Auto vs 2H Settings...

I leave it in 2 wheel drive but even when it's dry and I'm making that left turn out of Jet's Pizza across oncoming traffic and need to merge into the 55mph flow of traffic, I will switch to 4H so I slingshot into position without spinning the tires, then flip it back to 2 wheel drive as normal, but I've never really ever used auto except when driving on snow covered roads.

Situations like that is perfect for the auto function. I would not use 4hi in the dry personally.

 

One would think there would be a delay in using an "auto" function, but there's no delay at all. It activate so fast and seamlessly that I can't even tell the difference between 4hi and auto.

I know....no one is biting. The last time this topic came up, it went from a harmless 4wd question to people questioning each others driving abilities. It's a slow day...i could use some entertainment.

Lol...so has what tires can fit? When should i change my oil? What oil is best? And what's better 5.3 or 6.2....it doesn't stopmsome people.

I would not ever do that man, 4 high is not for dry pavement, Auto would be OK for this situation but, you're really beating on that T-case by running 4 high or low on dry pavement.

I think the tires take the brunt of any wear for that 1/10th of a mile or so, besides, the few times I had it in Auto while plowing snow, I got that "clunk" when 4wd grabbed - I was on slick snow or ice when that happened so no big deal, but it woke me up each time enough for me to take it out of auto. I would not want to experience that clunk on dry pavement pulling into traffic at WOT, that would be almost like doing a neutral slam.

 

Auto has worked fine for me going a constant speed on snow covered roads, which is about the only time I ever use it.

 

I should add that in +30,000 miles, I might have done that maybe 4 or 5 times and am quick to switch back to 2 wheel drive as soon as I get out of the turn because I don't want to break the thing. I always keep it in 2wd.

Guys that run 10's in the 1/4 mile use auto to launch, i think it's pretty stout

 

It's possible it's not your 4wd that's clunking or your truck has a problem, my own truck and seamingly everybody elses does not do that.

there is no harm in leaving it in AUTO. The system will only send power to the wheels that spin so you won't damage the drivetrain on dry pavement like you will with 4High or 4Low.

umm, I don't think so, Tim.

 

The auto system can't send power to specific wheels. It only senses slipping of the rear and and then engages the front axle so you temporarily have 4wd. It would cause excessive wear on the system and tires to be having it shift in and out of 4wd continuously. That is why an intelligent driver can decide if the conditions require 4wd or 2wd and select the range accordingly. But you do whatever you want with your truck. leave it in auto all the time "because you can".

I was driving to work this morning in auto4, it has been ugly and rainy in central Texas. I barely feel the front tires kicking in when the rear tires break traction. It works great for me and I love it. I was driving around in 2wd the other rainy day and from a stop turning at an intersection my truck was trying to slide around. The traction control was doing its job but the tires were breaking traction pretty easy. I didn't last long in 2wd, so input it in auto4 and just forgot about it on my drive home. I don't get speeding tickets or into accidents, so go ahead and criticize my driving if you want but I paid for the truck and love it's features.

    • No I didn’t watch a video of a person who analyzes oil for a living explain general oil usage. For clarity I did ask my brothers one who runs our equipment business. The other who runs our old ROW business about oil usage. Nothing has changed since I retired. Their personal vehicles or work vehicles use no oil. Not enough to see on the oil checking device. Then I pondered. I like to ponder. In this extended oil changing world with oil change countdowns or lights. If engines used say a qt every 2500 miles or up to even 4000 miles. With oil changes reaching as high as 15000 miles. Normal for most people is eight to ten. Vehicles should potentially be seizing up all over the place. Especially in hilly terrain. Just how many people actually check their oil? Maybe 10 percent. Those are the people that probably change their oil early. I like to research used car listings. I have five favorite dealers I check. They all list carfax with their listing. It’s rare to see vehicles with anything but extended oil changes. Transmission service, forget about it. I’ve seen Honda and Toyota certified vehicles up to 100K miles and ten years old. With nothing but normal maintenance. Isn’t nice we all have different experiences and believe our way is the best. You certainly get backup for whatever you believe. Life would be boring otherwise.
    • Interesting rumor. Dealers near me have been tight-lipped so far, but if this reveal actually happens next week, I'm really hoping they finally give the HD a proper interior overhaul. The competition has been eating their lunch in the cabin department for a while now.
    • There are a few good takeaways in that video that pertain to this thread, certainly the possibility of the oil control rings having buildup, the fuel injectors and how clean or not that they are ending up affecting the pistons rings carbon buildup, and the fact that its normal up to a point for a given engine to use some oil, and that the oil quality that is being utilized is part of that ring clogging up issue as well.   I was talking with a neighbor yesterday who has a baby LZ0 duramax and he had bought it slightly used but it does consume some oil and he has switched over to 5W-30 Euro spec oil and in this case that never made a difference in consumption over the factory 0W-20 recommendation. He finds it uses a quart in about 3500 miles and as he goes a ways over that distance he adds oil to full and goes another 1000 miles or so and then changes oil and is typically at 40% or so left on the oil monitor at that point with his use case of quite a lot of highway miles and more limited in short run use. I don't know what other LZ0 engines are doing for oil consumption but that is what his is doing.

    • Ok well I guess Lake disagrees with me on a few points. I call oil consumption pretty basic. Rudimentary. He calls it "really complicated." I think 1qt consumed in 3k miles is a lot. He says that's normal. In 22 minutes, he'll use his natural talent to explain oil consumption to anyone watching this video. He covers everything from obvious engine damage to how normally functioning healthy engines consume oil by design. Lake explicitly states how you drive will impact oil consumption.   Shut up and watch:
