Help! Speed issues...

I own a 2015 GMC Sierra 1500.

Love it, 3rd one.

Long story short. All my trucks have a governor at 98MPH. Great.

Full disclosure. I put on some (see pic) aftermarket rims and tires and they were dialed in by discount tires for the sensors and what not. 99.9% of the time I can go faster than 82MPH. Ive had an issue of my truck suddenly shutting down or not allowing me to go faster than 82MPH just like a normal governor. No error codes, nothing. Ive taken it in three times to the dealer. They were never able to replicate the issue and were able to get it past 82MPH.

Fast forward to today. It started to stick again so I take it quickly back to the dealer. They see the issue. Now they tell me that 82PMH is actually the limit of the truck and now question my aftermarket tires and rims.

Mind you, I've taken the truck with this fact issue once before and twice after putting aftermarket rims and times on the truck. I call BS and they dispute it. Says its a safety feature. When I mention that this issue only happens once every two months maybe and they truck always goes past 82MPH, he didn't know what to say and only would quote what their main service tech said.

So my question, is 82MPH normal and I'm an idiot? I wouldve never bought a truck that limits at 82PMH.

If it is 82MPH, have they been knowingly letting me drive an unsafe truck for a year clearly checking it 3 times and not being able to duplicate the 82MPH limiter?

They are calling me tomorrow. Id love to hear anyones feedback!!

On Waze, I'm off maybe 1-2 MPH. Basically right on and I pass cops on my commute at 80MPH every day along with the rest of traffic. No issues.

I've never heard of this problem. I have a 2015 with oversized off road tires on 20X10 inch wheels. No problem running 85-90 mph with more throttle left over.

The limiter is 98 mph ?....I've had my '15 Sierra at 92 mph while towing (short burst), and it felt like it had quite a bit more left ??....I would of been shocked if it fell on it's face at 98 mph....good to know.....82 mph seems too low.

That's what they're telling me at the dealer and the factory is backing them up. I have never heard of a vehicle coming stock stopping at 82mph. It has shut down at 98 before. I get that. Not 82mph.

99.9% of the time the limiter is at 98 (I'm guessing) but once in a while the limiter kicks in at 82mph. I don't get it. They're saying its normal for safety however if it was for safety then why does it go over 82 the other 99% of the time? Am I driving an unsafe vehicle? Is it supposed to be stopping at 82 and allowing me to go over?

I think it's a load of BS but don't know for sure. That's why I'm looking for additional answers.

Those speed limiters kick in without much warning. Years ago I drove through Montana in a rental Ford Escort and at that time there was no daytime speed limit in Montana for cars and light trucks. The speed limiter on that Escort kicked in at 110 MPH indicated every time. It kicked in suddenly just as I reached 110 MPH indicated. I was able to comfortably cruise at about 108 MPH indicated without the limiter kicking in.

They are just telling you the factory is backing them up.

There are enough 80mph posted speed interstate locations that there is no way GM would build/sell a vehicle with an 82mph speed limiter. Especially a pickup - since pickups are such a large percentage of sales in the west where these speeds are most common.

Thanks, it really strange. If I was to get killed going over the 82MPH on a 80PMH road would they be at fault because they knowingly serviced the truck three times and failed to mention that I was driving an unsafe vehicle? I failed to mention that the cruise control wouldnt work during these limitations.

Here is a pic from my 2015 using EFILive. The 82 is there. Mine is controlled by the BCM ( the "Other Module" on the top) and it limits at 98mph.

Okay, so my truck and others should be shutting down at 82? If thats the case then why is it allowed to go 90MPH+ the other 99% of the time. Is my safety in jeopardy?

I don't think your truck should shut down at 82mph. I should of added this last night. The 82 is the min speed for the speed limiter to become active. Some of the SUVs have a valet mode that allows the user to change the speed limiter through settings (keep your kids or parking guy from going too fast). Have you looked to see if you have that setting? I didn't think the pickups had it, but maybe yours does. I think if you can change that other mod to ECM it will fix your problem.
