So I finally grew enough balls to bake my headlights...

Ok . Do u remove the original seal before applying the new one ? And if u can more pics of ur light how the look finish for some reason I can't see them . They look really small .

Click on the pics and it will open them in imageshack. They were too big to upload. If you can't see them send me a PM with your email and I can send you the pics.

 

I did not remove the previous sealant. Some of it came out when I was prying out the lense, but otherwise I didn't remove it. the retro rubber becomes super gooey and fills in all the gaps when you squish the lense back into the housing.

Baked my headlights and removed the orange reflector and painted the housing black. It took a lot of effort, but I'm really happy with how it turned out. Sorry for the dirty truck and the crappy pic

Looks good man! I've been wanting to do mine with FXRs and to add halo rings and clear the signals.

First let me say up front that I am old. 53 in fact. I don't get the whole bake your headlights in the oven fad!?!? Never heard of it til now. Does it darken them or what? And....why do you want dark lenses reducing your vision at night? Where I live the deer are thick as phiuck! I've hit one on a bike and one last fall in my car. Not to mention coyotes, drunken idiots and other creatures. Don't get me wrong. I have no problem with anyone doing whatever they want to their vehicle. I don't get it and there is no need that I do get it. Please enlighten me on this oven baking thing you speak of

The baking is just to soften the glue to be able to remove the headlight lense. Then you can paint the chrome housing inside. I did it cuz the chrome lights looked funny on my black truck. It was stricktly a cosmetic thing. As for light output, our trucks use projectors and do not use the housings to project the light. Therefor painting the housings does not change the light output. Removing the turn signal lense does reduce the turn signal output, but I bought REALLY bright LED bulbs and they can be seen just fine. Hope that answers your question. :)

Haha, I probably would have stressed less about breaking them if I was baked...but you gotta move quick to get the lense off before it hardens. So probably wouldn't be a good idea.

Good job on them. I am in the process of doing a couple sets of 2016 SLE's and redoing my original 2014 Denali lights. They will be for sale by January.

Did this back in my Civic days with a set of halo headlights that were chrome and I painted black. This was before the headlight retro fad was as big as it was so my supplies were limited which proved to be my downfall with resealing. Lots of fog and later water etching in the headlight, likely wasn't sealed 100%.

 

Yours look great and clearly you followed the right steps. Good on you man!

Alright cool. I'll try and do this to my old ones. What paint did you use and will it hold up?

 

I wish there was someone who did this for a living I could just send them too lol

I used krylon fusion. I think it's all in the prep..I scuffed the surface and used adhesion promoter.

Have any output shots? Wondering how much visibility is cut down by painting the reflectors. The signal bulbs of course because you have a projector.

      It wouldn’t have happened if the government hadn’t mandated outrageous fuel mileage standards. It does very little for the consumer. It adds cost. Back during Covid there was a chip shortage. They gave a rebate for your truck if it didn’t have the chip to turn on cylinder deactivation. It was 50$ because at best you may see 1/2 a mile increase per gallon. Splitting hairs each fuel mileage trick wasn’t mandated. The government doesn’t do the engineering work and say use this until it’s already in use and they like it. The fuel mileage was mandated. And those add ons the results. There’s a mandate and they are the results.

      It was never mandated.  Ever.    Automakers were incentivized to install it by getting CAFE credits to help with their vehicle fleet fuel economy scores.  They were being handed money/CAFE credits to install it.  Which is NOT a mandate.       The current admin removed the incentives that were behind them installing it.

      My brand new 2007 Silverado's wax frame was rust from end to end partway through it's SECOND winter here in MA. That stuff is completely useless.
