What Kind of Lug Nut Socket

Recommended Posts

Helped my son rotate tires on his 2013 Silverado the other day. My impact socket wasn't deep enough to fit right. Got to looking at my 20" GMC wheels also. Need a socket with enough depth where the nut fits in so I don't damage the chrome cover on lug nuts. Looks like some deep sockets don't have enough depth where it fits onto lug nut. Any particular brand that works the best. What do you guys with the 20" chrome wheels use?

I have the All Terrain wheels. I've used both a Snap-On 7/8 deep impact socket and a Tekton 22 mm deep impact socket

I bought an S&K Metric Deep Impact socket set many years ago, and most of the sockets weren't broached all the way...I now have sets from Proto, Craftsman, Harbor Freight, & Sunex, which are.

Silverado lug nuts are 22mm, which is around 9 thousanths less than 7/8...

best way to not damage the lug nut is...don't use an impact gun...

Thanks guys. Yeah, I may stay away from my impact on the GMC. May just let the dealer keep doing. Going to have to get the relearn tool also if I want to do it myself. Looked at the wife's Cherokee. You don't have to do anything to the TPMS on it when you rotate tires. Years ago I would have never took it to a dealer for something that simple.

Very useful thread because I just bought new OEM18" takeoffs complete with OEM TPMS to swap my 20" OEM chromes. Thank you all for the advice. We have the deep sockets but the TPMS need to be flashed. Any tips on buying the relearn tool, let the dealer do it? I'll inquire on the cost at the dealer and decide what I want to do. I see some of the prices vary and I'll need to use the tool a few times again.

Get this one. I have it. Easy as pie and comes in handy if you rotate wheels regularly.

Went to check the torque on my wheels the other day - figuring when you buy new wheels they want you to check them after 50 miles - why not on a new truck. I do see where dual rear wheel torque should be checked every so often.

Anyway it was good to do - because I had no clue that the center caps only go on one way. The OEM lug nut tool did work OK for cap center cap removal. Is the anything better for center cap removal?

Crimany - Lug Nut Torque Spec is 140 ft lbs same a my 2500HD was!

Sort of related to this.. my truck has the GM lug nut locks, i recently purchased it and im not seeing the key for the lock anywhere. Is there a certain spot people place/hide them in?

You should just buy a cheap 1/2 drive ratchet, extention and deep socket to keep in the truck for emergencies. Those factory tire irons are lame at the best of times. Especially when you have lug nuts with the tin caps on them.

Watch out for dealers who rotate your tires, they done rubbed the chrome off of my lug nuts using socket that was not deep enough.

Sometimes the key comes in the your packet with all your owners manual and such or it could come like mine and come in a plastic packaging if you where to buy the set yourself. Location wise I'd check upper and lower glove boxes and or center console.

    • We have now!  2027 GMC Sierra  Early look, but I'm a GMC guy and so far I think I like the looks of the Chevy better.
    • HD at the moment, are kinda their own deal.  How LTZ sells on those vs on 1500, there is a difference.   They are merging most of the mid trims on 1500.  LT, RST and LTZ are replaced by one trim, Silverado.  LT and RST are a BIG portion of sales.    Bad naming choice aside, the new Silverado trim will offer the spread of options that those three trims offered.  So expect to see things like the tech package for example, and memory seats.  And LT Trail Boss will now just be "Trail Boss" (formerly LT Trail Boss) but will offer content spread like the new Silverado trim will.  The press photos showed the Trail Boss (formerly LT Trail Boss) has access to Super Cruise now, which on the current truck was High Country only.       Here is the Trail Boss interior.  Memory seats and Super Cruise are present.  All things the LT Trail Boss it replaces, and the RST it was based on didn't get on the current gen.  You had to go to LTZ or ZR2 for memory seats, and High Country for Super Cruise.
    • I installed a Hellwig rear sway bar on my 21 Sierra SLT, it made a huge difference on how the truck handles, no body roll, the trucks much more planted now. Not sure of the suspension differences between the 21 and 26,  if its body roll your having a sway bar will solve it.
    • So a follow up and my fix. I found in online searches the live data to look at on a scan tool to verify the fuel tank pressure sensor was working.  It showed an spec number towards the lower end of the rang, but in spec.  Then while it was running opened the gas cap and the pressure should change.  It didn't change even a tiny bit.  The data for the purge valve said it was open...never changed. So then I measured the voltages on the plug for the fuel pressure sensor and they matched what it should be.  So local car quest parts had the sensor in stock...it was a bit of a pain to remove and an even bigger one to get it to actually go back in.  It helped to unbolt the driveshaft and bungie cord away from the gas tank to give a bit more room to work. So fuel tank pressure sensor in I cleared the code, and started it up.  I went to the scan tool's live data and... Eureka! The pressure number was different and fluctuated a bit.  So took it on a short drive and pressure number varied saw the purge valve go from closed to open and back to closed.  Drove it to and from work for roughly a week plugged in the scan tool no codes.  I took it in to get tested and passed.  In my state's infinite wisdom (oops meant greed), since I pushed the test with the maximum extensions I have to take it back in by Feb '27 to 'get it back up to date', then my next test won't be until Feb '29.
