6.2L 8 spd 3.23 or 5.3 8 spd NHT?

Unfortunately, I don't see your dream truck coming back, you needed to get the 3.73 rear end in your 14' model instead of the one you got.

Back in 14 it also came with the small mirrors that you like.

Sidhead700, you are correct, I was speaking hypothetically about the combo that are offered and what would be cool. too get way off of the original topic, my ream trucks would actually be both standard cabs, short boxes, 2 wheel drives. the first a 1966 c10 with the engine and trans that I have now and a 1972 Cheyenne super with the 402 big block. and back to the original topic, there is no substitute for the bigger engines when it comes to towing.

My previous truck was a 15 6.2 8 spd 3.23.

It would pull just as well as the current 5.3 8 spd 3.42.

One of the reasons I changed was to get the tow mirrors, -- another was that I discovered that every time I put high test in the 6.2 the extra cost drove me crazy. (I know, but I'm a cheap about some things...)

The 3.23 8 speed would be comparable to the 3.42 6 speed.

I'd get the 6.2 3.42 8 speed....

Lots of people are getting 21+ mpg with that combo( I don't see the 3.23 doing any better) and now you have the right power combination for the 10 times a year.

Plus you'll like the better visibility tow mirrors for the trailer....

The 3.23 8 speed would be comparable to the 3.42 6 speed.

I'd get the 6.2 3.42 8 speed....

6.2 3.23 8SPD IS DA BOMB ON GAS MILEAGE. Wanted you to SEE it doing better LOL

That certainly is the bomb!

I know that I can't do that good, but I also know that I don't do as good as alot of people same vehicle vs. same vehicle, as I drive with a heavier foot, lol.

Just curious if you have hand calculated your mileage too, as I have heard some people say on here that there d.i.c. is very accurate to there hand calculated mileage, and others have said there computers are off by a couple mpg.

To answer the OPs question.IMO if only towing a few times a year there is no way that I would put up with the NHT ugly mirrors. 6.2 3.23 8spd all the way for me man. Well capable of towing a few times a year and the remainder of the time totally exhilarating to drive around.

On the mileage thing I did make a couple of changes from stock that probably have affected the mileage a bit. Never off over 1/2mpg on hand calcs.

1. GM Borla Catback dual exhaust system

2. Hypertech 2.0 part 2000 "tuned"

3. Peragon bedcover (I love the color match)

4. I use 35psi front and 32psi for rear tires these are the stock 20" SRA's (soon to be replaced with Michelins)

5. I am thinking about ordering a Cold Air Induction Intake, it is so cool looking with the clear top cover and supposed to help a bit on power and mileage.

Does anyone have a experience with how much parts and labor is to change our gearing and a reflash is needed ?

3.08 (9.5") and 3.23 (9.76") use the same case. To go with anymore gear, you need to purchase new cases (front and rear). This is where it gets expensive. If the truck came with 3.42's, it's an easy swap to go to 4.10's (if you have a 9.5") and 3.73's (if you have the 9.76") using OEM parts.

I'm guessing by your name you snowmobile, so from one snowmobiler to another... opt for the 6.2L 8spd, NHT or not, you won't regret. I'd go with NHT just for the mirrors, the visibility is amazing, I now dislike driving my parents car etc because I really have to move around physically to make sure the blind spot is clear for a lane change etc haha.

I can vouch for MPG that MyFavTruck is getting. Mine is currently totally stock (tires, stance, performance, etc...) so nothing is impacting my MPG one way or another. My DIC appears to read between .5 to 1MPG high. Generally I average 17-18mpg in the suburban areas. Highway at 74-75 I will get 20-21mpg. Recently I was on a 30 mile stretch of mostly flat 55mph road. I set the cruise at 60mph and it stayed in 4 banger mode a vast majority of the time and DIC was reading 25-26mpg, so I would bet money I was getting at least 24mpg.

One more "MPG Story" I took this thing from MI to CO and back over the summer with my gf and a bed full of stuff, averaged 19.9 on the DIC over 3,004 miles. Goin thru Nebraska & WY we were rockin 80-85 a lot, my gf even was doing 90 sometimes. I was very impressed with the overall mileage.

But, enough about MPG because thats only one of the many good things with the 6.2, the point is, the 6.2L is worth the upgrade if you are comfortable financially with the upcharge.

One other thing, my previous tow vehicle was the 02 Av with 5.3L 3.73 in my avatar pic, pulling a 2 place enclosed it used to downshift to 3rd a lot and even 2nd sometimes while trailing north. Obviously this was older technology and it needed the high Rs to stay in the powerband, but this new truck, 8th gear on the same roads pullin the same trailer on the same hills at the same speeds. The amount of torque this engine puts out in the low RPMs is quite impressive for a gaser imo.

Skidoo Nick, I agree with you, and I already have 17 6.2 nht. And I love it. I came from an 03 avalanche with the 3.73 so I know exactly which hills you're talking about lol.

I'm pulling an inline trailer so it's a pretty good difference with the power and mirrors and everything compared to the old one.

By the way i wasn't the OP, I was giving him my opinion also.

Wow really? 21 w/6.2 and NHT?

That's about what I pull down with my 5.3 non-NHT. I thought everybody said the 6.2 mileage sucked?

They really are awesome. I've gotten 22-23 mpg on long trips multiple times.

Yep, I would say most of the people I talk to with the, 6.2 are all over 20mpg on the highway, several of them 22+

Only downside is you are putting in premium instead of 87 on a 5.3

But i wouldn't change it, way nicer than a 5.3 imho
