I hate mice

Had a deathly smell in my truck yesterday and found a dead baby mouse on top my cabin air filter. cleaned out a nest, put in a new filter and sprayed the hell out of the opening around the filter with febreze. Today the smell is back but not as bad. I'm going to check out the blower motor later and see what else I can find. Anyone have any experience with this problem? I picked up some ozium spray to give it a shot this time. Also....anyone have any luck with electronic pest devices?

For years I would place dryer sheets under the hood of my cars and trucks to prevent mice from making a nest. I even place them on top of the tires of my Vett and in the interior when I put her to bed for the winter... but my son in law used dryer sheets on his lawn mower and the dam mice made a nest out of them. Go figure...

Lol! Wasn't quite expecting that. Thanks for the laugh.

This is what I would try: Remove glove box and cabin filter, place a small electric fan as close as possible, turn it on and let it run all night and maybe give it an occasional quick shot of Lysol. I hope this helps.

I would spray some sort of disenfectant like lysol directly into the filter housing, febreeze isnt a disinfectant. If you have a shop vac, see if the crevice tool fits in the filter slot and let it run for a few minutes. Hopefully they didnt work there way up into the vents.

While this isn't about the Silverado/Sierra trucks I've owned, I can imagine the same engineer(s) designed the hvac system on my son's 2012 Cruze. Last spring he had a mouse invasion and they nested on top of his cabin air filter. After finding the dead baby mice and experiencing the lovely smell I undertook the home repair.

Here are a couple of shots of the area below the windshield with the cowl removed. Two huge fender drains on each side and a central drain (first pic where they entered) with a small rubber flapper cover. To be at it all the hvac air inlet (2nd pic) had no mesh or covering of any type. I covered the drains using 1/4" ratwire and silicone and used ratwire and self tapping screws to cover the hvac inlet. Sprayed lysol into the air inlet with the fan running wide open until it dripped from the vents.

We never did see any place where the critters chewed on anything in his car, but the wife's state issued car was parked next to it and they had lunch on her engine wiring. (Ford must make tastier wiring.)

Anyway I hope I never have occasion to have the cowl off my truck for rodents, but would be curious to see if the setup was similar.

What I have found to work over the years...

  • Dryer sheets work GREAT for keeping away spiders (ask anyone who docks their boat at a marina), but are just so-so on rodents.
  • For rodents I keep an old clock radio on 24/7 in my garage, playing a talk radio station. The sound of human voices tends to keep them away. I also keep a few moth balls around the man door and overhead doors. They can't stand the smell (and neither can most people!), just use them in moderation. These two methods have been great for keeping the rodents away from my MGB. It can be a real pain getting the balls off of a couple of moths though...

I've used dryers sheets in my boat and they didn't work either. They made a nest of them too. As previously stated, moth balls do work but most people can't stand them. Beats dead mouse or mouse turd smell though.

I've used cab fresh, dryer sheets and moth balls in and around my Camaro for a couple years with good results. I tore back into the truck and found more dead babies. I think they got scraped off the filter when I pulled it out. Had some on the trim piece below the blower motor and in the motor assembly itself. Cleaned up the mess and sprayed the ozium. So far so good
