16 Free oil change tire rotation question

So on my 16 it lists 2 free oil change and tire rotations. So the manual says 7,500 miles for the tire rotation, but the computer will tell you when to change the oil which could be more than 7,500 miles. So do you just bring it in for the rotation at 7,500 miles and tell them to change the oil regardless of the computer percent, or will they not change the oil till the computer says so forcing you to bring it back for 2 visits?

It depends on the dealer. One dealer told me they will only change it when it shows 10% remaining. Another dealer told, they are my oil changes/rotations, and to use them as often as I would like.

When they launched the maintenance program, there was a 20% or lower OLM requirement for it. They then dropped the requirement because they had many dealers bring to their attention that many customers don't always go by the OLM. The dealer can only recommend that you go by the OLM, but if you want it changed at 4,000, 5,000, 6,000, they are not supposed to deny your usage of the free maintenance.

I skip both. Id rather not wait until 7500+ miles for an oil change. You should see what it looks like after 500-1000K miles

I had them change mine at about 2000 miles, they told me it was torso on but they did it anyway. Now my rotate/oil changes are skewed.

Thanks. I just checked my DIC and says I am 85% after 1,200 miles, so that should work out to an oil change right around the 7,500 mark anyway. What will really screw me up is if I get a second set of rims for winter tires. Then basically lose the value of my free rotation, because i wont need it then, b/c the tires would get rotated when I switch rims in my driveway.

I don't think I want to run my 22 inch black rims in the snow and salt for 4 months.

i personally go 5,000 between oil changes and tire rotations. Going by the oil life monitor will depend on your driving ( lots of city, lots of highway, or a combination of both). I personally drive mainly highway and after 5,00 miles my olm was at 45%.

For my 2016 GMC Sierra (1500) the dealer told me I have to use "full" synthetic oil and not like my 2014 Chevy Silverado (1500) where the dealership only recommended semi synthetic oil. The GMC dealership would cover the full synthetic under the free first two oil changes for the 2016. What is everyone doing for their free oil changes?

I change at OLM 15% personally. But i've leased my last 4 cars, and while I'm responsible, care for the vehicles as my own, and wish it to be a good purchase for the next person I don't get to anal because, it's a lease.

Also, like everything in this world these days you have to really research on your own. It's a shame you can't trust the 'experts'. I've know so many people given incorrect info that cost them so much money with their car, house, roof, furnace, water tank, on and on and on.

Per the manual, "Ask for and use engine oils that meet the dexos1™ specification" - Dexos1 spec is not full syn by default, there are many blend oils that meet the spec. (http://www.centerforqa.com/dexos-brand1/) - Use SAE 0W-20 viscosity grade for the 5.3L and 6.2L V8 engines. Use SAE 5W-30 viscosity grade for the 4.3L V6, and 6.0L V8 engines.

I'd find who you spoke with, walk over together to the service manager, open the manual and call them out. It's their duty to be educated on the topic. Of course, you should always check your manual first for anything.

Edited for rage and data accuracy.

oil change / tire rotation - 5% - 10% - Mobil 1 oil / gm filter

I think it depends on the dealer. I have 4,000 miles on my truck and the computer is saying 49% remaining. I just called them Thursday to set up an appointment for a oil change this Tuesday , cause I want that original oil out of there and want a full synthetic in it. They asked me if I wanted a tire rotation as well, as they said they do it between 5000-7000 miles. Or every oil change. I told them yes, do the tire rotation as I suspect the next oil change won't be until about 10,000 miles.

I would dump the factory fill at 500 to 1000 miles and then do whatever you are comfortable with thereafter. Lots of trucks go with the factory oil for a full cycle though too... I just have analyzed it and it's heavy on the metals so I don't. ..

Engineer I used to work with ran mobile 1 synthetic extended in his minivan and did 50k miles oil changes. Last I heard he was over 300k miles and had only done 6 oil changes. He figured if he made it to 200k miles it would be cheaper to replace the engine than replace the oil every 3k miles.

Must have been an electrical engineer

    • Length/amount of data capture will be important to consider, sifting through 5 minutes of a data log can be enormous when it is stored in milliseconds. Being able to find the 'event' let alone decipher it.   Presumably the driver would notice something and hit a button to capture the 'window' of data. That window has to be large enough for the operator to recognize the event and react accordingly.    The data has to be able to be retrieved easily.   The data has to be able to be understood. Which is the biggest challenge, dealer techs won't even know what most of it is and would likely not even look at it if an owner brought it to them. Meaning the owner, the least educated/qualified, trying to understand it.    How will the data be presented? Could specific PIDs be selected and a timelapse graph be watched? How will a specific value be noted as abnormal? Additionally, a good data logger would be able to 'learn' normal values for a specific vehicle and flag abnormalities automatically. It could in theory watch parameters degrade over time and suggest maintenance as needed. (If the MAF reading begins tapering off for a given set of other readings - MAP, throttle position, Ambient, etc.. a flag to check air filter.) With the amount of data available, a device (really the vehicle rather than an additional accessory) should be able to do more than issue a DTC. It should be able to run the full diagnostic suite automatically and present a solution rather than a code. (It's not the 90's anymore). The technology is available for the vehicle to not just say "P0087", it should know low fuel pressure, check other PIDs to narrow down the problem itself, and determine if it is a lift pump, high pressure pump, regulator, leak in the fuel line, clogged filter, etc. Even if it can't narrow it down, it should be able to guide the user to the likely problems.   This would be a major problem for dealer service departments, which are the manufacturers customers it is in their collective best interest to NOT have this available to the consumer.   Further, if the owner is going to be the primary consumer of the data, it's got to be at a consumer price point vs. dealer only specialty tool price.   This group is more 'involved' in their vehicle than general public/consumer and will have knowledge, experience, needs and desires that are quite different from the market at large.
    • I put the prof up. If you read what I posted. You can see that housing, cars and income are in line with the era we were talking about. It’s harder in some places easier in others. Let’s agree to disagree and put this back on track, OK? We both are pretty stubborn and hard headed. But I bring receipts. If you wish I will not respond to you in the future.
    • Lets see if I can sum up two pages of nothing useful.    You want to refute your own governments data of the "Purchasing Power" Index FOR THE ENTIRE USA and its territories replacing it with the experience of a single family and its business and label that reality?  Then pound on that for a week hoping it will find traction?    Stan, I've told you several times. I don't do irrational. There are more people in the USA than your family.    I'm pretty sure this tread is so blown up. I'll give you a few days or months if need be to post yourself silent then I'll see if I can find enough parts of the train to reassemble it.
    • Facebook groups hate VSE, poor customer service; their responses to criticisms are pretty poor for a reputable company. I'm not a customer, haven't bought anything from them, but how they handle themselves on social media is a definite "No" for me.
    • $10,000 for a transmission?   Pretty sure I could buy all the parts, tools, and education to rebuild it myself for a quarter of that amount.   or swap it out with a new one...
