30k Maintenance - Yes or No - Dealer pushing 'Severe' schedule

Hi fellas,

Took the truck in for an oil change today, 2015 Silverado. They were pushing for the 30k service that the manual lists as severe. I declined but they were really making me feel like I NEED it. I have 37k Miles.

My question to you guys is, do I? I plan on doing all the service under the 'Normal' schedule with my next oil change. Which is passenger compartment filter, engine air filter, evaporate control inspection and replace brake/clutch fluid.

My vehicle has 37k miles as mentioned before, and 75-80% of that is highway miles. What do you guys think? I don't think I fall under the severe maint. Schedule or even close.. but opinions from people who don't work for the dealer and aren't trying to upswell me is much more valuable than what the service advisors are pushing me for.

Definitely not. I would replace the air filter and cabin filter along with the brake fluid. The rest seems like a waste of money in my opinion.

Air Filter/Cabin Filter as for the Brake Fluid? In the last few years seems like that service has magically appeared in US vehicles? What is the color of the brake fluid? Still Clear and Full? Don't touch it.......

I had a dealer in Texas try the same thing. My answer was what the temp in here he said 74. I then ask what the temp outside he said 94. I said same with the engine and trans, there're climate controlled too via radiator and thermostat. Unless your pulling a load normal service is fine.

Thanks guys! I'm going to do the filters myself soon. When do you guys suggest doing the trans fluid? And should I do a flush or drain and fill?

Well I have been told I am complete idiot on this forum so here is my take.........Flush and fill using the Transmission pump remove and replace all fluid. I am just not a fan of the drop and fill method besides the mess I don't do it anymore. All or nothing!

Meh...my dealer still puts that little sticker in the corner of the window stating 3 mo/3K for the next oil change. The OM outlines what is severe use, if you fall in that category by all means change your fluids accordingly. I have followed the normal use schedule successfully for 56K miles without issue. I change the air ang canin filters every 2 years regardless. Ill probably do the diff and transfer case around 75K. Some will argue more, some less on fluid changes...do what you feel comfortable with or follow the OM....YMMV

you shouldn't need to mess with changing any fluids (except motor oil) until 75K.... unless you do some hard core towing.

Too many people are hyper sensitive about changing fluids all the time.... leave it alone.

I respectfully disagree. If you plan on keeping the truck past 150,000 miles then do the preventive maintenance now. Including a tranny flush. It's called preventative maintenance for a reason. I'd also go ahead and change the differential and transfer case fluids as well. The only thing i'd let go until 75,000 miles would probably be the coolant and maybe power steering fluid.. If you do the tranny fluid every 30,000 miles or so and don't do anything stupid with the tranny, you'll have a transmission that will last a long long time, vs the 100,000-150,000 miles that most people have crap out on them. While oils and fluids have come a VERY long way in development and performance, the fluid still gets contaminated and shavings and such from normal wear and tear break off as well. Keep the fluids clean and you'll have very happy components. Oh, and make friends with a good independent repair facility. No need to go to the stealership to have these services performed since they will not be covered under warranty.

150K? maybe 10% of owners keep their trucks that long. ....This isn't 1960... the majority of people today sell/trade within 4 years.

The dealers recommend what makes them money. Every time you go to the dealer for an oil change you give them the opportunity to find a service to sell you, that's why the give free oil changes. People think of the service advisor as a mechanic but basically they are salesmen. Many are even paid on commission. That means that the more work they convince you that your truck needs; the more money that it puts in their pockets.

Dang OP did you come into the the service bay squealing tires sliding sideways like ole Bo and Luke Duke or something? What gave them the idea that you needed the severe service interval?
