Forgot how bad V-4 mode is

I unplugged the Range to have some work done at the dealer and let it build some history of the AFM. I dont like the way it runs with the AFM engaged. Hesitation when slight acceleration is needed and the 8 speed trans shifts like a pos. This is the first GM gasser I have had since AFM came along and Im not a big fan of the system. I wont be getting rid of the LML any time soon though. With the mods I have in the works for my truck there will be no return to stock programming or unplugging the Range and quite frankly, I cant wait until I never see V-4 again. I read on the forum about how people hate there transmission shifts and hunting for gears, if they would try turning off the AFM, I think they would be much happier with there trucks.

Sorry didn't mean to get on the soap box, but I wanted to let those that haven't tried deactivating AFM know how much of a difference it makes. At least it does in my truck. Go from this is a god awful truck to aaahhhhh man what a nice truck in one plug in, lol. To each his own but I recommend trying it and if you dont agree, no harm done, unplug and enjoy your 4 banger.

I think a lot of your problem is the 8 speed, not really the AFM. I can't remember where I had any problem with the AFM. The only time I even had any trouble with the 6 speed was the first 2-3,000 miles when it was in "learn mode". Since then it's been smooth as butter and the shifts between V4 and V8 are also smooth. Doesn't seem to hesitate much going from V4 to V8 when power is instantly needed.

Hey I have to ask, I have the 4.3L and I've tried to notice when my car goes into 4 cylinder mode, and I rarely see it go there. Do the v8s constantly drop? I only really see it when I'm on the highway and I have the cruise set and I'm going on very flat or downhill. It almost seems like it stays out of 4 mode to keep it from revving higher and sounding underpowered.

I agree. I bought a 2016 with 50 miles on it and before 500 I tuned it. It's awesome now. 0 issues

With my 5.3 it doesn't do it on the interstate that much. It usually goes into V4 on the highway. So sometimes I actually prefer to go a few more miles to go 50-60 ona highway instead of 75 on the interstate because the MPGs might be a bit better. In town it might go into V4 but not for long.

5.3 6 speed. Those trannys clunk on stock software. I'm diablew tuned. 87 octane. Fuel milage went up after tuning and turning off v4 by 4mpg on highway and 2 to 3 in town my best is 27.4 mpg on turnpike

I like the AFM and Im not sure I blame it for the occasional funky shifts.I guess Id need to run in manual mode to know for sure to lock out the AFM.

I wish there was a way to log how long AFM is activated on my drive to work with an app like Torque, maybe it's possible and im not aware. It's pretty easy to get mine into v4 and keep it in v4, kinda like a Game to me lol.

My '11 6.2 tip in hesitation from AFM was much more dramatic than my '17

Tune made my '11a fantastic operating vehicle.

Anxious to have the '17 done

My truck goes into and out of V4 mode so smoothly you wouldn't know it without the DIC. Also have no issues with heavy shifting. I think what a lot of people think is transmission clunks is the Eaton locker in the rear end. It's a mechanically locking rear and the Eaton engages and disengaged with authority.

Same here, no issue with AFM, mine rarely if ever engages when accelerating. It only drops to V4 when coasting or with cruise control engaged. Anytime there is an increase in engine load, it goes back to V8.

Haha yeah that's it. These trucks shift shitty from factory and I have driven a few. But to each his own. Mine shifts great now though. I think if you haven't tuned you wouldn't know what I'm even talking about
