can do to make a small turbo diesel sound like a big one, and you can't make an inline diesel sound like a V8 diesel/big Duramax. It's a different driving experience altogether.   Drive one, I think you'll like it, though...
