Dash Camera Question

Was thinking about this more and more after reading a post earlier today on here: Who here has their dash camera hard wired into their truck? Mine is plugged into the cigarette lighter, which has been fine... It turns on and off with the truck. But my camera has the ability to sense motion/impact while the truck is off and record, plus I can connect with my phone and view it while I'm away from it, but it needs to be hardwired in.

 

Question is: If you have yours hardwired in, have you had any issues with battery drain or anything like that? Any downsides to doing this?

Mine will drain the battery to a no start condition in about 7 days. I have several trucks with cameras, all tied to the 12V outlet with a cigarette lighter type plug. I only plug in the camera to the truck I am going to drive for that week.

7 days isn't bad. Only time that would be an issue is if I am out of town. Otherwise I drive my truck every day. I actually think Blackvue sells an accessory to turn off the camera if the battery gets too low; I will look into that. Thanks for the info.

There's alot of hardwired cameras that have a low voltage shutoff. My street guardian cam is Hardwired and runs 24/7 but once the battery goes below 11.4 or something it'll shut off.

I have a dash cam that plugs into one of the USB charging ports. It has a shock sensor so it will turn on if anything happens. Other than that it only turns on when that USB port gets power which is more often than you think.

I've never considered getting this but have seen the videos that demonstrate the benefit. Where do you mount? Can you post a pic so I can see what this looks like?

That looks nice. Wired through headliner. That focal position gives you essentially the same view as a normal driver looking straight? How's it stick?

This is good information! I was planning on hard wiring a dash cam and a fan. I assumed the battery power protection feature of our trucks would prevent a potential loss of starting power. I understand now that this doesn't apply to aftermarket accessories! Accessories will need to have their own battery protection feature. Thanks again, GM-Trucks.com!

Yes wired through headliner and behind A pile on the drivers side. Stuck with supplied 3M tape on the GPS mount.

This is how i have mine set up as well. Except on the passenger side of the mirror. I have it going thru the headliner down the pillar (to the dash for the gps, no 3M just resting) then down the weather stripping, under & through the dash to the cig lighter outlet.

 

The camera itself is NOT mounted with 3M i didnt want that on my truck or windshield. They provided these clear sheets like phone screen protectors called static mounts and it just sticks to the windshield with no adhesive or residue. Has held up for a whole year thru 90°+ summers and sub zero winters.

Question can I utilize the existing factory camera that is mounted around the mirror as a dash cam? Is there a place to just plug in a DVR recorder or something? Seems kind of silly to add a dash cam if there is a camera already there?

Not unless you are a network/software engineer. Hardwired low speed network to BCM, IP, etc.

Where there's a will, there's a way I'm sure. And if anyones done it, they are probably on this forum
